5 Breweries, Lots of Ingredients. A Superstar Collaboration

Long time friends and brewers Allagash Brewing , Avery Brewing , Dogfish Head, The Lost Abbey, and Sierra Nevada Brewing got together to brew a special collaboration beer and each selected a native terrior to contribute to the brew.

Repoterrior by definition is Noun 1.) A stock of ingredients, techniques, or pieces that a company or group of performers combines and is prepared to perform.  2.) The repossession or reclamation of the ideal of terrior from the wine world (where it means dirt) to the craft brewing world (where it means the creative thumbprint of the artisanal brewer).

So what did each brewery contribute to this 5.5% ABV session-lager?

  • Sierra Nevada — Wild Rice, Beets, Cucumber, Mint, Carrots
  • Avery — Colorado Alfalfa Honey
  • Allagash — Maine Purple Potatoes
  • Dogfish Head — Free-range Atlantic Ocean Beach Wood
  • Lost Abbey — Cage Free Pacific Ocean Beach Wood

Like many other great collaborations, the idea for this beer was born from conversation in a back room of a Boulder, CO restaurant.  Brewed at Sierra Nevada in Chico, CA this sessionable lager beer reclaims the earthbound mantle of terroir from the grape-soaked, buttoned-down world of wine and repurposes it in a new sudsy sense.  Featuring natural ingredients contributed by each of the five breweries, this unique and earthy beer is complex and layered but ultimately drinkable. Using the full repertoire of skills from more than 86 combined years of brewing knowledge and skill, this lager combines traditional (and not so traditional) ingredients into an ideal summertime brew.

This will be an extremely limited draft only offering available at the collaborating breweries.

Gluten Free? Dogfish Has Beer For That This December

Can’t process Gluten? Then a lot of beers will end up making you feel worse than better.  There are a few gluten free beers out there, but the taste is hit or miss.

Dogfish Head feels your pain. If you recall Tweason’Ale brew day in animated GIFs; that is the beer is destined for shelves.   Drinkers at the Dogfish brewpub have asked about a gluten free offering for years.

“It seems as if lots of folks who have gluten-tolerance issues are pining for an interesting beer,” says Dogfish founder and president Sam Calagione. “While there are a few well-made examples that mirror traditional beer styles, there aren’t any off-centered offerings.”

Presenting an off centered beer free of evil glutenTweason’ale.

…we replaced the classic barley foundation of beer with a mild, high-maltose sorghum base. The hints of molasses and pit-fruit are balanced by vibrant strawberry notes and a unique complexity that comes with the addition of a malty buckwheat honey. We believe health-conscious beer drinkers and the millions of Americans who suffer from Celiac disease can cut back on gluten while relishing the distinction and drinkability of this very special brew.

Tweason’Ale will be the first brand new 4 pack offering in over 5 years by DFH.  It will go into the brewery’s national distribution network.

Style: Fruit Beer (Gluten Free)
Availability: 12oz/4pks, Draft.  Will make a GABF 2011 appearance

6% ABV

PICS: Repoterrior Brewday

Avery, Allagash, Dogfish Head, Lost Abbey, and Sierra Nevada have gotten together to make a super collaboration of sorts.  The beer, Repoterroir features ingredients from each of the brewers home towns.   Below is Sierra Nevada’s description of Repoterrior and pics from research & brew day.

A distinct 5.5% ABV session-lager brewed with elemental, native terroir from the following collective of brewers: Sierra Nevada (wild rice, beets, cucumber, mint and carrots), Avery (Colorado alfalfa honey), Allagash (Maine purple potatoes), Dogfish Head (free-range Atlantic Ocean “beach” wood), and Lost Abbey (cage-free Pacific Ocean “beach” wood).

Born out of a backroom conversation in a Boulder restaurant and blooming into a full-blown cornucopia of a collaboration, Repoterroir is a coming together of like-minded craft beer compatriots. Brewed at Sierra Nevada’s brewery in Chico, CA this sessionable lager beer reclaims the earthbound mantle of terroir from the grape-soaked, buttoned-down world of wine and re-purposes it in a new sudsy sense.

Featuring natural ingredients contributed by each of the five breweries, this unique and earthy beer is complex and layered but ultimately drinkable. Dogfish Head Land Purchase Annoys Locals

Dogfish Head recently purchased 4 parcels of land in “Cannery Village” the land development adjacent to the brewery in Milton, Delaware.  DFH is asking for the land to be zoned to light industrial.  So what’s the big deal?

The land purchase, spanning 43.5 acres, is about 1/3 of Cannery Village.  If zoned to industrial and used by Dogfish, it would result in the loss of 170 homebuilds. Ok?

Fewer homes means less money that would go to the homeowner’s association, that would maintain the on site recreation center.  Yearly upkeep is close to $80,000.  The homes that do remain would be forced to pay a larger share of the $80K.

The only thing Dogfish has planned for the site is a warehouse for storage, covering just 1/2 an acre.  [DelmarvaNow]
