Weyerbacher Sour Black Drops This Friday

Sour Black, Weyerbacher’s follow up to Rapture, arrives Friday.  The beer is a black ale aged in pinot noir barrels, the same barrels used to age Rapture. The black ale base for this beer has never been released in any other form by Weyerbacher.

Flavor Expectations per Weyerbacher:  Brettanomyces lambicus was added to the barrels adding a nice acidity.  It’s fruity and tart with just enough roasted character; a truly delightful dark ale.

Style: Black Ale  (Barrel Aged)

Availability: 750 ml bottles, Corked & caged. 350 cases produced
Arrival: 6/29/12, 4:30 pm.  Brewery only. No distribution.

Brewdog has bottled Abstrakt AB:10 this week.  This 11.5% ABV beer is an imperial brown ale aged in Spanish sweet red barrels from Malaga.

Stewart Bowman, our Head Brewer, devised an Imperial Brown Ale designed to perfectly complement the wine flavours and extract maximum depth and character from the giant barrels. We also felt the Imperial Brown Ale was ideally suited to be barrel aged and as well as the infusion of the Malaga wine character will also benefit added complexity and maturity from the time in oak.

Mikkeller Ages Funky E Star In Expensive Wine

Mikkeller is diversifying the Funky E Star lineup.  The Belgian strong pale looks to return as a wild ale (over the standard pale ale)  this time around, aged in Chardonnay.  Depicted above is the second in the series of new Funky Es, aged in Sauternes wine barrels.  Sauternes is a French sweet wine from the Satuernais region, near Bordeaux.  Sauternes wines are a blend of three grapes (Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, & Muscadelle) infected with noble rot.  (Remember the recent Dogfish Head beer?)

Yet another expensive ingredient going into a Mikkeller beer, as Sauternes wines are pretty pricey due to the high cost of production.  Other high price ingredients include black truffles, and Kopi Luwak coffee.

…In honor of our old friend and chief consultant of our new brewery, we christened this Flanders-esque dark brown sour Oud Floris. We’re not sure any will make it out of the state, and release party will go down on June 24th at 4pm. Op uw gezondheid! (Dutch for: To Your Health!)

A Little Beer & A Litte Satan With Surly Pentagram

Surly PentagramSurly Brewing’s future satanic offering – Pentagram.  A wild ale aged in red wine barrels.  This evil beer looks like it would fly around the room if it could.  Surly mentioned this release back at GABF in October. It might become an annual release. It was apparently known as Surly Five from a year ago.

This Arcane Seal guards an enigmatic brew that is FUNKY, DARK, and SOUR.  If you choose t0 break the seal, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!  100% Brettanomyces Dark beer fermented stainless and aged in used red wine barrels. “Brett” is a unique yeast strain that produces flavors that would be considered offensive if  they were not intentional. Flavors of sour  cherry, tobacco, oak and classic “Brett” barnyard funk balanced by dark munich mall chewiness. Enjoy immediately or age at cellar temperature for a couple years.
