No clue what it is, but sounds tasty.

Deschutes Brewing Infection Issues

Have one of these? Or better yet, had an 2009 Abyss from Deschutes Brewing that didn’t seem to taste right?  You’re tasting brett.  An unintentional side-effect of the use of a wild yeast in the brewery.  Dissident, an overwhelmingly popular Oud Bruin uses brett yeast for the sour flavor.  The Abyss- and imperial stout doesn’t.  Some of the 2009 batch of Abyss was found to have the unwelcome yeasty guest.  Some of Mirror, Mirror an American Barleywine also is found to harbor brett. There is one thing I want to stress with this.  As a biologist, this really isn’t a result of sloppy brewing techniques.  Brettanomyces is by nature – wild.  It’s a rebel. Uncontrolled.  Deschutes attempts to be diverse in their brewing styles.  Sometimes things just don’t go your way.  Regardless of how you hard try.

From Deschutes Blog:
We have detected in our lab a similar condition to The Abyss 2009 where some (not all) of the bottles have brett in them. It is interesting in that there seems no way to tell short of general tendencies in storage conditions where the brett will develop to sensory detection levels.

At Deschutes Brewery we take these things seriously. We know many of the wine barrels we use will have brettanomyces (wild yeast that produces flavors that are not desired in some beer styles) in them (just ask any winemaker). Going forward, we have purchased a flash pasteurizer and all beer from barrels is now pasteurized (killing the brettanomyces) before it is blended with beer from tanks (that is not pasteurized). Then the final blend is bottle conditioned so all beer is alive when you get it. 2010 The Abyss was treated this way.

As for the Mirror Mirror or 2009 The Abyss, we will refund and arrange shipment for unopened bottles back to the brewery. As with any of our beers if someone has an unsatisfactory experience, we will make it right. Unfortunately, we cannot compensate for above market pricing paid over the internet or other “extra-market” sources, nor can we send a replacement beer in lieu of payment. Suffice it to say, however, we stand behind our beer and the experiences we deliver. You can contact us directly through our website.

Big fan of Deschutes.  Best of luck in the future.

Georgia Mulls Sunday Sales Today

The Georgia Senate will begin discussing a bill (Senate Bill 10) today that would allow for Sunday sales.  Like the recent growler discussion, the ability for an off premise site to sell on Sunday would be decided by the local governments.

Grocery stores (Kroger/Target/Publix/Walmart) & package stores would be allowed to sell beer & wine on Sundays with the passage of the bill.  There are many proponents of the bill that feel the current law preventing sales on Sunday is religiously motivated and should be changed.  Starting at 1pm today, the discussion begins.  NOTE: This is the very beginning of the discussion. Not a vote to legalize…

Updates to follow… Follow @jasbragg on Twitter, who is at the senate in person…

UPDATE 1:50pm: Passes Senate committee. Next up, a floor vote.

Brooklyn Sorachi Ace Promoted

A few sources close to Brooklyn Brewing’s distributors are telling me that the brewery has promoted their recent Brewmaster’s Reserve Sorachi Ace to a year round offering.

Sorachi Ace is a farmhouse ale released early 2010 brewed with a rare unique hop Sorachi ace.  It was developed in Japan at Sapporo Brewery in 1988.  Ace is a cross between British Brewers Gold and Saaz hop varieties.  This hop is very lemony in smell and flavor.  Unlike other offerings by Brooklyn, Sorachi Ace features only this hop.  Ace is unfiltered, uses a proprietary Belgian yeast strain, and is dry hopped also with Sorachi.  Also bottle re fermented.

Ace became quite popular very fast, and with Brooklyn Brewing’s recent expansion promoting this beer seems like a no-brainer.

Walgreen’s Now Selling Big Flats Beer

National chain Walgreen’s has started selling beer after a dry 16 years.  Interestingly enough, they will be selling their own “house beer”.

Most house named beers – are brewed by someone else as is the case for Walgreen’s.  The beer – a lager, is brewed by The Winery Exchange in upstate New York.  The beer has a website of course BigFlats1901.com.  Big Flats was apparently first released in December, 2010.

Description:
Brewed in upstate New York, Big Flats 1901 Premium American Lager pays homage to the flat boats that traveled the area’s rivers delivering goods to early settlers. Just as the water played a vital role in the settlers’ quality of life, the pristine water used in the brewing of Big Flats 1901 Premium Lager is vital to the crisp, fresh taste of this traditional American brew.

“It’s the water that makes it.”

Big Flats will be quite cost effective – coming in at $3 a 6pk! That’s about .50 a beer.   More than half the stores in the U.S. are already carrying it.  Walgreens has over 7,000 stores.  Hey, I guess every beer worth a try once right?

Style: American Pale Lager

4.5% ABV

Foothills Brewing Acquires Carolina Beer Brands

Foothills Brewing (Winston-Salem, NC) has purchased Carolina Beer Company, makers of Cottonwood Ales & Carolina Ales.  The purchase is not only for beer labels but the brewing equipment also.

The change in ownership will not impact the Carolina & Cottonwood Brands.  It will actually increase the distribution of Carolina Beer Company’s brands.

Quoting Jamie Bartholomaus FootHills Brewmaster:
“Carolina Beer wanted production of its beloved brands to be in North Carolina, and we are glad to accommodate. For those of us who enjoy a cold Carolina Blonde or Cottonwood Ale, rest assured that production will remain uninterrupted and the brewing integrity of Carolina Beer brands will be completely preserved as we transition ownership to Foothills.”
