CASK ALERT: Terrapin Pumpkinfest

Tapping Friday , October 1st is Terrapin’s newest seasonal – Pumpkinfest.

Quick Description:
Brewed with a mix of Vienna and Munich malts, and Vanguard and Hallertau hops. Spike Buckhowski (Head Brewer/ Co-founder) chose these particular hops, because they have a more bitter character and less aroma. In addition to these malts/hops, Spike whipped up a whirlpool of spices, including ginger, allspice, and ground clove. (Starting to sound like pumpkin pie?) The spices are heated, but not boiled. Boiling the spices raises the potential for unwanted flavors to enter into the brew. The coup de grace of this fest ale is the 1 lb of pumpkin used per barrel.

Terrapin’s Hop Harvest This Saturday!

This Saturday, Terrapin Brewing in Athens, Georgia hosts they’re first “Hop Harvest”!  From Terrapin-

Terrapin Beer Co is hosting a celebration of “everything hoppy” with their 1st annual “Hop Harvest Festival” this weekend Saturday September 25th   from 4:30 — 7:30pm.

The featured beer of the night will be the first ever pouring of Terrapin’s new fresh hop (or “wet —hop”) limited-release beer “So Fresh & So Green Green”. This very special beer is brewed with Amarillo hops cones flown in overnight from the Yakima Valley in Washington earlier this month. Brian “Spike” Buckowski, co — founder & brew master at the brewery, plans to make this beer annually so Saturday will be the beginning of a Terrapin tradition!

Terrapin will also serve 6 casks of ale each dry hopped with a different variety of hops. These casks will offer people a unique tasting opportunity to identify the distinguishing characteristics of different hop varietals. These unique casks will be tapped at 5:30.

Other plans for the festivities include!

  • Special guests John Isenhour from Hop Union and Patrick LaZell from Country Malt Group/Canada Malting Company to explain the unique role hops play in the brewing process and to educate visitors about the history and biology of these bittering beauties.
  • Farm 255 will have their mobile Farm Cart on hand with locally grown farm to table goodies for sale.
  • Live music by the Welfare Liners local Athens Bluegrass favorites.
  • Hopzilla, Big Hoppy Monster, Hopsecutioner, Hop Karma and more of your favorite hoppy beers from Terrapin!

Terrapin Pumpkinfest Arrives!

The newest Terrapin seasonal has arrived!  Pumpkinfest debuted last year as a part of Terrapin’s Side Project bomber series.  In it’s sophomore release — this pumpkin beer gets promoted to seasonal.

If you don’t know Terrapin’s head brewer Spike Buckowski, Spike favors German brewing styles and ingredients.  In the recent collaboration “Monstre Rouge” brewed with Belgian brewery De Proef you’ll find extra rye malt.  Rye malt is a favored ingredient in German style Roggenbier.  Pumpkinfest is a hybrid brew of a German oktoberfest style lager, and pumpkin ale.

Food Pairings: Jerk Chicken & Sweet potato fries.  Thanksgiving dinner, aged gouda & jalapeno jack cheeses.

Availability: 12oz/6pks, Draft. Seasonal, following Sunray each year.

Cypress Street Beer Geek Tuesday 9/7

It’s Beer Geek Tuesday at Cypress Street.  In addition to new beers for the occasion, a spiffy new logo is paired with them.   Now that Labor Day has come and gone, people are starting to take fall seriously.   What are the first beers I think of ?  Oktoberfests/Marzens.   Cypress Street agrees.

Today begins an oktoberfest celebration on Tuesdays.  A new oktoberfest beer (or 2) will hit tap handles each Tuesday during September.  I’m sure there will be some surprises along the way.  In addition to these fall lagers and ales, the chefs at Cypress Street will be pairing traditional German food.  Just another way to beer geek out.  The beers today:

Terrapin Pumpkinfest – Pumpkin Ale, 6.1% ABV.   Brewed like  an oktoberfest with pureed pumpkin added in the finish.  It’s malty and pumpkin-y at the same time.

Left Hand — Oktoberfest. 6% ABV. Toffee, sweet malt. Hints of coffee and roasted malt.  Longmont, CO

Also – the latest in Left Hand/Terrapin’s Midnight Collaboration – Oxymoron will be sold by the glass.  Read about Oxymoron HERE!
