Stillwater Remix Project: Rio de Sauvin

Stillwater Remix Project Rio de Sauvin

Stillwater Ales (Baltimore, MD) is remixing a familiar offering from Against the Grain –  Rico Sauvin. ATG’s version is an IPA with Nelson Sauvin hops.

Stillwater is keeping with the tropical [Brazilian] theme by creating a tropical farmhouse ale, brewed with mango and passionfruit juice.

The boys at Against the Grain made a beer based on a fictional “sexy man” and uhh, his sheep friend.. So sticking with the theme and the fact that we have been spending some time in Brazil lately, we decided to amp up the sexy and host a tropical orgy of fruit flavors, hops, malt and yeast.. Umm Yeah.”

Stillwater Rio De Sauvin is estimated to ship in December, 2014.

Style: Farmhouse Ale (w/ Mango Juice, Passionfruit Juice)
Availability: 750ml Bottles
Arrival: December, 2014 (Estimated)

7.7% ABV

Cigar City & Amager To Collaborate (Plus Collab Review)

Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, FL) are headed to Denmark next month to collaborate with Amager Bryghus. If you look at Amager’s lineup, you can be sure that the result will be a pretty dark beer.

In honor of this meet up, the brewery will be tapping Papsø’s Passion Fruit Porter.  6% ABV beer brewed passion fruit as a nod to Henrik Papso. Henrik is the “inside” guy at the brewery that obtains certain special ingredients over there. A bit like Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption.

Cigar City has been pretty busy with  collaborations too.  Recent ones include:

Maui & Jolly Pumpkin Releasing “Superhuman” Collaboration

Maui Sobrehuman Palena oleMaui Brewing Co (Lahaina, Maui, HI)  has just announced a new collaboration brew with Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales (Dexter, MI).  Sobrehumano Palena ‘ole will be the brewery’s first collaboration in a can.  The name is a blended Spanish-Hawaiian term for “superhuman.”

What’s the beer?
Sobrehumano Palena ‘ole is a red ale brewed with liliko’i (passionfruit) and cherries.   Each brewery will add its own unique spin – as Maui will ferment normally (arriving in cans), and Jolly Pumpkin will make it  a barrel aged sour (in bottles).

Where?
Maui will produce 4,000 cases & 80 barrels, distributed in all 11 states in which the brewery currently ships.   Ed. Note: Jolly Pumpkin most likely will not know yield until barrel blending time.

How Did These Two Find Each Other?
“John and Garrett were planning their collaborations for 2012 and because John is from Michigan and coming home for the holidays my name came up.  This whole idea came together really fast — just weeks before John’s visit.  It’s been a very challenging blend to develop — I’m super-excited about it and a little intimidated at the same time. I’ve been enchanted by Hawaii for years and it’s been great to work with everyone at MBC and get to know them.  I always enjoy collaborations but this one is something really special.”

Style: Red Ale (Maui) / Ambiguous Style (Jolly Pumpkin)  (w/ Cherries, Passionfruit)
Availability: 12 oz cans, Bottle size TBA
Arrival: June, 2012 (SAVOR)

New Belgium Fresh Hop & Prickly Passion Round Out 2011

New Belgium Brewing rounds out their 2011 Lips of Faith series with these 2 new releases: Fresh Hop India Pale Ale and Prickly Passion Saison.   These releases follow the recent and very popular Clutch and Kick Lips Of Faith releases.

Fresh Hop India Pale Ale – IPA, 7% ABV, 70 IBUs.  Packs a citrus punch of Amarillo, Centennial and Cascade hops, straight off the vine in Washington State.  This brazen and deliciously bitter IPA pours deeply golden with the slight haze of a really hoppy beer.  The array of hops gives a sharp blast, but the finish is light and dry.

Prickly Passion Saison – Saison, 8.5% ABV.  In a fruit medley of passion fruit and prickly pear, Prickly Passion Saison is New Belgium’s return to farmhouse ales.  The fruit juices combine with the tropical esters of an earthy Saison yeast, creating a broad and reaching mango-like character.  Deemed “ostentatiously amber,” this Lips selection is guaranteed to provoke the palate.

Hops: Target, Liberty
Malts: Pale, C-80
Fruits: Prickly Pear, Passionfruit

“We opted not to make our fourth quarter Lips selections exceptionally wintery or heavy,” said New Belgium brewer Grady Hull.  “Instead, we are hosting a hops harvest party and bringing uncommon fruit selections to the table, both of which sparkle with holiday flavor.”What? No stouts? It’s wintertime!

Availability: 22oz bombers, November-February.
