Terrapin’s Edition of BFM Collaboration Arrives

This one has been a while in the making. Well over a year ago, Terrapin Beer Co and Brasserie Franches Montagnes (Jura, Switzerland) collaborated on a rye based barleywine. The first edition “Spike & Jerome’s Ale” was aged in rum barrels in Switzerland.

Terrapin has been aging their edition Jerome & Spikes 2011 Barley Ryne in bourbon barrels in Athens, Georgia. Well, at least 1/3 of it. The beer is a blend of barrel aged and non barrel aged beer.

Style: Barleywine (Partially Barrel Aged)
Availability: 22oz bombers

Schneider & BFM’s Wine Barrel Creation Headed Stateside

 B. United will be importing a new one from Schneider & Sons.  Cuvee Barrique is a collaboration between Brasserie Franches-Montagnes’s Jerome Rebetez in Switzerland and Hans-Peter Drexler. Schneider took their wheat doppelbock (Aventinus?) and aged in one of Jerome’s wine barrels. Start salivating.

Style: Wheat Doppelbock (Barrel Aged, Wine Aged)

Jerome & Spikes 2011 Barley Ryne (US Edition)

Terrapin BFM Spike & JeromeMeet the American edition of Spike & Jerome’s Barley Ryne.  As you may remember, last year Terrapin collaborated with Brasserie BFM in Switzerland.  The result was a sour/tart rye based barleywine aged in rum barrels and imported to the U.S. by BFM.

Above is the U.S. label, for a version of the barley wine that is a blend of 2/3 ale and 1/3 ale that has been aging in bourbon barrels at the Terrapin brewery in Athens, Georgia.  Note the name transposition to Jerome & Spikes.  Terrapin  is currently deciding when this version will be released.

Spike & Jerome Bottles Finally Surface

These bottles were expected back in July – finally making their shelves now.  Back in February, Terrapin travelled to Jura, Switzerland and collaborated with Brasserie Franches Montagnes.  (Actually, they were already on a European beer tour.)  In the cold of winter, the two breweries created a rye based barleywine.

The barleywine — “Spike & Jerome’s Ale” is actually derived from 20% rye, 80% malted barley.   The beer has been aging in rum barrels in Switzerland.

Style: Barleywine (Barrel aged)
Taste Expectations: Lots to discuss here. Rum. Sour oak. Dark fruit. Raisins. Figs. Lemons. Acidic notes, vanilla. Like I said. Lots.
Availability: Limited draft. 11.4 oz bottles.  One time brew.

Sour Fans, A New Vintage Of BFM Bon Chien

The 2010 vintage of Brasserie Franches-Montagnes L’Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien is now available.  (Previously 2007-2009).  You love sour, oaky, beers look no further.  Bon-Chien is named for the brewery’s cat, that passed away in 2005.  The 2010 vintage was blended this year, from previous vintages.

L’Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien, Strong sour ale, 11% vol. is a real UFO, it is a beer brewed in honor of the former brewery cat, sanctified in her disappearance. This wine with hints of amber-red is matured for months in oak barrels that once contained wine or distilled spirits. The drums give flavor to this very complex beer.On the palate, it recalls the plot of a fruity red wine with a marked acidity.

Style:  Biere De Garde
Taste Expectations:  Sour, Funk. Oak, cherries, grapes.  Tart & puckering finish.  Slightly boozy.
Availability: 750 bottles.
