Sierra Nevada Rules Out TN & VA. Some Search Parameters, New Brands

Everyone is wondering where Sierra Nevada’s new brewery will be built.  A few spots have been ruled out.

Blount County, Tennessee

Blount County is no longer under consideration for the Sierra Nevada project,” the release states. “We appreciate the interest the brewing company had in operating a plant in Blount County and understand their reasons for not locating here.

Christiansburg, Virginia

The Roanoke Times that brewery took Montgomery County out of consideration because the location that it was eying is now under contract with Utah-based Backcountry.com.

Sierra Nevada has been taking a  good bit into consideration before building this new brewery.  Parameters include –

School System (workers have kids)
Water Quality (Key ingredient in beer)
Community Quality (They take pride in beer, people, and quality of life)
Price and sustainability.  Even the brewery at Chico could fail so don’t get financially cock with new location build.
Logistics are a concern, but things like a railroad aren’t  a full requirement.

Interestingly, the new east coast location could see new brands and brews, specifically for the east coast according to assistant brewmaster Terrance Sullivan.

With Sierra doing a little more barrel aging (starting in 2012) the east coast see beers aged in Jim Beam/Jack Daniels barrels, while the west sees different sets of local whiskey barrels.

At any rate, Sierra is definitely evolving.

The venture is called a craft-brew incubator, or think tank, that will “find new opportunities in brewing.  New recipes, techniques, reviving old recipes, etc.  Stacy Steinmetz, also formerly of Magic Hat will be joining the team.

Alchemy & Science will be headquartered in Burlington, Vermont.  It will be a subsidiary of Boston Beer.

…We decided Alchemy & Science should be a subsidiary of Boston Beer and that Alan should run it. I told him the mission should be to make great craft beer in any way, place or style that he thought made sense,” Koch added.

VID: Delaware Native Ale Uses States 1st Honorary Yeast Strain

Delaware now has an honorary yeast strain.  As you can probably imagine, it has something to do with Sam Calagione and Dogfish Head.

Calagione wanted to create a true Delaware state collaboration.

“Wouldn’t it be neat if in Delaware, we put together a project that celebrates how well all these different communities do work together here in Delaware,” he said he thought at the time. “Maybe in some small symbolic way, we can show that the communities can work well together, even at a time in D.C. when that really wasn’t happening.

So, he went to work.  The beer is called Delaware Native Ale.  It is a collaboration between Dogfish Head, Abbott’s Mill in Milford, Fifer Orchards in Wyoming (Delaware), the University Of Delaware (GO BLUE HENS!) and the Delaware State government.

Abbott’s Mill hasn’t been used for nearly 50 years, milling over 400 pounds of barley.  Fifer Orchards and Calagione collected fruit flies to help carry the wild yeast strain.  Yeast DNA was sequenced at U of D. The orchard also provided peaches and pears for the brew.  DFH employee Chad Collier even provided some homegrown hops to DNA.

Honorary Yeast?

The yeast – dubbed DNA KA1, was made the states honorary strain by the Delaware Governor, Jack Markell in recent announcement about Delaware Native Ale.

Availability:  Delaware Native Ale will be on tap solely at the Rehobeth Beach Brewpub, tapping for the first time on Halloween.
