Mikkeller Spontaneous Series 2013: SpontanMandarin

Mikkeller Spontanmandarin

Mikkeller unleashes a new round of Spontaneous Series beers in 2013. There are quite a few on the way as you see below. Tack SpontanMandarin. You know cassis as the black currant. The fruit is added to the base beer, a lambic fermented in oak.

Mandarin will join SpontanPeachSpontanElderflower,

 SpontanRosehipSpontanRosehip, SpontanCassis, and SpontanGooseberry.

Style: Lambic (w/ Mandarin Oranges)
Availability: 11.2 oz bottles
Arrival: TBA

7.7% ABV

Lambic, The Rundown.

A lambic is a spontaneously fermented beer. What’s that? The beer is exposed to wild yeasts and bacteria. In this case (most likely) these wild yeasts live in the oak of the barrels they are aged in. The result is a tart/sour tasting beer.

Heavy Seas Releases Riptide White IPA

Heavy Seas (Baltimore, MD) has launched their newest bottle offering – Riptide White IPA.  This new brew is a crossover of sorts, as it has the malt body of witbier, but hopped like an IPA. The best of both worlds really as the weather warms up.

When brewing Riptide the brewery filled the hopback (a piece of brewery equipment used to hop your beer) with orange peel, and coriander, in addition to a healthy hop dose. The finished product is fun to sort out with each sip.

Style: White IPA (w/ Sweet & Bitter Orange Peel, Coriander)
Hops: Czech Saaz, French Strisselspalt, Calypso, Centennial, Cascade, Citra
Malts: Torrified Wheat

Food Pairings: Grilled Fish, Panko Crusted Seafood, Tropical Fruit

Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft. April-June

7.25% ABV

Widmer Brothers/ Cigar City Collab: Gentleman’s Club

Widmer Brothers Gentleman's Club

Meet newbie creation from Widmer Brothers (Portland, OR) Gentleman’s Club – a collaboration with Cigar City Brewing. True to form with both breweries, the beer boasts an interesting list of additions. Look for cherries, lemons, and oranges in this brew, aged on oak spirals. (Little spiral oak pieces used to enhance the flavor.)

You’ll note the “old fashioned style ale” is an homage to the “Old Fashioned” cocktail made with orange & lemon dating back to the late 1800’s, invented in a gentleman’s club. The brewers of Cigar City (Tampa) road tripped

out to Widmer in Oregon for this collaboration, who will package this brew.

Style: American Strong Ale (w/ Cherries, Oranges, Lemons, Oak Aged)
Availability: 22oz bombers
Arrival: TBA

9.5% ABV
