Stone/ Fat Head’s/ Bear Republic “TBA” Now Available

Yesterday, Stone Brewing released a new collaboration, dubbed “Bear Republic ⁄ Fat Head’s ⁄ Stone TBA.

Per Stone:
This particular beer pays homage to a relatively little—known beer style called Texas Brown Ale, which, strangely enough, has its roots in California. It originated as a hopped up version of a brown ale recipe, and it got pretty popular with a group of NorCal homebrewers in the early 1980s.

“These California guys were tweaking an English-style brown,” explains Matt Cole, Head Brewer of Fat Head’s Brewery. “They added some Crystal and Chocolate malts, and supercharged it with a bunch of Cascade hops to get a bigger version with more hop forward aromas and flavors.”

While delicious, these beers failed to fare well in homebrew competitions, since there was no recognized category they could be entered in. They were far too hoppy and bitter to be considered a traditional brown ale. But when a competition in Houston, TX, accepted entries for what they named the “California Dark” category, the American Homebrewers Association followed suit soon after, though they perplexingly changed the name to Texas Brown Ale.

“Bear Republic ⁄ Fat Head’s ⁄ Stone TBA” revisits this uncommon style, incorporating a few new twists. “Everyone got to add elements that they feel are special to them for that style of beer,” notes Richard Norgrove, Jr., Brewmaster at Bear Republic Brewing Co., who added brown sugar and molasses to the recipe for added complexity. “That’s what’s cool about collaborations. You get to work with two other brewers you respect, and you all have different thoughts and ideas on how to make a great beer together.”

“Collaborations give us a chance to get really creative,” adds Mitch Steele, Brewmaster at Stone Brewing Co. “We get to make a beer that we otherwise wouldn’t normally brew.”

Style: Brown Ale (Molasses, Brown Sugar)
Hops: Bravo, Brewer’s Gold, Cascade, and Columbus
Malts: Pale 2—Row, Crystal 60, Toasted Wheat, Victory, and Chocolate Malt
Availability: 12oz bottles, Draft

Oskar Blues & Sun King Create “Chaka”

Oskar Blues Sun King ChakaOskar Blues (Lyon, CO) and Sun King Brewing (Indianapolis, IN) are brewing up a new can collaboration – Chaka.  The beer will be a Belgian style ale with ingredients from both states.  Shagbark hickory syrup will be added from Indiana, and Belgian pale malt from Colorado malting.  Dave Colt from Sun King and Dave Chichura from Oskar Blues have been friends for years.  They met when Colt was working at Circle V Brewing in Indiana.

According to Hoosier Beer Geek, Chaka will be brewed this spring, debuting at the Craft Brewer’s Conference in May.   Oskar Blues & Sun King will brew an edition of Chaka.  Interestingly, Oskar Blues isn’t currently distributed in Indiana.  This collaboration would be the first time the brewery’s beer would hit the state.

Jerome & Spikes 2011 Barley Ryne (US Edition)

Terrapin BFM Spike & JeromeMeet the American edition of Spike & Jerome’s Barley Ryne.  As you may remember, last year Terrapin collaborated with Brasserie BFM in Switzerland.  The result was a sour/tart rye based barleywine aged in rum barrels and imported to the U.S. by BFM.

Above is the U.S. label, for a version of the barley wine that is a blend of 2/3 ale and 1/3 ale that has been aging in bourbon barrels at the Terrapin brewery in Athens, Georgia.  Note the name transposition to Jerome & Spikes.  Terrapin  is currently deciding when this version will be released.

Smuttynose Brews In England

David Yarrington & J.T. Thompson of Smuttynose Brewing are on their way to England.  The duo will be brewing a special batch of beer for English pub chain JD Wetherspoon.  They won’t be alone.  The collaboration will be brewed with the brewers at Wadworth Brewery.   The idea was born last summer with Thompson and Yarrington were approached by Naked Brands (an importer.)

Cool stuff: The brewhouse there is steam engine powered.

The Beer: Dubbed Murrican Mild.  It will bring together German hops, Belgian Malts, and British yeast.

The Sadness:  You’ll probably never see this Smuttynose/Wadworth beer in the states.  There are almost 800 Wetherspoon pubs throughout the UK.
