Update on SweetWater’s Canning Aspirations

A whopping 516 days ago, Beer Street Journal mentioned that SweetWater Brewing Company (Atlanta, GA) was factoring in a canning line in the new expansion on Ottley Drive. At the time, it was brewery founder Freddy Bensch’s plan to have a canning line in place sometime in 2012.

If you have spent any amount of time around a craft brewery, you’ll know not everything goes to plan. Over the weekend at SweetWater’s 42o Fest in Atlanta, Freddy held court with fest’s beer drinking attendees. The people have spoken. They want cans. In the the brewery’s packaging footprint does have an area earmarked for a canning line, but one is NOT on order. Or even really been spec’d out.

Cans are indeed very seriously on the radar for SweetWater. As Freddy Bensch said this weekend – when they do can, he’s thinking of bringing back Hummer, the brewery’s retired witbier.

Don’t even start thinking about cans from Atlanta’s biggest craft brewery until sometime in 2014.

Rare Beers SweetWater’s Experience [VIDEO]

SweetWater Brewing Company is currently hosting the 9th edition of their 420 Fest. The music and beer festival spans three days, and is about as much fun as you can have (for free!) in a park in the Spring. New this year is the SweetWater Experience, a behind the scenes look at the brewery from grain to glass.

Head brewer Nick Nock got the chance to really experiment and play around with this lineup for the this event. The tent features 24 different beers, mostly one-offs. The most SweetWater has ever had in one place in their 16 year history.

SweetWater Brewing Finishes Expansion [VIDEO]

After nearly two years SweetWater Brewing Company is putting the last touches on their newly expanded brewhouse with a system that can now manage more than 250 barrel batches, quadruple their previous brewing capacity. With this SweetWater will be able to expand their distribution footprint to include more of Southern Florida, NC, SC, KY, VA, and LA.

In the 16 years we’ve been brewing beer, we’ve never been able to keep up with the demand. This new brewhouse will allow us to brew larger amounts of beer at a single time. Most importantly, it will allow us to slow down those processes and improve the quality of our beer, and the quality of life for people behind it…two things we are most dedicated to.” Freddy Bensch founder and Big Kahuna of SweetWater Brewing Company.

Soon you’ll get Some Strange, a black IPA. Having had a taste off the tanks this week, know this – you are in for a treat. Imagine SweetWater IPA (bright and citrusy) with a dark/coffee complexity. Yeah- I thought you’d like that.
