Interesting note by looking at the keg collar: Double Thumper Imperial IPA is pictured. Not sure if they are still proceeding with that name (i.e. Shipyard Double Thumper, that doesn’t seem to be trademarked.)

Atlanta’s Hop City Expanding, Adding 60 Tap Growler Station
Atlanta’s Hop City Craft Beer & Wine, ranked 12th best beer retailer in the world on RateBeer.com (8th overall the U.S.) has some pretty big news. Owner Kraig Torres has just inked a deal that will put a second store in Birmingham, Alabama. (A place starving for good beer!)
We have a large customer base from Birmingham who drive two-and-half hours to our store, so Alabama was a no brainer! says Kraig Torres
The new location will span about 5,500 square feet and open in March at Pepper Place in Birmingham.
And in other big Hop City News:
The current store in Atlanta, Georgia – sells 1,800 different beers, 1,000 wines, and home brewing supplies. Earlier this year, Hop City added a 16 tap growler wall once they became allowable in Georgia. Growler lovers, get ready for this. On January 7th, Hop City will open a growler wall expansion – bringing the total to 60 taps. The most in the southeast. Kraig recently bought the empty store adjacent to the shop. The annex will have the tap wall, and a new temperature controlled beer cellar, full of goodies they will release throughout the year.
Ipswich Ales is now available for the first time in Georgia. Mercury Brewing has been brewing the Ipswich lineup on Boston’s North Shore since 1991, one of the oldest in New England.
The beers are initially only available at metro area Total Wines. 3 beers come with the initial launch:
Oatmeal Stout, 7% ABV, Deep, rich, and malty with hints of chocolate and coffee. It’s what espresso would be if it had the gumption to be beer. We use two different hop additions, specially selected crystal malts, roasted barley, and oatmeal to give it a soft and silky mouth feel. Makes a great dessert. Or meal. Year round.
Original Ale – English Pale Ale, 5.4% ABV. Named one of the World’s Ten Best Beers by Wine Spectator Magazine, Ipswich Ale has satisfied discerning craft beer drinkers since 1991. A North Shore classic, Ipswich Ale is a medium-bodied, unfiltered English style pale ale with subtle hoppiness and a smooth malty flavor. Year round.
Dark Ale – English Brown Ale, 6.3% ABV.
No draft, or 12 oz bottles have arrived at this time. Recently, Clown Shoes Beers showed up at Total Wine also, the only place in the state.
Clown Shoes Brewing (Ipswich, MA) has quietly entered into Georgia. Distribution is limited – right now the only retailers carrying it are metro area Total Wines. Below are list of brands that are either in stock, or slated to be in stock in the future. Quality Wines is the distributor.
Clementine (In stock)
Clementine is Clown Shoes Beer’s Belgian style White Ale. Light-bodied and crisp, this is a terrific White Ale with plenty of zest! Hazy in appearance and healthily carbonated, it utilizes Chambly yeast to energetically shape its wheat malt base. Incorporated in the brewing process is Clementine, sweet orange peel, a hint of Coriander, and Summit hops.
Brown Angel
Brown Angel was designed to have three distinct levels: a dark brown backbone with notes of chocolate and coffee resulting from the use of 1500 pounds of Maris Otter malt, aggressive American hops (Amarillo and Columbus) provide bitterness and some citrus, while a more delicate floral finish is achieved from the use of the classic English hop, East Kent Goldings. This is NOT your old school brown, but rather a sexy American interpretation. At 40IBUs and 7% Alcohol it goes down sneaky fast.
Hoppy Feet (In stock)
Hoppy Feet has been lovingly crafted by combining Premium malt with lots of Amarillo and Columbus Hops. Grapefruit and Pine are balanced on the nose and on the palate by a nutty, dark chocolate, roasted backbone.
Tramp Stamp
Like a stamp on a tramp, this beer is about not so subtle seduction. Soft but complex malts, Chambly yeast, sweet orange peel, Columbus, Amarillo, and Centennial hops have merged to create a bodacious Belgian IPA.
Muffin Top
Eagle Claw Fist
Eagle Claw Fist utilizes the same Chico yeast that shaped Hoppy Feet and Brown Angel. Canadian Two Row, English Crystal, and a little English Black Patent malt provide a sweet, balanced backbone. Simcoe, Centennial, and Citra work together to create a unique hop assault, with an intense bitterness that manages to leave your palate in one piece and is harmonized by the flavors of tropical fruits and flowers. The finish is dry.
Lubrication
Lube? Hey, get your mind out of the gutter. Social lubrication, people coming together to unwind, is what we are talking about. This American Black Ale has a dark body, medium bitterness, balanced with West Coast hops and sweet orange peel. 1 pint, 6 fl.oz. Alc.6%
Blaecorn Unidragon
A big roasty Russian Imperial Stout for drinking now, or later. (BSJ description)
The Porter Beer Bar in Atlanta, GA is ranked 4th best beer bars in the world according to RateBeer.com. Last Saturday, Nick & Molly (founders of The Porter) celebrated in true beer fashion with the drinkers of Atlanta & beyond. The first 100 in received a special growler that The Porter had made as a thank you gift. The beer list – amazing. Below are some pictures from the day. (I admit, after a couple of beers we got distracted…) Cheers to 3 years!
Suck it Athens, Georgia. Atlanta finally gets growlers. Today Hop City becomes the first place to sell growlers, and the people love it. It looked like an iPhone launch for beer geeks.
If you don’t know about growlers, its like this. $5 gets you a glass jug in which you pour draft beer into. It’s then capped, and you open it within a few days & drink it. Fresh from the tap to your house. Rinse it. Take the growler back & get it filled again..
Growlers are quite popular in other parts of the U.S. but those pesky antiquated state laws get in the way. Now you can. Hop City sells the growlers for $5 dollars plus the price of the beer. There are 16 taps to choose from, rotating constantly. Today’s first 16 included Wild Heaven’s Ode To Mercy & Invocation, Jailhouse Breakout Stout, Terrapin Moo Hoo & Rye Squared, Sweetwater Happy Ending 2010 & IPA, Red Brick 16th Anniversary, Stillwater, New Belgium 10-10-10 & Oh La La, Duvel Green, Lost Abbey Red Barn, Victory Braumeister Stout, Brooklyn Lager, & Southern Tier 2X IPA.
Red Brick blew first and was replaced by French Broad Anvil Porter. 5pm found a line out the door. Everyone was patient, especially as the new system gets polished up. Yours truly was the first in Atlanta history to get a growler. I’m drunkenly proud. The tap handles will constantly change as another beer runs out, so check the list everyday.
Sunday sales and growlers in the same week. Told ya Santa Claus was an alcoholic.
