Our Honey Rye Ale is made with pale, wheat, and rye malts. It also has a blend of four different caramel malts. We used 20% rye malt to give the beer a very good rye flavor and aroma. The extra rye also gives a fuller mouthfeel to the beer. We added a generous amount of wildflower honey as well. This gives the beer a sweet aroma and flavor. We used Willamette hops, but the beer is not very bitter and has very little hop aroma. This allows the flavors of the rye and honey to come through. The result is a full bodied, sweet, and malty beer.

Style: Rye Beer, brewed w/ honey
Hops: Willamette
Malts:  Pale, Wheat, Rye
Wildflower honey

Availability:  Draft only, one time release.

Improvisación Now Just Improv

Cigar City Brewing’s Improvisación got a shorter name and a much longer description.  AND since I took the time to write out the description, I think you should take some time to read it.   Improv is a brown ale, IPA, rye beer, with oatmeal. It’s a hot mess.

Label:
What you have here is an Oatmeal Rye India-style Brown Ale.  Now you might be thinking oatmeal, rye, brown ale, India-style; isn’t that a lot to be going on in just one beer? Well, yes it is. But that is the point.  Layers, Flavor elements building on and playing off of preceding elements, like a building wave; a growing crescendum of taste bud temptation; a wall of sound expressed through flavor a channeled toward your mouth.  This beer isn’t for everyone.  In many ways it is more than a little weird.  It is certainly doesn’t fit into any category.  It isn’t a brown ale, not just a brown ale anyway.  It certainly isn’t a n IPA.  Calling it a rye beer would be selling it shortIn the spirit of great things that are conceived in the moment, but perfected through passionate repetition it started life as an improvisation and grew from there and it might not be for you.  But if the though of big spicy rye notes, a wallop of a hop punch, multitudinous layers of caramel, sweet almost, and a respectable balancing gravity sound intriguing then you might want o wing it and give Improv a try.

Style: American Brown Ale (-ish)
Availability:  750ml bottles.  Seasonal, varying release dates.

Karl Strauss Releasing Spicy Rye Offering

Karl Strauss Brewing (San Diego, CA) will be releasing Boardwalk Black Rye late summer this year.  Speaking from experience, Karl’s specialty releases are something you want to get your hands on where ever you are.

When the sun goes down past Crystal Pier, the postcard view of the Pacific fades into the dark. As the tourists head off down the boardwalk, a distinctly local vibe returns to PB. Boardwalk Black Rye is a spicy black ale with a hop profile that’s pure West Coast. Black and caramelized rye malts add complex spicy and roasted notes, while three massive additions of Ahtanum hops provide the vibrant floral aroma and citrus hop character of a Double IPA. Keep Boardwalk out of the cellar, this hoppy offering is best enjoyed fresh

Style: Rye Beer
Hops: Ahtanum, Warrior
Malts: CaraRye, Caramel 80, Pale, Black Rye
Yeast: Chico
Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft.

Arrival: August, 2011.  California distribution area.
