Leinenkugel Building A Barrel Aging Program

Leinies Barrel Aged Big Eddy Leinenkugel is experimenting with a barrel aging program.  The first experiments have been with Big Eddy Imperial Stout.  Eddy has spent time in bourbon and rye bourbon barrels.  Here’s the kicker, these releases don’t really exist.  Well, they do – but they don’t.  These little 7 oz bottles are just testers.  The brewers at Lenie’s took the first release of Big Eddy (2010) and aged it in (2) Heaven Hill for a full year.  The flavor of this beer is incredible.  (More on that in a minute.)

Also on the way are 2 NEW beers from Leinie’s:

Wee Heavy Scotch Ale. New style for Lenies.  2012 will see the release to 30 key accounts.  There will also be a barrel side project for Wee Heavy.  More rye bourbon & bourbon.

IPA.  The brewery has been itching to release a hoppy offering.  April 2012 will see this release.

There are other styles in development, and Leinenkugel’s expands their lineup.

So where does this leave the barrel aging?  First public release is about 2 years away.  It will take time for the brewery to build up a barrel inventory to move forward with the program.

How does it taste? Lovers of barrel aged beers should already start drooling over this release.  Caramel, Raisins, vanilla, molasses, rye & oak.  I found myself trying to get the last drops out of the bottle (I had to share 7ozs!)  2 years is too long to wait for more.

Below are pics of of the barrels at Lenies

Baxter Stowaway IPA

Baxter Stowaway IPABaxter Brewing Stowaway IPA.

More on Stowaway per the brewery:

Bold, complex flavors with a solid malt backbone and assertive hop profile, along with cold conditioning, give this beer its crisp, clean, hoppy finish.

Technical Specifications:

  • A proprietary blend of North American 2-row malted barley, including barley grown in Northern Maine’s Aroostook County
  • Domestic and imported “Character” malts provide complexity, color and body
  • 5 different hops varieties grown in the Pacific Northwest
  • Double dry-hopped during fermentation and conditioning
  • Clean, well attenuating, top-fermenting American ale yeast
  • Pure, soft water from Lake Auburn, Maine

6.9% ABV
69 IBU’s

Flavor Profile:

Deep amber-to-orangish in color; pours with a nice, creamy head; huge hop aroma of citrus, pine and grapefruit rind notes with a big, complex, and intense hop flavor that lingers for a very long time. The malt flavor up-front turns dry and crisp; full bodied and a dry finish with a pleasant, long lasting, hop aftertaste and beautiful lace left in the glass. Stowaway leaves you wanting more.

Bridgeport Hop Harvest 2011

Bridgeport  Brewing’s Hop Harvest 2011 is on shelves.  Fresh hop lovers will love the juicy hop flavors in this American IPA.

IN A WORD… HOPULENT! Bushels of fresh hops in every batch… any fresher and you’d have to pick them yourself.  This triple hopped, imperial style ale gets its most important ingredient from Willamette Valley aroma hops. Caramel malt joins forces with a touch of wheat to produce a deep amber color with a cloudy veil.  The result is an ale that will turn even the most pretentious hop fans jolly.

Style: American IPA (fresh hopped)
Taste Expectations:  Citrus hops, fresh and chewy. Followed by a nice caramel backbone.
Availability: 22oz bombers. Fall seaonal.

6.56% ABV
