Ever Seen A Hotdog Eating Competition Up Close? [PICS]

We are inching closer to July 4th, and that brings one of America’s most cherished pastimes – the Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Con Leading up to each competition, George and Richard Shea host preliminary contests around America. Professionals and amateurs alike can enter the the prelim for a shot at taking on the current record holder, Joey Chestnut, who ate a full 68 hotdogs.

Cypress Street Pint & Plate in Atlanta, Georgia was the scene for one of the qualifiers on June 15th. George Shea was on hand to run the con Competitors had 10 minutes to eat as many Nathan’s Hotdogs as possible. Beer Street Journal got to judge the competition, and luckily didn’t get puked on. Cypress has a long list of Shmaltz/Coney Island beers on hand to wash down the very conservative amount of hotdogs everyone else ate. The winner (we lost  his name) polished off 38 freaking hotdogs. Ever seen one of these competitions up close? Take a look at the action, and the aftermath. Who looks like they will puke the most?  Watch the finals on July 4th on ESPN.

A Simple Video Guide to Meeting Women at the Bar

As you can imagine, I spend a lot of time in bars. I’ve heard some pretty bad pickup lines. (Really I should start writing them all down.) Have you had a couple of awkward moments recently? Perhaps some sage advice from a few bartenders will help you find love. Or at least like.

The Beer Glass That Keeps You Off Your Phone

I know I’m guilty of it. I bet your friends are too. Apart from confiscating your friends phones as they walk into the bar, the phone addiction may not be fixable. Until now. The Salve Jorge Bar in São Paulo, Brazil has created the Offline Glass to make beer drinkers focus on their friends and not their phones.

The glass is designed to be balanced on the phone. You have to have the phone on the table to put the glass down, otherwise the beer spills. See the video for a better understanding.

BrewDog Enters the Spirits Biz

We are going to have to sit down and think about all the breweries that are starting to distill their own spirits, alongside brewing beer. Scottish brewer BrewDog is the latest to do so, and this time the spirit is created from beer. Watt Dickie (named for the brewery founders), is a 35% ice distilled beer, that is in a category of it’s own.

The brewery calls Watt Dickie a “bastard love child of the process that goes into making Tactical Nuclear Penguin, Sink the Bizmarck, and The End of History all exceeding 30% ABV. To obtain such high levels, BrewDog freezes off excess water leaving the alcohol behind. The base beer is an “insanely amplified” IPA that undergoes a patent pending freezing alchemy to create the final product.

It is meant to be enjoyed as a spirit. Drink it on the rocks or neat, your choice.

Captain Picard’s First Pizza Slice Thanks to a Hangover

Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard!) has had an interesting first this year – a slice of pizza. Odd sounding right? He tweeted a week or so ago of him eating his first slice of pizza. That’s the first time in 72 years. Seem impossible? A little digging reveals what Sir Stewart said to New York Magazine about the ordeal.

“But nevertheless, this was my first slice of pizza, which I was only eating because my fiancée and I were a little hung-over yesterday morning and she said what we need is pizza and a soothing drink – and she was right. It solved the problem.

I have to say that I am beyond fascinated with what led to the hangover.

New BeerPouch Makes Growlers Passe

Have you ever seen a full growler fall to the ground and shatter into a million pieces with beer sadly covering the floor? Well, we have, and it’s not a pretty sight. Meet the BeerPouch. It’s like a giant Capri Sun for beers, in fact that’s what it was modeled after.

This bad boy looks like a child’s toy, but actually holds 64oz of beer just like a glass growler plus it holds carbonation, keeps sunlight out, and is easier to transport. Isn’t the future awesome? According to its creator Kevin Tubbs Altamont Beer Works in CA was the first to adopt the new technology inspired by a local 2-day music festival. Once they’re empty, just roll them up and put it in your backpack or pocket. For more information and to get your own check out BeerPouch’s website here.
