Nebraska’s Rare Inception

Nebraska Brewing Toasted Barn

One to add to the rare beer, “how do I get it” list – Nebraska Brewing’s Toasted Barn.  The brewery released details about the Inception Series, their newest barrel aged beer.

We bottle the first of what will be our extremely limited edition barrel aged experiments which we are calling The Inception Series.

Why Inception?  Well, it’s pretty simple really.  These are 1 or 2 oak barrels of something we felt was worthy of the time and effort necessary to head down a lenghty path of maturation and flavor enhancements.  This is our unveiling and it may be the start of something very nice indeed.

Will they make it to Reserve Series?  Maybe.  Will they ever be made again?  Maybe.  Will we even bottle all of the barrel aged experiments we have in the pipeline?  Maybe (I think you get the picture at this point)

We’ll decide later but at this stage, we do know that they are truly something special.  Small batch, limited edition barrel aged efforts.  Toasted Barn is our first so watch our Newsletter or Facebook for additional information on the Series and the beer itself.

These beers will only be available in our brewpub.

NEW RELEASE: Left Hand Fade To Black Vol 2

The second release of Left Hand Brewing’s Fade To Black series has arrived.  Fade To Black has replaced Left Hand Brewing’s Snowbound Ale as the brewery’s winter seasonal.  Last year, volume one was a foreign export stout.  This year’s edition is a smoked baltic porter.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find a lot of detail on this.   Either way, Volume 2 is here.  Here’s what I know –

Style: Baltic Porter (Smoked)

Taste Expectations: Smokey, but not overwhelming. Touch of molasses shines through the smoke.  Twinge of dark fruit. Slightly warming.

Availability: 12oz/6pks.  Draft.  Nov-March. Seasonal.  Recipe changes each year.

8.5% ABV

RARE BEER: Mikkeller Beer Geek Bacon

Back in March, I mentioned Mikkeller’s Beer Geek Breakfast – a coffee infused imperial stout with oatmeal.  In tasting, you will note bittersweet chocolate notes, offset by sweet oatmeal.  Roasted malts and coffee are present.  Coffee is stronger on the palette than in the nose.  If you have had it, you understand how delicious it is.  Well, here’s another one to excite your palate.  Introducing Rauch Beer Geek Breakfast, known outside the United States as Mikkeller’s Beer Geek Bacon.  Now beer is truly for breakfast.  This edition is a smoke beer version of the Beer Geek Breakfast.  I have frequently hear people describe smoke beers as having a “bacon” like flavor.  Throw in the coffee beans and oat flakes you are well on your way to starting the day right.

Taste Expectations: Roasted, smoky malts.  The smoke is a little bacon-like in flavor.  Roasted coffee beans.  Real. Espresso flavor.  Oatmeal softens the flavor past the smoke notes.  Complex and fun.

Beer Rundown:  (In addition to smoked malts)

Hops: Centennial, Cascade
Malts :  Pilsner, Oat, Smoked, Caramunich, Brown, Pale Chocolate, Chocolate
Extras :  Roasted Barley, Flaked Oats, Gourmet Coffee

NEW ARRIVAL: Great Divide Smoked Baltic Porter

One of the 2 newest beers in Great Divide (Denver, CO) post expansion days have arrived – Smoked Baltic Porter.  Great Divide recently completed a $1.2 million dollar expansion that added cooler space and an expanded bottling line, plus 2 1oo-barrel fermenters.  With those additions, Great Divide now has 7 fermenters, and can now bottle 125 more beers a minute.  Another added feature is the ability to laser label a bottling date on the labels.  These new releases add more depth to Great Divide’s portfolio.

From the label —
“Smoked Baltic Porter is the sultry sister of a storied style. Brewed with traditional German malts and hops, this dark lager gets its special twist from a hefty addition of Bamberg smoked malt. This smoldering, medium-bodied lager is sure to please.”

Taste Expectations: Flavors of smoke.  Molasses.  Darks fruits, roast malts.  Light touch of cocoa.

Availability: 22oz Bombers. Draft
