New in Bottle – Founder’s Old Curmugeon

Arriving alongside Nemesis this week is Old Curmudgeon Ale both from Founder’s Brewing, Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Old Curmudgeon is an old ale (simply meaning aged, usually in oak.)

Curmudgeon is brewed with molasses with a huge focus on malts.  Then it is aged in oak barrels.   The end result is a malty but sweet strong ale.  You will note caramel malts, raisin tones in the nose and palette, subtle hints of a vanilla, with some noticeable alcohol.  Its very drinkable, you can easily forget it’s almost 10%.  If you enjoyed Dirty Bastard (malty scotch ale) or Backwoods Bastard (scotch ale in bourbon) Then don’t pass this up.

Available seasonally in small batches.  It shipped with Nemesis. Should starting popping up today.  Sightings to come.  Follow @AtlBeerMaster on Twitter.

Founder’s Nemesis CONFIRMED!

Founder’s Brewing has been a VERY popular addition to the Atlanta beer scene in 2010.   Some of the limited offerings came and went in a matter of hours – namely Backwood’s Bastard.  Well, if you missed that rarity there is yet another for you to jockey for – Founder’s Nemesis.  Started arriving in Atlanta today!

If you take a look at Founder’s website it is nothing short of ambiguous about what Nemesis actually is.  From their description –

“What you have here is a rarity. A special, one-of-a-kind ale that is only made once a year. Sometimes that’s all. Forever. No more. Nada. Limited-time only. You never know what you’re gonna get. But you can be sure that it’ll be damn tasty.”

2009 marks the first release of Nemesis.  It will be brewed in VERY limited batches and sold in bottles.  This year’s run will apparently be a Maple Bourbon Barrel Aged Wheat Wine.   The oak barrels were used to aged Michigan maple syrup at one point, as they were also used to age bourbon.   Estimated ABV 12+% ABV.

Official Description –

“The 2009 release of Nemesis is best described as a Maple Bourbon barrel aged wheat wine holding 12.5% abv and 70 ibu’s. The barrels have been resting deep in the mines of Grand Rapids for nearly 9 months which have been most effective in developing a great product. The Bourbon barrels we used in this creation were once used to age Maple syrup from northern Michigan, then emptied, and procured for our use in aging this beer. The combination of American oak, Kentucky Bourbon, Michigan Maple syrup and our golden/tan wheat ale has provided a delicious malty sweet ale distinctive of strong vanilla and bourbon notes.”

Sightings – The Porter Beer Bar (via @curtdawsey)  9 pm 2/16. (SOLD OUT)

Tower ATL ( Buckhead) – Had a few earlier today. 2/17  Must ask employee for bottles.

New in Bottle – Founder’s Brewing Double Trouble

Double Trouble! The next edition to Atlanta by Founder’s Brewing.  Double Trouble is an Imperial IPA with a complex hop character.

Double Trouble is strong on hops, with hints of grapefruit and pine. There is some notable alcohol tone in DT.  Add in a nice malt backbone with a sweet finish — you have a great DIPA.

Since Atlanta is just now coming off the Hopslam high, don’t crash yet.  Double Trouble shares some commonality with Hopslam.   I found it a toss up which I enjoyed more…

Double Trouble is a seasonal release by Founder’s Brewing, Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Availability — 12 oz 4 packs and limited draft offerings.

9.4% ABV

2/18 – Now Tapping @ Midway Pub, East Atlanta

Now Tapping – Founder’s Brewing’s Backwoods Bastard @ Brickstore Pub

Founder’s officially arrived in Georgia yesterday and if that wasn’t enough to look forward to, now you have the first wave of taps.  Much to my excitement the first I have found is Backwoods Bastard!

If you are a fan of bourbon oak aged beers, look no further.   Especially if you enjoyed Red Brick 15 or if you were lucky, Brooklyn Black Ops.  Backwoods is a Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy much like their year round beer Dirty Bastard.  However, this scotch ale spent time in bourbon oak, changing it’s character for the better.

Vanilla is my favorite flavor added to bourbon aged beers – and you will find it in abundance here.  Be on the look out for bourbon, oak, and dark cherry flavors in this one.  Caramel malts from the scotch ale round this one out.  It’s a little boozy, some might find this one a sipper, but let me tell you – it’s fantastic.

Backwoods Bastard is a limted seasonal release by Founder’s Brewing.  Apart from draft offerings, it’s sells in 12 oz. 4-packs – $12-$14 available now.

10.2% ABV

Ok.  Now you have that out of the way,  here are beers in Founder’s launch lineup —

Dirty Bastard –  Scotch Ale, 8.5% ABV.  Brewed with 7 varieties of malts.  Hints of smoke, and peat.  Finishes with a strong hit of hops in the finish.

Centennial IPA — IPA, 7.2% ABV.  Floral and Citrusy.  This IPA has been dry hopped, and has a noticeable malt backbone.

Red’s Rye P.A. –  Rye Beer, 6.8% ABV.  Grapefruit tones, with slight bitter hop finish.  Dry hopped with Amarillo.  Enriched with 4 types of Belgian caramel malts and 1 type of rye malt.   Great spicy finish.

Pale Ale — Pale Ale, 5.4% ABV.  Founder’s describes this as “A tribute to Cascade hops in a bottle.”  Floral and citrus flavors with a balanced sweet malt finish.

UPDATE! – Breakfast Stout – Stout, 8.3% ABV.  Coffee laden stout.  Flaked oats, bitter & imported chocolates.  Sumatra and Kona Coffee.   Hints of cinnamon, especially in the head.

Also, as a VERY limited offering in the “Seasonal” category  –

Backwoods Bastard — Scotch Ale, 10.2% ABV.   Backwards Bastard is essentially the Dirty Bastard that has been aged in oak bourbon barrels.   Aromas of single malt scotch, smoke, sweet caramel, and roasted malts.  Love that vanilla flavor you get from bourbon aged beers?  You’ll find it here.  Tiny hints of dark cherries.

Coming Soon – Double Trouble – Imperial IPA.  Pungent aroma hops. Bittering hops for the finish.  Nice malt balance.  9.4% ABV.
