Sam Adam’s LongShot Series 2013: Zach Adams Magnificent Seven IPA

Samuel Adams Longshot Magnificent Seven

Samuel Adams is proud to announce that the annual quest for exceptional homebrews has yet again returned a wide spectrum of flavorful beers that continue to impress. Connecticut resident Zack Adams is one of 3 winners hand selected from over 1,000 entrants by industry leaders including Tony Forder from Ale Street News, Win Bassett of All About Beer, Bob Townsend of Atlanta Journal-Constitution and beer writers John Holl, Jay Brooks, and Marty Nachel. Together, they selected the winning brews based on the American Homebrewers Association Beer Judge Certificate Program guidelines. Each beer was carefully evaluated on the aroma, appearance, flavor and mouthfeel according to the style category under which it was submitted.

Zack Adams’s Magnificent Seven IPA is described as “a showcase of seven American hop varieties that impart a big piney and lingering resinous flavor. A true Imperial American IPA, this brew pours a rich bronze color. The slightly sweet malt character is pleasantly balanced by a pronounced hop bitterness with grapefruit, pine and earthy notes from the American hops. This medium-bodied IPA also delivers caramel, citrus, lemon and piney aromas.”

Look for this beer, as well as the 2 other winners, in the soon-to-be-launched LongShot Series Samplers.

Sam Adam’s Longshot Series 2013: Dave Anderson’s Strawberry Lager

Samuel Adams Longshot Strawberry Lager

Each year, founder and brewer Jim Koch and the other brewers at Samuel Adams recognize the most talented homebrewers for their world class brews through the Samuel Adams LongShot American Homebrew Contest. When Samuel Adams began the contest more than 15 years ago, it was Jim’s dream that the contest could launch some aspiring home brewers into bigger and better things. Every year over 1,000 beers are entered into the contest allowing for just 3 prestigious winners whose beers will then be brewed by Sam Adams and distributed in special LongShot Series sampler packs.

The first of this year’s winners, Dave Anderson, works in the packaging department at Sam Adams. His submission, a Strawberry Lager, is described as “a bright and fresh wheat beer, with a strong strawberry character balanced with toffee and citrus notes – the brewer’s vision of the perfect summertime beer to enjoy after a round of golf on a hot day. Brewed with fresh strawberries, this beer pours a bright golden color and imparts a malty sweetness with hints of lemon and earthiness. Strawberry Lager finishes with a wonderful intensive strawberry flavor without being overwhelming and leaves a lingering creamy sweetness on the palate.”

Sam Adam’s Longshot Series 2012 Winners – James Schirmer’s Beerflower Wheat

Samuel Adams Longshot Beer Flower Wheat

In the words of Jim Koch himself, “America’s passion for homebrewing and craft beer is at an all time high, making this year’s competition more competitive than ever. This year, even the President of The United States is homebrewing at the White House. As a homebrewer for more than 25 years, I know it’s a great hobby – but it can also be a launching pad into a career or a start-up a business.” Sam Adams is proud to announce this year’s winners of their LongShot Series with the hopes of launching these home brew hopefuls into the next phase of their beer careers.

One of this year’s winners, James Schrimer, is one of said hopefuls.  His beer, the Beerflower Wheat, is described as “an ideal balance of smooth, sweet malt flavors with an exotic kick of citrus and herbal notes. Brewed with hot summer weather and fun gatherings in mind, this American wheat beer pours a dark amber color, and imparts a light floral and sweet aroma with the delicate flavors of hibiscus. Beerflower Wheat is a medium bodied brew that finishes crisp and refreshing on the palate.”

Look for this along with the other LongShot Series winners in an upcoming sampler pack released from Sam Adams.

Sam Adams Longshot 2012 Variety Pack Now Available

The 2012 Samuel Adam’s Longshot 6 pack is now available.  Each year, Jim Koch and the brewery recognize the most talented home brewers in the United States.  A panel of judges narrows down the field submissions.  The finalists are narrowed to 2 home brewers and 1 Sam Adams employee.  This year’s winners are:

A Dark Night in Munich: by Corey Martin.  Corey has been working on his Munich Dunkel for some time and the result is this amber, medium-bodied brew. With a nice malty backbone, this lager has roasty, slightly spicy notes and a traditional doughy character from the yeast. It is well worth the time he took to perfect it.

Derf’s Secret Alt: by Samuel Adams Employee Fred Hessler.  Fred wanted to go big or go home with his homebrew and decided to brew a kicked up Sticke Alt. This full-bodied ale has a big, malty character balanced by subtle orange and grapefruit notes from the hops. With a light amber color, this brew has a sweet finish.

Five Crown Imperial Stout: by Joe Formanek.  For the past 15 years, Joe has been brewing his Russian Imperial Stout. This malt-forward brew has a rich complexity, with roasty and chocolate notes, yet enough hop bitterness to balance out the sweetness. This satisfying winter brew is full-bodied with an enjoyable velvety smoothness.

Availability: 12 oz bottles, 2 per 6 pk. One time brew.
