Maui & Jolly Pumpkin Releasing “Superhuman” Collaboration

Maui Sobrehuman Palena oleMaui Brewing Co (Lahaina, Maui, HI)  has just announced a new collaboration brew with Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales (Dexter, MI).  Sobrehumano Palena ‘ole will be the brewery’s first collaboration in a can.  The name is a blended Spanish-Hawaiian term for “superhuman.”

What’s the beer?
Sobrehumano Palena ‘ole is a red ale brewed with liliko’i (passionfruit) and cherries.   Each brewery will add its own unique spin – as Maui will ferment normally (arriving in cans), and Jolly Pumpkin will make it  a barrel aged sour (in bottles).

Where?
Maui will produce 4,000 cases & 80 barrels, distributed in all 11 states in which the brewery currently ships.   Ed. Note: Jolly Pumpkin most likely will not know yield until barrel blending time.

How Did These Two Find Each Other?
“John and Garrett were planning their collaborations for 2012 and because John is from Michigan and coming home for the holidays my name came up.  This whole idea came together really fast — just weeks before John’s visit.  It’s been a very challenging blend to develop — I’m super-excited about it and a little intimidated at the same time. I’ve been enchanted by Hawaii for years and it’s been great to work with everyone at MBC and get to know them.  I always enjoy collaborations but this one is something really special.”

Style: Red Ale (Maui) / Ambiguous Style (Jolly Pumpkin)  (w/ Cherries, Passionfruit)
Availability: 12 oz cans, Bottle size TBA
Arrival: June, 2012 (SAVOR)

Jester King/Mikkeller Collab: Beer Geek Rodeo

Jester King Beer Geek RodeoBeer Geek Rodeo is a peppery, coffee laden collaboration between Mikkeller and Jester King

Beer geeks and rodeos don’t often go together, but if ever there were a place where the two would meet, it would be Denmark No one from Jester King has ever been to Denmark, but our friends Mikkel and Thomas tell us the entire country is inhabited by craft beer drinking, spicy food loving Viking cowboys and cowgirls, and we think that sounds awesome. So as they say in Danish, bunden i vejret eller resten i haret, which we believe is pro-nounced “Yee-haw!” Jester King Craft Brewery is an authentic farm-house brewery in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, on the outskirts of Austin. We brew what we like, drink what we want and offer the rest to those who share our tastes.

Style: Imperial Stout (Chipotle Peppers, Coffee, Brown Sugar)
Hops: Millenium, Saaz, Cascade, Columbus
Malts: Flaked Oats, Roasted Barley, Maris Otter, Dark Crystal, Brown, Chocolate, Smoked, Pale.

Availability: 750 ml bottles
Arrival: TBA

Finch’s Threadless Ready To Ship

Finch’s Beer Co (Chicago, IL) is preparing to ship their newest beer – Threadless IPA.  This is a pretty special beer, as it’s a collaboration with Threadless T-Shirt Company.  Last year, the brewery created a hoppy American IPA for Threadless, leading them to want to can the beer and share with the world.  One problem.  Artwork was needed.  Threadless took it to the people.  169 designs were submitted to be voted on.  The above design was the clear winner.

Our Threadless/Finch collaboration IPA is a balanced experience of both perceived hoppiness and true bitterness. It pours a darker amber color and finishes with a citrus flavor, and when combined, will require this to be the last IPA you ever drink! Well, maybe, we realize you will probably drink more, but the result of this recipe clearly evolves into a very balanced IPA. The grain bill on this big pale includes melanoidin and Victory malts. We hop it up before the boil starts with some Columbus first wort hopping, then add a bunch more for bittering.

Style: IPA
Availability: 16 oz cans
Arrival: April 2012

6% ABV
