Initial Details: Heavy Seas Plank II

Had a little chat with the southeast’s most popular beer bachelor from Heavy Seas Brewing, Kevin Fox. Looks like the Baltimore based brewery has finalized details about their second Plank release. Just a recap – this series was announced in early 2011. Plank is a brand new experiment by Heavy Seas showcasing unique wood aging treatments to add nuance and flavor to the beer. Each beer is allowed time to age on the wood during secondary fermentation. Plank I was an old ale aged yellow poplar – the first aged on that kind of wood.

That brings us to Plank II. It will be a doppelbock, aged on roasted eucalyptus and poplar. Heavy Seas has found that different head treatments applied to the wood changes the flavor profile, thus changing the beer. Hallertau hops will be used in this brew. (Brewing begins in January.)

Epic Exponential Double Skull Doppelbock

Epic Brewing (St. Lake City, UT) is adding Double Skull to their Exponential Series. The series is a side project/creativity line of beers for the brewery.

Brewed on November 18, 2011. Packaged December 20, 2011.

This style is orginally brewed as a “liquid bread” by fasting monks. A Doppelbock is rich, filling, strong lager. Our version is a warm reddish brown with an aroma of perserved fruit and dark toasted bread. This beer has six different malts and enough noble hops to balance but leave a malt-forward finish. Double Skull is both restrained and insistant. The carmel flavors are best sipped in cold weather but leave a nice lager finish.

Hops: Premiant, Tettnang, Perle
Malts: Muntons Maris Otter, Weyermann Pilsner, Bonlander Munich Malt Briess, Breiss aromatic malt, Weyermann CaraMunich II and Carafa III

Avery Bringing Back TROGDOR!!!!!! The Burninator

Avery Brewing echos Homestar Runner with Trogdor the Burninator.

Sam Adams Cinder Bock

Sam Adams has just released 4 beer in the brewery’s new Small Batch Series, and aren’t stopping there. Cider Bock is looks to join the crew next year. Cinder is billed as a “rauchbock” or smoke bock.

Unusual and playful this half-breed brew begins with a rush of smoky, almost savory, aromas and flavors. The distinctive campfire smokiness of a rauchbier lingers and beings to reveal the rich and velvety malt smoothness of a double bock with a notes of toffee and caramel. This roguish brew transforms from its bold start to a hearty and satisfying finish.

Speculation: Some of these brews will make another appearance in the future (they are labeled a “Batch #1.) Depending on popularity, I would assume there could be a Batch #2 release. Others released in the series include Tasman Red, Griffin’s Bow, The Vixen, and Third Voyage. Coming in 2012: Dark Depths.
