Lost Abbey + Guns n’ Roses = Track #9

A new month, and another Lost Abbey Ultimate Box Set Release. September’s release pays tribute to the Guns n’ Roses cover of Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door. Each of these rare releases in a blend of even more rare Lost Abbey beers. For Track #9, the brewery took some Cuvee de Tomme that wasn’t ready in time for the 2011 release and added currants, plus extra brettanomyces yeast. (The funky stuff.)

Left to nature’s devices, the currants married into the raisin and cherry already present in the beer and created a full-bodied fruit intensity we hadn’t quite expected. Liking what we tasted, we decided to bump the melange with an addition of Brettanomyces for a little extra oomph. The results are a unique blend that delivers a great combination of plummy fruits, round malts and just enough funk to remind you Brett’s in the house and doing her thing.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Currants, Barrel Aged)
Availability: 12.7 oz bottles. Brewery release only. To be consumed on premise only.
Arrival: September 15, 2012

The Next Avery Barrel Aged: Odio Equum

Avery Odio Equum

Avery Brewing’s Barrel Aged Series will soon find a new member – Odio Equum. Number 13 in the series, Odio Equum sour ale is brewed with raspberries and aged in wine barrels. Odio Equum translates to “Despite the horse”, perhaps a backhanded reference to “horse blanket” flavors that brettanomyces yeast can give to beer.

Such a strong and ugly word, but unfortunately true. Our vintner friend just doesn’t appreciate the depth and character of the aromas and flavors that Brettanomyces creates like we do. Like you do. But hte dude has some seriously fine Cabernet Sauvignon barrels that he shared with us to help create this wonderous sour ale. Our lucky #13 in this series. Aged for 12 months in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Raspberries, Wine Barrel Aged)
Availability: 12 oz bottles. 465 cases produced
Arrival: To be bottled in September, 2012

7.89% ABV

Brewery Vivant & New Belgium Collaborate on “Bretta”

Brewery Vivant Bretta Ale

New Belgium enters the state of Michigan on August 27, 2012. To celebrate the occasion, NB has worked up a collaboration with Brewery Vivant in Grand Rapids. Escoffier Bretta Ale is a celebration of food & beer.

When you put two Lion Fish in a bowl, they fight. When you put to brewers at the same table, the drink beer and become friends. This is how the collaboration came together between our two breweries. With our love of Belgian inspired beer, great food, and running our companies in a sustainable manner, we had a lot to talk about. Next thing you know, we were making plans to brew a beer together.

Style: American Wild Ale
Availability: 22 oz bombers. Brewery Vivant distro network
Arrival: September, 2012

9.5% ABV

Look! Goose’s Madame Rose Is Bottled

This one of my personal favorites. I basically have to trade babies on the black market to even get a bottle. Goose Island just bottled Madame Rose, the brewery’s Belgian style brown ale.  Madame is brewed with sour cherries, and aged in wine barrels. It’s a funky, fun, complex beer. Plus it gives you a one-up for those wine snobs in your life. Brian Taylor from GI is seen here showing the Madame some love.

Goose Island will be announcing a release date soon.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Cherries, Wine Barrel Aged)

Lost Abbey Gives Birth To The Devil with Track 7

It’s July which means time for another Lost Abbey Ultimate Box Set Release. Track 7 is inspired by INXS’s 1988 hit “The Devil Inside.” So what beer matches this little bundle of evil? A remix of the brewery’s Veritas 006, a wild ale.  The crew took that beer, and added raspberries, cherries and Mandarin orange zest. This baby arrives July 21, 2012. Sold only at the brewery, for consumption on site only.

It is a remix of our classic Veritas 006 aka sangria. We have raspberry and cherry providing the bulk of the fruit texture over a sour yellow base beer. To this we also added some orange peel and freshly zested mandarin orange zest as well. The beer finishes with a nice tannic finish and is truly a refreshing riff on a Lost Abbey classic.

Style: American Wild Ale (w/ Raspberries, Cherries, Orange Zest, Oak Aged)
Availability: 12.7 oz bottles. Brewery only

8.12% ABV
