Napa Smith has a Crush

Napa Smith Crush

Napa Smith Brewing is nestled in Napa Valley, California – in the heart of wine country.  Don Barkley, 30 year veteran of brewing approaches brewing with the idea that the world needs great beer that makes food taste even better.  Being from Napa, it’s only fitting that this next release is brewed with grapes.

From Napa Smith:

Crush Beer is our autumn offering developed in tribute to the grape harvest here in Napa Valley. In keeping with the Bavarian tradition of Oktoberfest, this beer is an Amber Lager made with traditional malts. Since we are in the wine country, we also add a small amount of grapes to each batch. They say “It takes a lot of great beer at harvest time to make great wine.” It’s appropriate for Napa Smith to use grapes in one of their beers, since they also run a winery.

Style: Amber Lager (Brewed w/ Grapes)
Availability: 22oz bottles
Arrival: Fall

Brotherly Suds 2: A Brewer’s Beer

Here are some more details on the sure to be tasty collaboration headed for Philly Beer Week in June, 2011.  The name is Brotherly Suds 2..  The collab features Tom Kehoe (Yards),  John Trogner (Troegs), Brent Kintzer (Stoudt’s), Bill Covaleski (Victory) and Gordon Grubb (Nodding Head).  BS2 will be a lager – described by the group as a “brewer’s beer” not a beer geek beer. “A selfish beer.” Finding importance in layering flavors into the beer itself.

Brent Kintzer from Stoudt’s organized the collaborative and provided the equipment.  The malt bill was designed by Trogner & Covaleski.  The hops – Grubb & Kehoe.  The crowning touch of history & brewing comes from the yeast.  Fuhrmann & Schmidt Brewing Company was a Philly beer staple from 1906 until they closed their doors in 1975.  Brotherly Suds 2 will feature Schmidt’s yeast, bridging Philadelphia brewing past, and present. The beer debuts June 3, 2011. Video via Susquehanna Live.

Walgreen’s Now Selling Big Flats Beer

National chain Walgreen’s has started selling beer after a dry 16 years.  Interestingly enough, they will be selling their own “house beer”.

Most house named beers – are brewed by someone else as is the case for Walgreen’s.  The beer – a lager, is brewed by The Winery Exchange in upstate New York.  The beer has a website of course BigFlats1901.com.  Big Flats was apparently first released in December, 2010.

Description:
Brewed in upstate New York, Big Flats 1901 Premium American Lager pays homage to the flat boats that traveled the area’s rivers delivering goods to early settlers. Just as the water played a vital role in the settlers’ quality of life, the pristine water used in the brewing of Big Flats 1901 Premium Lager is vital to the crisp, fresh taste of this traditional American brew.

“It’s the water that makes it.”

Big Flats will be quite cost effective – coming in at $3 a 6pk! That’s about .50 a beer.   More than half the stores in the U.S. are already carrying it.  Walgreens has over 7,000 stores.  Hey, I guess every beer worth a try once right?

Style: American Pale Lager
