Terrapin Georgia Theatre Sessions “Old Tankard” In Stores

Boxes of Terrapin’s beer to benefit the Georgia Theatre are quickly arriving in Atlanta stores.  Each 22 oz bottle is individually boxed.

From Brewer Spike –

The Brew 1 — March — “The Iron Tankard” Old Stock Ale — The building started as a YMCA in 1889 and had a huge iron swimming pool in the basement.

From Spike: Iron Tankard “Old Stock Ale” is the first of four beers in Terrapin’s Georgia Theatre Sessions. It is brewed with a generous portion of crystal malts for a full body and is lightly hopped. This malt forward beer has flavors of dark dried fruit, mellow alcoholic warmth and is unfiltered for your listening pleasure.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Georgia Historic Trust for Historic Preservation Fund to rebuild the Georgia Theater. To make things even more interesting, there is one Golden Ticket hidden among each of the Georgia Theater Sessions brews. This means that four lucky winners will receive a lifetime pass to the new Theater.

I hope that you are the lucky winner!

Cheers! – Spike

CASK ALERT! Terrapin Georgia Theatre Sessions Vol 1

Recently I’ve gotten A LOT of questions about when this beer benefiting the rebuild of the Georgia Theatre is going to finally arrive.  Official word from Terrapin? Not sure yet.  Each of the boxes had to be individually hand numbered and boxed, so it’s been a little time consuming.  A release party has already been held in Athens. (Thanks @jbyce)  I’m pleased to announce that your first taste of this beer is coming soon.  On April 6th, Manuel’s Tavern will have a cask of “The Iron Tankard.”

“The Iron Tankard” is the first release of 4 releases dedicated to the rebuild of The Georgia Theatre, taken by fire last year.  The Iron Tankard refers to a huge iron swimming pool that used to reside in the basement of the building when it started as a YMCA in 1889.  Tankard is an Old Ale, fitting for the age of the building itself.  Old Ales are characterized by a strong malt character.  Brewers used to transfer the ale to vats/oak casks to age for a long time.  Thus, Old Ale.

New in Bottle – Founder’s Old Curmugeon

Arriving alongside Nemesis this week is Old Curmudgeon Ale both from Founder’s Brewing, Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Old Curmudgeon is an old ale (simply meaning aged, usually in oak.)

Curmudgeon is brewed with molasses with a huge focus on malts.  Then it is aged in oak barrels.   The end result is a malty but sweet strong ale.  You will note caramel malts, raisin tones in the nose and palette, subtle hints of a vanilla, with some noticeable alcohol.  Its very drinkable, you can easily forget it’s almost 10%.  If you enjoyed Dirty Bastard (malty scotch ale) or Backwoods Bastard (scotch ale in bourbon) Then don’t pass this up.

Available seasonally in small batches.  It shipped with Nemesis. Should starting popping up today.  Sightings to come.  Follow @AtlBeerMaster on Twitter.
