New Belgium Announces New Sour, Collaboration

New Belgium officially announced the next two beers in their Lips Of Faith Series: Tart Lychee and The Lost Abbey Collaboration.

Tart Lychee – Brewed with lychee fruit, and blended into a barrel aged sour beer.   It’s brewed with pale malt, caramel-80, carapils, malted wheat and oats, then spiced with lychee fruit and a touch of cinnamon. The hazy orange Tart Lychee begins with bold, tropical aromas and ends with a sharp, dry finish. 7.5% ABV

The Lost Abbey Collaboration Brett Beer – The two breweries love of brettanomyces (wild, funky yeast) unites the 2 in this beer.  Tomme Arthur flew out to Ft Collins, Colorado to brew with New Belgium’s Peter Bouckaert.  In turn, Peter flew out to Lost Abbey’s San Marcos, California home.  Target, Centennial, & Sorachi Ace hops combined with the brett yeast give the beer a citrus & pineapple flavor with a funky/sour edge.  7.5% ABV

New Belgium Announces Tart Lychee & Lost Abbey Collaboration (PR)

“TART LYCHEE” AND “THE LOST ABBEY COLLABORATION” SELECTED FOR NEW BELGIUM’S LIPS OF FAITH SERIES

Second Round of 2012 Lips of Faith Beers Tribute Belgian Sours and the Brewery’s Newest Collaboration

Ft. Collins, CO, April 23, 2012 — New Belgium Brewing (www.newbelgium.com) today announced the second two beers in its 2012 Lips of Faith series: Tart Lychee and The Lost Abbey Collaboration Brett Beer. Lips of Faith beers offer limited edition selections that showcase New Belgium’s more esoteric and palate-elevating creations.

New Belgium’s sweet and sour Tart Lychee highlights the unique lychee fruit, which is balanced alongside a wood-aged sour beer. It’s brewed with pale malt, caramel-80, carapils, malted wheat and oats, then spiced with lychee fruit and a touch of cinnamon. The hazy orange Tart Lychee begins with bold, tropical aromas and ends with a sharp, dry finish. Tart Lychee is available on draft and in 22-ounce bombers. Alcohol by volume is 7.5 percent.

New Belgium Brewing and The Lost Abbey brewery from San Marcos, California have a shared passion for a variety of things, not the least of which is the wild Belgian yeast brettanomyces. So they decided to join forces and collaborate. Lost Abbey Collaboration is brewed simply with pale malts accompanied by Target, Centennial and Sorachi hops for a hint of citrus. Focusing on their mutual respect for the ingredient, the spotlight shines on the brettanomyces, where a full brett fermentation offers bold pineapple overtones and funky, sour edge. The beer is a shining, golden shade and is warming and dry. Lost Abbey Collaboration is available on draft and in 22-ounce bombers. Alcohol by volume is 7.5 percent.

“This round of Lips of Faith selections are a test of balance,” said New Belgium brewer Grady Hull.  “Tart Lychee shows the interconnectedness of sweet and sour and the Lost Abbey Collaboration balances the nuances of two breweries to create something that together we can call uniquely ours.”

Tart Lychee is available now and The Lost Abbey Collaboration Brett Beer will be available mid-May in select markets while supplies last.  Pricing varies by market.

Work Labs Still Pissed At New Belgium

Work Labs is a graphic design agency in Richmond, Virginia.  They are none to happy with New Belgium.  The agency is pretty miffed about similarities to artwork they did for a brand called “Work Beer” a few years ago.  The agency designed the campaign for [unnamed] Colorado brewery, which loved the ads, but didn’t launch the beer.  Work Labs has called out the brewery on their blog, and their apparent theft of the art.  On Twitter, they have tried reaching out to Mashable, and the Huffington Post.

The connection?  Work Labs is stating that the work they did for “Work Beer” was past to the ad agency in Colorado that happens to be the same agency for New Belgium.

Interesting:  At no point does it mention Work Labs contacting the brewery, attorney, or the PR agency in Colorado.

Editor’s Commentary:   I recently contacted Work Labs and they did not respond.  I would think if you have strong case of intellectual theft, don’t go complaining on your blog.  Grow a set and contact the supposed thief, or call a lawyer.  At least the offender first. To Work Lab’s credit?  The work is impressive and was way ahead of it’s time.  Is it the brewery’s fault?  Or did the PR agency put New Belgium in a precarious situation?

Below, you’ll see some interesting parallels to the artwork for Work Beer, and New Belgium.  There are more on their website.  (Link above.)  They even want you to vote on how they should feel.

G-Love To Collaborate With New Belgium

Philadelphia musician Garrett Dutton, better known as G-Love of G-Love and Special Sauce, has befriended New Belgium and will be brewing a beer with them this summer.  Tentatively they will be brewing a peach beer together this July for the Lips of Faith series.  It will potentially be named Front Porch Peach Lounger after G-Love’s song, Front Porch Lounger.  The beer will be brewed with NJ peaches, molasses, grits, and biscuit malt.  It will be bottled in 22oz bottles and will be 9.4% ABV.

Dutton has been a homebrewer since he was in 11th grade.  Yep, he was a young’n.  He brewed his first batch of beer for a school science project.  He says that they always try local craft beers when they are on the road and has been wanting to find someone to collaborate with for some time.  He is also a big New Belgium fan.  He even has a Fat Tire cruiser that he rides to the beach to surf.

New Belgium Brewing Announces Asheville as Site for Second Brewery

Brewer will expand production capacity with east coast facility

Fort Collins, CO, April 5, 2012 – New Belgium Brewing announced today that Asheville, NC has been selected as the new location for a second brewery. The 400,000-barrel brewery and packaging facility will provide New Belgium with additional capacity allowing the Colorado-based brewer to expand into new areas of distribution. Upon completion in 2015, the facility will initially create 50 new jobs in the Asheville area with more than 100 positions expected at full buildout.

The 17.5-acre site located in the heart of the River Arts District will accommodate the 150,000 sq. ft. facility. The brewery will feature a 200-barrel brewing system, a tasting facility, and a process wastewater treatment center on-site. Tours will be available to the public. Total cost projections are over $100 million.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2013 with beer rolling off the line in early 2015. A full Asheville-specific press kit, a video statement from Kim Jordan and downloadable b-roll are available athttp://www.newbelgium.com/files/presskit.
