Magic Hat Howl Returns

Magic Hat ( Burlington, VT) has released their seasonal winter lager.  A black lager, with a roasty, dark, bold flavor.  Not every winter seasonal has to be an ale does it?

Commercial Description:
Born of dark and cold and snow in the marrow of the northeast’s longest night, HOWL comes in on wailing winds, with winter weary eyes burning holes in sunless shadows.  In it’s darkened depths out inner voids are warned.

Beer Rundown:

Hops: Apollo, Hallertau
Malts: Pale, Crystal, Carafa
Yeast: Lager

Taste Expectations: Bitter roasted coffee with a hint of chocolate. Smokey.  Consistent carbonation, balanced. Excellent style example.

NEW RELEASE: Duck Rabbit Schwarzbier

Duck Rabbit’s  Schwarzbier arrives today.  It was first released last year in a very limited batch only in bottles.  Schwarzbier (black beer) is a dark German lager that uses a bottom fermenting lager yeast, with no roasted barley. Dark malts used in brewing give the lager chocolate or coffee tones, depending on what was used.

Duck Rabbit’s head brewer/founder Paul Philippon describes –

“A refreshing summer beer (sometimes referred to as a black pils). In Duck-Rabbit fashion, we’ve made ours extra schwarzy. It’s very dark and quite roasty with plenty of noble hops for a crisp, thirst-quenching German character.”

Known Ingredients –

Hops:  Hallertau

Taste Expectations: Roasted malts. Coffee, semi sweet chocolate.  Some sweetness ties this black lager together.

Availability:  12oz bottles and draft.

NEW RELEASE: Avery Seventeen

Just released by Avery Brewing (Boulder, Co) is their 17th Anniversary brew.  Last year for their 16th, was a saison.  This year is a dry hopped black lager.

This edition emphasizes noble German hops with a dark malt profile.  It’s comparable to a schwarzbier or “black beer.”  Schwarzbier is a dark German lager that uses a bottom fermenting lager yeast, with no roasted barley. Dark malts used in brewing give the lager chocolate or coffee tones, depending on what was used.

From the label –

“After years of commemorating our anniversary with deliciously wild and weird ales, we decided to mix it up a bit and create our first Anniversary Lager. SEVENTEEN is a celebration and case study of the aromas and flavors of German hops. And knowing our fetish for those beautiful green cones, you can be confident that the contents of this bottle are excessively hopped for your olfactory pleasure. Many thanks to all and we hope you enjoy our lupulin dissertation. Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, imported German hops, and German yeast.”

Taste Expectations – Sweet toasted malts and chocolate.  This black lager is bready, with some caramel.  There is an underlying freshness to this lager.  German noble hops.

Availability – 22oz bombers.  One time, anniversary release.  Draft unspecified.
