Santa Needs Lovin Too

Beer Here Brewing is adding to their American offerings this winter.  Joining Dark Hops and Morke, Yule Ale (called Yulewine in Denmark) is headed stateside.  Beer Here is the result of Danish brewer Christian Skovdal Andersen’s brewing adventures beginning in 2004.  Christian and partner started Olfabrikken Brewing, which translates to “The Beer Factory.”  Before long, Christian and his partner went their separate ways, allowing him to found Beer Here Brewery.

Commercial Description:

Yulewine is big and uncompromising English style barleywine made from 100% certified organic ingredients.  When poured it will embrace you with its rum like notes from dark sugar added to the kettle.  Modest hopping takes the backseat to mouth filling malt character chased by warming alcohol.  Enjoy it at cellar temperature after a good meal now or keep it for a few years as it will improve for years to come.

Style: English Barleywine

Availability: 16.9 oz bottles

11% ABV

Mother’s Brewing’s Foggy Notion

Mothers Brewing Foggy Notion

Mother’s Brewing (Springfield, MO) has a Foggy Notion – a new barleywine. The brewery was founded in 2010, and currently has 7 beers in their young lineup.  Foggy is related to another beer, PG-13 Mother’s released this week.

PG-13 resembles its originator, Foggy Notion (Barley Wine Style Ale), in that it was made from the same mash using an old brewing technique called, parti-gyle. PG-13 also uses the same hop varieties as used in Foggy Notion.

Style: Barleywine

Draft only offering at this time

Spike & Jerome’s Ale Arriving Any Day…

Spike Jerome's Ale

[Update] – Label now available.  Beer arriving soon.

Any day now on the debut of this collaboration – Spike & Jerome’s Ale.  In February, Terrapin travelled to Jura, Switzerland and collaborated with Brasserie Franches Montagnes.  (Actually, they were already on a European beer tour.)  In the cold of winter, the two breweries created a rye based barleywine.

The barleywine — “Spike & Jerome’s Ale” is actually derived from 20% rye, 80% malted barley.   The beer has been aging in rum barrels in Switzerland.  S & J was expected by the end of June, but now any day.

Availability: 330ml swing top bottles BFM bottles (July). Draft (Late June).  Limited to 20 kegs, 300 cases of bottles.

10% ABV

Other Terrapin News:

  • Reunion Beer 2011 with Shmaltz Brewing will be brewed in July, debuts August, 2011.
  • 4th Edition of Left Hand/Terrapin Midnight Project will be brewed this July also in Athens, GA.  Peach beer!
  • Side Project #16 — Flux Capacitor slated for winter 2011. A strong ale.  Target ABV 12.1% ABV (1.21 gigawatts!) 88.8 IBUs (Miles an hour!) and full of Biff “Tannins
Also, recently the Terrapin & Heavy Seas family suffered a loss of a loved one.  A senseless tragedy that makes me sick to my stomach.  My thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

Uinta’s Anniversary Barleywine Update

Uinta Brewing celebrates their anniversary with an American barleywine.  Keeping with the impressive new labeling, the barleywine is prime for a sprucing up.  The previous artwork had a roman numeral denoting the year/vintage (as seen below.)  This beer is now available year round, & no numerals on the new label either. NOTE: Might be on the neck.  Barleywines cellar beautifully…

First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV.

Style: Barleywine
Availability: 12oz bottles, year round.

10.4% ABV

Hoppin Frog’s Naked Belgian Barleywine

Hoppin Frog Brewing’s Naked Evil BBW is starting to hit radars, but with an interesting twist.  It’s a naked version of another hard to find beer.  Naked Evil is the “pre-oak” version of the brewery’s Deliver Us From Evil… yet to be seen.  Honestly, I can’t find a single mention of Deliver Us From Evil anywhere.  Compared to the brewery’s other packaging, this label is indeed a bit “naked”.

A naked version of our Deliver Us From Evil, before aging in our traditional oak vessels. Sweet malt flavors will become smoother and rich dark fruit characters will build with time to add a wonderful complexity and depth of flavor. Fermented with both British and Belgian yeasts for a lightly spicy twist on this old-world beer style.

Availability: 22oz bombers. Where? TBD
