Find Out Why Bock Beers Feature Goats With Anchor Brewing [Video]
Anchor Brewing’s little commercial for Bock Beer, that is available now through May. Have you ever taken a second to ask yourself why bock’s usually have a goat on the label? The brewery helps you figure that one out.
Southern Tier’s Bullfighting Bock
Southern Tier is working on a bock offering – Matador.
In the ring the matador’s red cape allures the beast, and in this way our bock will tempt you with it’s rich ruby color. Both an artist and an athlete, with great agility, grace and coordination, a matador goes where most fear to tread. They are performers of life and are revered.
Some believe it was either a play on words, or a nod to astrological symbology with bock beers. Whatever the reason, we see bock beers as stylish as the matador’s “suit of lights.” As a special bock lager , our Matador is as close as you may every get to being in the ring with beast that is at once elegant and powerful. On sip of Matador will confirm this as an homage to an old world lager.

Red Brick Brewing (Atlanta, GA) is bringing a their bock out of retirement. By my best estimations, this beer last made an appearance around 2005. In 2011, the beer gets a fancy new name – “Hellava Bock” & a fancy new label.
The details haven’t been finalized, but looks like it will be shipping in the next 4-6 weeks.

Anchor Fans! Meet Anchor Bock
Bock is a strong lager first brewed in the 14th century in Einbeck, Germany. Traditionally, bocks are malty in nature using Munich and Vienna malts. Monks would even drink them while fasting during Lent because it has a lot of liquid nutrients. Basically, liquid bread.
Anchor Bock is definitely strong, darker, and maltier than Anchor’s other lager offerings. Liquid bread is a great description. This bock is brewed with 2 Row Barley Malts and Wheat Malts and fresh whole flower hops. This beer like Anchor’s many other brews is made in their all malt mash copper kettles in San Fransisco, California.
Available January – April seasonally in 12 oz/6 pks. There are also 22 oz bottles, but I haven’t spotted them yet. Also Draft offerings.
5.5% ABV
Fun Fact – You may notice on Anchor Bock’s bottle (and numerous other bottles) that there is a goat on it. As the story goes – the word “Bock” in German translates to “Billygoat.”
