Casella Wines, makers of Australian wine Yellow Tail have moved into beer making. Next to the winery in Yenda stands a brewery with the ability to make nearly a half a million gallons of beer annuals. Two bottling lines capable of 35,000 bottle fill an hour each are also installed. The first offering is called Arvo, that is currently available in two versions – Brew 34 and Brew 51. The brewery is looking for the drinking collective to vote on the best. As it stands right now, there is no plan to export to the U.S. [ArvoBeer]

Michigan Brewery Proves Nickelback Still Sucks Two Years Later
This is the past catching up with the present, thanks to Reddit. Dark Horse Brewing Co in Marshal, Michigan was asked if they would like their beer featured in a Nickelback music video. The brewery didn’t go for it. Apparently they are holding out for Slayer. From the 2010 blog post entry:
…The guy on the phone said, “we’d like to have your delivery truck pull up to this frat party and wheel up a bunch of Dark Horse, then we’ll get some crowd shots of the kids holding your cans”. Aaron replied “we don’t do cans we have bottles”, the guy said that would be fine. It’s obvious that this would be a great opportunity for us and maybe get some mainstream youth into craft beer rather than the swill. However, none of us at the brewery really care for the band (or frat parties) so our knee jerk reaction is “no thanks”. But how cool would it be to see our beer in a video? Aaron said, “Why cant it be some cool band like Slayer?” The guy that called said the lead singer is familiar with our brand. What does that mean? Does the lead singer of Nickleback drink craft beer?
Now that the story is back in the mainstream again, Huffington Post contacted Dark Horse head breweer Aaron Morse for his thoughts after the fact. Guess what? Nothing has changed. “I absolutely hate that band,” Morse said today. “It’s shit rock and roll that doesn’t deserve to be on the radio.”
Atlanta now has two craft beer tour companies to choose from. 6 months ago, it had zero. Atlanta Beer Tours and Atlanta Brews Cruise both started operating in May, 2012. The rates range from $45 – $60 dollars. Bob Townsend writes about it in his most recently article for the AJC.
…That the tours suddenly popped up around the same time is something of a coincidence and a confirmation that Atlanta was ripe for this kind of business, agree Brews Cruise owner Sandy Roberts and Beer Tours owner Dan Fontaine.
Goose Island Brewing will officially beging distribution to Georgia on September 13th. Three beers are slated to rollout in the state at launch- Sofie, Matilda, Pere Jacques. All will arrive on draft initially, bottles to follow. Pepe Nero will alos come to the state when bottles arrive. Goose will be distributed through Atlanta Beverage, Eagle Rock (confirmed.) Potentially – Leon Farmer & Co, La Grange will also carry GI.
Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in wine barrels with orange peel, Sofie is a tart, dry, sparkling ale. A subtle, spicy white pepper note, a hint of citrus from the orange peel and a creamy vanilla finishmake Sofie an intriguing choice for Champagne drinkers and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian Saisons. Availability: 12/4 pks, Draft.
Wild in character, with a slightly fruity aroma and a spicy yeast flavor that is as unique as it is satisfying — Matilda is an intriguing choice for beer and wine lovers alike. Dry and quenching, it’s the perfect accompaniment at the dining table or for casually socializing at the bar. Availability: 12 oz/ 4pks, Draft
Brewed with loads of malt and Belgian yeast, Pere Jacques is a wonderfully fruity, malty ale. Pere Jacques’ complex flavors stand shoulder to shoulder with the Belgian Dubbels enjoyed in the world’s finest beer bars. At the dining table it’s the perfect alternative to a glass of vintage port. Availability: 12 oz/4 pks, Draft.
Green Flash Brewing just launched in Georgia and Alabama in the past week. One of the most interesting nuggets shared with me after meeting the crew was that the brewery wants to build on the east coast. Get this – NOT Asheville. Well, not first anyway. Georgia could potentially be on the list. Thanks to the stylings of Craft Beer Business Daily (paid subscription only) it is revealed that the brewery is looking to spend close to $12 million.
Louisiana is the brewery’s next distribution stop. Start your speculating.
