The Most Interesting DUI: A Man, A Zebra, & A Parrot [Video]

A man was arrested outside of a bar in Dubuque, Iowa on Sunday for DUI.  The 55 year old man was boasting 2x the legal limit of .08.  But wait, there’s more.  The man – Jerald Reiter had friends with him.  A zebra, and a parrot.  People outside of the bar were taking pictures of the intoxicated mini zookeeper, and it is assumed that one of them called the police.

Police arrived just as Reiter was driving away, with the baby zebra and parrot at his side.  You’ll see the video below that Reiter and his girlfriend treat the exotic animals like children.  Car rides, and trips the park, etc.  The best part? The name of the bar – The Doghouse Lounge.  I guess sometimes when you hear hoofbeats (especially in a bar), it’s ok to think zebras.  Not horses.

Woah. Look at this guy.

You can make this stuff up.

Scotland Celebrates America with Innis & Gunn Independence Day

Innis & Gunn will be shipping a new offering to the United States in June.  Independence Day,  commemorates the history of the United States and Scotland have together.  Innis & Gunn states that “21 of the 56 men signing the Declaration of Independence had Scottish blood.  Two were actually born in Scotland.”  America’s “Uncle Sam” has parents from Scotland.  Innis & Gunn states that 30 million American citizens trace their decent from Scotland, despite the population of Scotland topping out at a mere 5 million people.

Short’s Kolsch 45 Coming Soon

Short’s Brewing has a newbie hitting shelves soon called Kolsch 45.  (Think Billy Dee Williams.)  Three batches of Kolsch 45 were brewed.

This thirst quencher is just what you need on a hot summer day. Kolsch beer originated in Cologne, Germany and is unique in that it is a warm fermented ale, but is aged like most traditional German lagers at a cool temperature. Though light in body and color, its prominent hoppiness and radiant yellow “straw” color set it apart. As you taste Kolsch 45, you’ll note that the sustaining head retains prominent, pleasant aromas. Light pilsen and munich malts lend grain flavors, aiding in the crisp, refreshing nature of this beer. Hop bitterness is present but complimentary with hardly any lingering resonance.

Style: Kolsch
Availability: 12 oz bottles, Draft.  (Limited to 40 half barrels, 900 cases)

Bell’s To Use 100 Year Old Fermenters In New Project

Bell’s cut the ribbon on their new brewhouse last week, giving the brewery much needed room to grow.  The news doesn’t stop there.  An interesting new project is surfacing, combining some 100 year old history and new brewing techniques for Bell’s.

John Mallett (Production Manager at Bell’s) met with John Stroh (who’s family started Stroh Brewing) and it was mentioned that there were 100 year old wooden fermenters in an old warehouse in Detroit, Michigan.  So now sits in the cellar of the new facility (in pieces apparently) 4 of these century old fermenters.

The plan is to reassemble these fermenters to create a new line of draft only beers brewed with open fermentation (open top).  Part of the brewhouse was built specifically to hold this big tanks.

No timeline on the projects completion, or when the first beers will be released.  [MLive]

New Belgium Red Hoptober. What’s the Difference?

This year, New Belgium will release a new fall seasonal dubbed Red Hoptober.  Sounds a little (or a lot) like their recent seasonal – Hoptober.  So what’s the difference?

According the the local New Belgium rep, the difference between Hoptober and Red Hoptober is the use of El Dorado Red hops.   The hops have been around for about two years.  They will come from CLS Farms in Washington State.    The new hops will give the fall seasonal a tropical, fruity flavor it.

Look for it in Late July/August, 2012.

Brewdog Brews with Bacon & Blueberries

Ok, so it’s  a pilot beer for a pilot system but still sounds rocking.  The description of Lumberjack Breakfast Stout:

The beer we brewed was devised by Tim and is a Lumberjack Breakfast Stout. A decadent, indulgent and encapsulating malt base that benefits from the addition of oats and smoked malt in the mash tun. Generous amounts of blueberries and maple syrup was added to the kettle during the boil and we added some killer artisinal coffee at the end of the boil. Oh and we also added some bacon.

It tops out at 11% ABV.  [Brewdog]
