NEW RELEASE: Sierra Nevada Tumbler

A new month, and a new beer.  This one seems to be a little early for fall, but it’s welcomed none the less.  Sierra Nevada Tumbler is here, the first of the fall ales this year.

Tumbler is a brown ale that is replacing Sierra Nevada’s Anniversary Ale.  Anniversary Ale was an American IPA  first brewed in 2007 and was released late summer each year.  According to Sierra’s brewery rep, the brewery took a look  their portfolio in the wake of their 30 years of existence.  They thought it was time to change things up a bit and brew a beer that was a little less hop forward.   An offering that is more malt forward and appropriate for fall.  Thats exactly what Tumbler wants to be.  Sierra Nevada describes –

“As the nights grow cool, the leaves on the valley oaks begin to turn and fall. In honor of this yearly dance, we bring you Tumbler Autumn Brown Ale and invite you to enjoy the show. We use malt within days of roasting at the peak of its flavor to give Tumbler a gracefully smooth malt character. So pour a glass, and grab a window seat to watch as the leaves come tumbling down.”

It”s brewed with 2 hop varieties and 4 different hops

Hops: Challenger, Yakima

Malts: 2 Row Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Smoked

Yeast: Ale

Taste Expectations: Dark malt flavors.  Caramel.  Roasted grains.  Sierra wanted this accented.  Grainy, chocolate, and nuts also shine through.

Availability: 12oz/6 pks, Draft.  Seasonal Late Summer/Fall Release

5.5% ABV

Now Tapping: Brooklyn Dark Matter

Brewmaster Garrett Olliver is a genius when it comes to barrel aging beers.  Ever had a Black Ops?  You won’t forget it if you did.  Extremely good.  Another barrel aged offering by Brooklyn is popping  up on draft in Atlanta – Dark Matter.  Dark Matter is the follows Cookie Jar Porter as a part of the Brewmaster’s Reserve Series.

Dark Matter is a barrel aged American Brown Ale.  It is prudent to mention Black Ops, because Dark Matter and Black Ops have some relation.  As Garrett Oliver describes –

“In the beginning, there was Black Ops. Or perhaps not. Beer does have its mysteries. Anyhow, they say that back in 2007, a small amount of Dark Matter was created alongside Black Ops, but very few people had an opportunity to taste it. The Brooklyn Brewing Team decided that this shortage was unfortunate — plenty of Dark Matter for themselves, but not enough to share with all their friends. So last autumn they decided to recreate Dark Matter and open up the Brooklyn Barrel Room to a wider world. Brooklyn Dark Matter is a robust brown ale aged for four months in bourbon and rye whiskey barrels. Some barrels previously held Black Ops, some hosted The Manhattan Project, others came straight from the distilleries as soon as the whiskey was decanted. We’ve blended these barrels to create a beer full of caramel and chocolate flavors heightened by vanilla-like oak notes and hints of the barrels’ previous tenants. The result is a smooth, rich beer that really loves food, from fried or roasted chicken to char-grilled steak, barbecue, pork chops and even monkfish. And on some chilly evening in late winter, or perhaps the first warm night of spring, we hope that you may be tempted to believe that Dark Matter really does bind the universe together.”

Tasting – Dark Matter presents with flavors of bourbon & vanilla.  Also oak, toffee and burnt sugars.  Look for some chocolate tones too.  These are just guidelines.  Gives you flavors to look for.  Let your taste buds lose and find discover your beer.

Availability – Rare draft offerings.  Dark Matter is very limited.

Currently tapping – Taco Mac Metropolis.  The Fred has a keg also, tapping date to follow.  More kegs shipped to Atlanta area. Sightings to follow.

Lagunitas Wilco Tango Foxtrot

Last year it was 2009 Correction Ale, an American IPA with Imperial overtones.  The message? We’re all bozos on this bus… a beer aimed to help with the recession blues.  In 2010, Lagunitas was hoping to have a cheerful, positive release but by the looks of things we don’t know where we are.  I think Lagunitas hit the mark with it’s newest release — Wilco Tango Foxtrot.   “A Jobless Recovery Ale, and ode to progress (or lack thereof.) “

Take note of the underlined letters.  Feel that way lately?  Wilco Tango Foxtrot is a brown ale with a strong hop bill. As Lagunitas states – “We’re not quite in the red, or in the black.  Does that mean we’re in the brown?”  Thusly, a brown ale fits.

Tasting notes — Deceptively hoppy at first look.  Lots of fresh hop flavors.  Citrusy, floral hops come through in this brown ale.   WTF has a nice rich malty backbone all the while not being heavy.  The balance is enjoyable, and the taste, fresh.   If you liked, Victory Yakima Twilight, Stone Sublimely, or Terrapin’s newest — Capt’n Krunkles, you might want to get on board with this one.  It’s dark while still being hoppy.

From the bottle ‘”In the funky realm of things that make you go “Hmmm…” 2010 may rank way, way up there. From the curious per curiam decision of531U.S.98 in 2000, to WTC7, to the Superdome, to the Fall of the House of Lehman, to the Nobel President’s Afghan Expedition escalation, to the oxymoronic Jobless Recovery of 2010; we have been confused. So, we done the only thing we could –  we made beer — and lots of it. 6,420M cases of it to be exact. As far as we know, you drank all of it. Thank you for that, because if you had not  we would have been looking for a bailout of our own, and we haven’t heard of any breweries either needing or receiving any of those Yuan-flavored TARP dollars…although we have read that the Las Vegas adult video industry did. Nobody knows why. So, in a world that is once again the proverbial “Ball of Confusion”, craft beer alone seems to carry its own weight. It’s nice to be on the winning team and thank you for your friendship and imbibiliciousness.

Wilco Tango Foxtrot arrives this week in 22oz bomber bottles and draft offerings.  Sightings soon here, and on Twitter@AtlBeerMaster
