SEASONAL RETURN: Redhook Late Harvest

Redhook Brewing (Portsmouth, NH) debuted a great pilsner (Ropeswing) this summer.  That might be why their fall seasonal isn’t a lager, but a red ale.  It changes things up a bit.  The label for Late Harvest got a little update in 2008 and has been the same since.

Commerical Description:
As the fall days grow shorter, beer drinkers naturally start their migration toward more robust, full-bodied brews. Late Harvest is an easy-drinking, yet flavorful brew that features a deep chestnut color and unique, roasted malt aroma and flavor. Late Harvest’s rich flavor is the result of using four different malts, yet the robust profile remains balanced and sophisticated, thanks to our two distinctive hop additions.

Beer Rundown:
Style: American Amber/Red Ale
Hops: Willamette, Saaz, Chinook
Malts:  Pale, C60, C70/80, C Vienne, Smoke

Taste Expectations: Toasty malts.  Sweet caramel malts.  Light fruit flavors. Grassy/earthy hops.  Another good fall offering.

Availability: 12oz/6 pks. Draft.  September-November seasonally.

5.8% ABV
30 IBU’s

NEW RELEASE: Redhook Rope Swing Pils

Redhook Brewing from Portland, NH has added a new summer seasonal for your drinking pleasure.   It’s a pilsner, which should should meld well with warmer weather.  The name just sounds like summer doesn’t it?

One great thing to note right off the bat about Redhook’s Rope Swing pilsner is that there aren’t all too many CRAFT BREWED pilsners available about there.  Shiner just made a splash with Shiner 101.

As described by Redhook –

“Rope Swing Summer Pilsner is brewed in a traditional Czech style and is the first pilsner Redhook Ale Brewery has ever released.  Rope Swing Summer Pilsner offers a very soft palate and malt flavors that are offset by a medium dose of destinct Czech hops to bring out its authentic flavors.  The refreshing beer finishes with a clean, bright, thirst-quenching quality.”

New Release – Redhook 8-4-1 Expedition

Hitting Atlanta shelves today is the newest small batch release by Redhook  Brewing (Woodlinville, WA.) 8-4-1 is an American Strong Ale with a unique bio that explains it’s name. It was developed by 8 Redhook brewers split up into 4 teams of 2 people.  (Be patient, I know it says 8-4-1.)  Each team created 1 beer, close the the target style.  In the end, each teams brew was blended together to make this strong ale.  Many people are starting to refer to it as a bit of an imperial brown ale.

Per Greg Deuhs, Redhook Brewmaster

8-4-1 Expedition Ale is a great beer. Its combination of brown sugar and honey, paired with a variety of rich specialty and smoked malts before being aged for months with oak chips, give it a depth worth sipping next to the fire. Inspired by eight brewers working in four teams, 8-4-1 offers complex nuances to the traditional American-Style Strong Brown Ale that I am confident beer connoisseurs will appreciate.

Ingredients –

Hops – Unspecified as of yet – Expedition IS dry hopped

Malts – Pale, Smoked Specialty, Black, Caramel

Tasting Notes – There is a lot going on with this brew.  Honey. Smoke. Brown sugar is prevalent.  Oaky, sweet notes, and malty there is a complexity you will be spending time sorting out.  Perhaps some cherry.  Subtle sour.

Availability – 22oz bomber bottles, one time limited release.  Very limited draft offerings.

9.5% ABV

55 IBU’s (slight bitter)

More to follow on this one….

New Release – Redhook Treblehook

Lately I have been noticing that alongside the normal run of beers, and seasonal releases by various breweries, many are doing a limited beer release.   Whether an experiment or a small batch, these beers are popping up everywhere.  Redhook Brewery, out of Portsmouth New Hampshire just added another limited release.

Redhook’s most recent limited release is  Barleywine and is the second edition in the limited series.   This barleywine is brewed with aromatic malts such as Pale, Caramel, Flaked Barley, Black, and Melenodin.  There is also a special extra aromatic malt concoction that is used.   Hops used are Cascade, Palisades, Chinook, and Simcoe.

This barleywine was first brewed in 2007.  In 2008 it won Gold in the 2008 Great American Beer Festival, and took Silver in 2009.  Want to hold on to it a while?  Recommended cellaring for Treblehook by Redhook is about 3 years.  Treblehook is 10.1% ABV.

Quoting Red Hook —

Boasting big aromatic malts, Redhook Treblehook pours a dark gold with a velvety mouthfeel and a slightly bitter finish. Brewed in the style of a traditional American barley wine with a 10.1% ABV and 57 IBUs, Treblehook sets itself apart by playing up the hops to add depth and complexity. Dry-hopped vigorously throughout the six-month process, Treblehook’s strength comes from its ability to have a strong hop flavor while still allowing the malt characteristics to shine through.

Available at Hop City, Tower, Greens, and Total Wine.  22 oz bottle, around $10.00
