Sierra Nevada’s newest offering Ruthless Rye has hit shelves. Ruthless is an IPAbrewed with rye malt as a replacement for Glissade.
Ruthless IPA is brewed with this rustic grain for refined flavors — combining the peppery spice of rye and the bright citrusy flavors of whole-cone hops to create a complex ale for the tumultuous transition to Spring.
Style:IPA, brewed with rye malt Availability: 12oz bottles, draft. Seasonal. Taste Expectations: Spicy rye, mixes with pine & floral hop notes
You knew this beer as Abacus. ZD Wines has a wine called Abacus also. The winery thinks you are too dumb to know the difference, and sued Firestone Walker for trademark infringement. They settled out of court, and FW stopped using the Abacus name as of June, 2011. So that leaves the question – How the hell did they brewery decide on §ucaba? Imagine Abacus in a mirror. Backwards it would look pretty much like this Abacus = §ucabA. Hopefully ZD doesn’t sue for mirrored trademark infringement.
About the beer: Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combined with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak, with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. This is definitely a sipping beer, best served in a brandy snifter. This ale pairs well with dark chocolate and sturdy cheeses.
Style: Barleywine (Barrel Aged) Hops: Bittering–Bravo; Late Kettle–East Kent Golding Malts: Munton’s Pale, Crisp Maris Otter Pale, Munich, Dark & Light Crystal, Chocolate
Availability: 22oz bombers, boxed. Limited Draft. Arrival: Tap room debut, 1/28/12 Distro Area: CA, NV, OR, WA, AZ, CO, MO, Chicago, MA, NJ, NY, VA, PA, DC, MD

About Rouge: The research and development team of pilot head brewer Scott Jennings and pilot brewer Mark Hurd guided our beer-making journey over a long day in and out of the brewhouse. We came up with a hybrid American/Belgian imperial red ale made with Patagonia caramel malt and a variety of hops, and fermented with a special Belgian yeast strain.
Style: Belgian ? Availability: Draft only

More on the beer trip, read up at AJC Blogs. Thx to @CFreddie for heads up
Without further ado, meet Bud Light Platinum. The newest addition the Budweiser family. I must admit, I’ve been looking forward to trying this beer. When one of the biggest breweries on the planet makes a new beer, you can’t help but wonder about it.
The Basics: Platinum is almost 2% higher than its middle class sibling (at 4.2% ABV.) More corn was used in this brew to enhance the flavor, increase the alcohol, and maintain the light look and texture. 137 calories per 12oz. 4.4 carbs.
The Idea: Bud Light is far and away one of the highest selling brands in AB’s portfolio. Platinum is aligning itself with such recognition. Simply put, its the same beer you’ve come to know- just a little boozier & classier.
The Taste: A little sweeter for sure. The flavor has everything in common with the regular Bud Light. To be perfectly honest, without a regular Bud Light to try side by side it’s hard to discern the flavor variation. And no, the higher alcohol is not detectable.
Packaging: I bring this up for a reason. Blue glass. After doing some cursory research I have found that most recycling places do not take blue glass for recycling. That could be a black eye for the worlds largest recycler. It’s sleek though. It’s says “hey I’m classy, but I like to party.”
Overall:
The beer geeks will tear this to shreds for sure. However they aren’t the market for this beer so its of no consequence. I can totally see this selling well at nightclubs, golf courses, etc. First thing that comes to mind for me is the benefit of the higher alcohol content. When you’re drinking at sporting events at $8-$10 a pop, the 6% gives you a bigger bang for the buck.
More info should be available soon on BL Platinum’s new website – BLPlatinum.com, although it’s not active yet.

Ludacris To Open “Chicken & Beer” Restaurant in ATL Airport
The busiest airport in the world is going to get some Ludacris love. The Atlanta City Council recently approved a $3 billion dollar package that includes the new Chicken & Beer restaurant. This isn’t Chris Bridges first restaurant. Straits in Atlanta will be closing soon (if it hasn’t already?) in order to put all the efforts into this new undertaking.
The image above is Luda’s 2003 album covered titled Chicken & Beer. The best quote in regards to the opening came from the creator himself:
WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE BUSIEST AIRPORT ON THE PLANET!! THIS IS HISTORY!!#chickenandbeer
What beer? I can’t wait to find out. @Ludacris remember Atlanta based BeerStreetJournal for the VIP opening ok?
Nearly 2 years ago, SweetWater Brewing retired Summer Hummer (a seasonal witbier) in lieu of Sch’Wheat in the year round lineup. The beer was introduced as a “gateway” beer for many drinkers making their first foray into beers that aren’t light lagers. The beer has done well over the past 2 years in the line year round lineup, but in 2012 it won’t make the cut. Sch’Wheat has been suspended in the coming brew-year to make way for some new exciting brews. (and some oldies making returns.)
