International IPA Day, August 4th

IPA Day

Social media meets hops for IPA Day – August 4th, 2011.  Below are details for the event…

Greetings Craft Beer Drinkers! Welcome to International #IPADay — the world’s largest celebration of craft beer.

International #IPADay is a grassroots movement created to unite the voices of craft beer enthusiasts, bloggers, and brewers worldwide, using social media as the common arena for connecting the conversation together.

On Thursday August 4th, craft beer drinkers across the social sphere and across the globe will raise pints in a collective toast to one of craft beer’s most iconic styles: the India Pale Ale. This celebrated style represents the pinnacle of brewing innovation with its broad spectrum of diverse brands, subcategories, and regional flavor variations — making it the perfect style to galvanize the craft beer’s social voice.

To participate, share your photos, videos, blog posts, tasting notes, recipes, thoughts with the world on Twitter Facebook, YouTube, WordPress, RateBeer, Foursquare, Gowalla, Yelp, Untappd or any other social media platforms you may use. Use the hashtag #IPADay in all of your posts and then see what others are saying by searching the hashtag on google, twitter or other social media resources.

Participants are also encouraged to organize “real-life” #IPADay events your local brewery, brewpub, restaurant, bar, home, or office. Share your events on the official #IPADay forum at RateBeer.com.

Deschutes Edition Of Boulevard Conflux ‘White IPA’

As mentioned earlier, Boulevard Brewing (Kansas City, MO) is collaborating with Deschutes Brewing (Bend, OR).  The breweries are creating a ‘white’ IPA.  Even more interesting – this collaboration doesn’t involve travelling.  The white IPA is created off a single recipe that will become unique when Deschutes & Boulevard brew it.  Each brewery is releasing this beer under their own labels.

Label:

Isn’t it how it always works? A few brewers sit around tippling and waxing poetic about what-ifs, wild ideas and untapped dreams when one suddenly proclaims “why not?” So the conflux series was born, bravely leaping corporate and geographic barriers to jointly explore uncharted beeratory.  Cheers, fellow explorers, cheers.

Second in a series, this citrusy, smooth white india pale ale is a fortuitous meeting of Deschutes’ hop skills and Boulevard’s deft wheat touch.  What’s 1800 miles when a great beer is at stake?

Style: Belgian IPA
Availability: 750ml Bottles, Draft.  All regions where Boulevard & Deschutes is distributed.

7.5% ABV

Deschutes Brewing will be distributed in Missouri soon. June — July launch date.

Founders All Day IPA Label Winner

Founder’s Brewing took a poll back in April asking people to vote for their new All Day IPA label.  Meet the winner.  The ABV is higher than 4%, so those hardcore session people are going to have a tough time with this one.  Another way to look at it: in the world of IPAs there aren’t many that are below 5% or even in the neighborhood of 4%.  A 4.7% IPA would be easier to drink over time.

About All Day IPA:
The beer you’ve been waiting for. Keeping your taste satisfied while keeping your senses sharp. An all-day IPA naturally brewed with a complex array of malts, grains, and hops. Perfectly balanced for aggressive aromatics, moderate bitterness and a remarkably clean finish. It’s the perfect companion for tall tales around the bonfire, working around the yard, or introducing great craft beer to your Uncle Ernie and Aunt Claudia.

Style: IPA
Hops: Simcoe, Amarillo, + others
Malts: 3 varieties – including Oats & Wheat

Taste Expectations: Fresh and hoppy, tropical fruits, wheat.
Availability: 12oz bottles, draft.
Arrival: TBA

All Day IPA won a silver medal at the 2010 GABF.

25 Years Of Harpoon Brewing

In celebrating 25 years of brewing Dan Kenary and Rich Doyle, founders of Harpoon Brewing bring you hoppy rye offering.  Rich & Dan’s IPA joins they brewery’s 100 Barrel series this month.  It is #37 in the series.  Harpoon was founded in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts.  In 2000, Harpoon purchased the Catamount Brewery and expanded to Winsor, Vermont.  Both locations have tap rooms & tours.

Brewing our Rye IPA has given us the opportunity to reflect on 25 years of Harpoon and yet another excuse to have a pint or two of beer together on the brewhouse floor.  As all good partnerships require give and take, we went back and forth on the specifics of this unfiltered Rye IPA. In choosing this style, we pooled our individual ideas and preferences to create something that we would both enjoy and, we hope, something that you will enjoy as well.

Style: Rye IPA
Hops: Centennial, Willamette, Chinook. Falconer’s Flight (dry hop.)
Malts: Pale, Marris Otter, Caramel 60, Flaked Rye, Vienna
Yeast: Harpoon House Strain
Taste Expectations: Fruity hop character, balanced with a spicy rye flavor.  The beer is full bodied, with a dry finish.
Availability: 22oz bombers. Draft. One time brew.
6.9% ABV, 54 IBUs

We’re going to release a number of beers in the coming weeks, but for one we aimed at capturing the essence of what Chicago is and how it’s people do what they do. Clearly our city hosts all kinds of interests, but we combed the fabric of this town and came back with: Pigs. Chicago has been romancing pigs and their tasty bodies in ways like never before. Pigs are hot, totally trending, and part of what we do. Chicago popular culture is running rampant with our succulent friends, while our history is steeped in pork parts. What we’re saying, is that Chicago has been entrenched in the pig for ages and we’re about to climax. Meat Wave is an english-bent India Pale Ale that will be our Chicago Craft Beer Week beer. Earthy delicious, this meat centric offering is for you, Chicago.

Midnight Sun Joins Canning Trend

Midnight Sun Brewing (Anchorage, AK) is expanding to cans.  2011 seems to be the year of the can.  A canning line is already in place at the brewery to start with Sockeye Red IPA.  Additional tanks were also purchased to help with the canning capacity.
