Victory Otto Arrives

Victory Otto Ale, a new bottled conditioned Belgian offering from the Downingtown, PA brewer has arrived.  The idea to brew this beer was born out of a trip to Bamberg, Germany that Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet took.  They combined a caramelly sweet dubbel with flavors of a smokey rauch beer and Otto was born.

The complimentary flavors of smoked malt and Belgian yeast seemed like an obvious combination,” said Bill. “As far as we know, no one has bothered to put them together until now.”

Label:
In 1987, when we arrived in Bamberg, Germany for the first time, St. Otto was not there to greet two thirsty travelers in a rented Fiat. He’d been dead for 848 years but we were alive, and our recent visit to the Belgian brewery of Orval only fanned the flames of our desire for fermented pleasures. The smoked malt (‘rauch’) beers of this lovely town where St. Otto was once Bishop were our siren song, luring us into deep, exotic flavors that we never before imagined in beer. Three decades later we wondered what smoked malt might add to a Belgian-style dubbel ale. Here is it, an Otto revival of sorts. We hope it helps rejuvenate some of our brain cells that were martyred in Bamberg so long ago. — The Brewmasters of Victory

Style: Belgian dubbel
Hops: German
Malts: Munich, Caramel
Yeast: Trappist

Taste Expectations: Sweet malt followed by a smokey flavor. Fruit Belgian yeast shines in the finish.  Caramel, raisins, dark fruits. Lots of flavors to sort out.

Availability: 750ml bottles, corked & caged.  1 time release. (For now)

Victory Listens, Brings Back Coffee Laden “Village”

Victory Brewing’s Village – an American Brown Ale with coffee, is returning for a second tap engagement.  The beer was invented over a beer in the Downingtown, PA taproom.

Village combines a brown ale, with the coffee from One Village Coffee in Soudertown, Pennsylvania.  From Victory:

A few weeks ago, when a brown ale we brewed especially to combine with the One Village Coffee was ready, Woody Decasere and Rob Altieri brought 66 pounds of ground Smart Blend coffee here to Victory. Then, along with Bill and Senior Brewer Adam Bartles, they scooped the ground coffee into bags that acted like giant filters and steeped the coffee in one of our tanks. The smell of freshly brewed coffee drifted down hallways and through the fermentation cellar, mingling with wisps of the aroma of roasted malt and fermenting beer. The scent alone made it clear that combining these two popular beverages was an excellent idea.

Style: Brown Ale (w/ coffee)
Availability:  Draft only.  Victory tap room, and accounts in PA

Victory’s Home Of Downingtown Under Water

While the Victory Brewery seems to be safe, residents of Downingtown, Pennsylvania are soaked from the same water that makes the beer.  Another brewing town in a string of brewing towns dealing with crazy weather. (RE: Vermont, New York, Philly).  Hershey Park in Hershey, PA suffered from flash flooding yesterday and 2 buffalo in the park died.  Troegs Brewing is putting the finishing touches on their new brewery at Hershey, no word if water was an issue there.

The borough of Downingtown was essentially “split in half” by flooding last night, she said. Downingtown Police Lt. Howard Holland said police were just starting to relax as the tributaries of the Brandywine Creek that snake through the borough were visibly receding and the rains had subsided. Then, with no warning, the Brandywine burst over its banks about 5:30 p.m., engulfing Route 30 and Pennsylvania Avenue and making it impossible to travel from one end of the borough to the other…

Victory To Offer Behind The Scenes Look At Headwaters

Victory Brewing (Downingtown, PA) will be giving beer lovers an inside look at the brewing, Headwater’s Pale Ale, and it’s challenges.

Starting tomorrow September 7th, Victory will will give readers a day to day update on the ups and downs of the second release of this instant hit.

From Victory:

In the interest of consumer transparency, Victory Brewing Company recently blogged about the challenges they face when predicting growth and contracting hops. The newly released and overwhelmingly popular Headwaters Pale Ale is a perfect example of how brewery supply isn’t always able to keep up with consumer demand. The beer, released for the first time in 2011, was so well-received that Victory’s supply of the centerpiece Citra hops got dangerously low. Unwilling to compromise on the recipe, Victory had to slow production of the brand – until now.

On Sept. 7, when the behind-the-scenes blog series launches, readers will be able to follow along as Victory travels to Washington state, selects and contracts the hops, then returns to brew and package the beer and much more.

Headwaters hits the shelves again in October, 2011.  Follow the story at www.victorybeer.com/blog.
