SweetWater’s Spring Seasonal “Road Trip” Returns To Shelves (PR)

Limited-time pilsner rolls out in six-packs, Tackle Boxes and on draft taps this week

ATLANTA (March 2013) — Just in time for some warmer weather, SweetWater Brewing Company is bringing back their fiery pilsner style ale — Road Trip. This full-flavored beverage is a part of the brewery’s Catch and Releaseseasonal lineup, featured for a limited-time every March through May.

Made from Pilsner and Vienna malts and brewed with Cascade, Sterling and US Golding hops, Road Trip finishes with hints of citrus and herbal hoppy notes ringing in at 5.2% alcohol by volume. Unique for most pilsners, Road Trip is actually fermented at warmer ale temperatures giving it fuller flavor, capped with an intense, spicy hop finish.

“To me the Road Trip is a perfect springtime beer, great for outdoor activities like sitting by the pool or even mowing the lawn,” says SweetWater’s head brewer Nick Nock. “This is our version of a pilsner so it has a light, crisp body with a great hop character, which gives it a zing of spiciness.

Six-packs of Road Trip will begin stocking up in coolers across the Southeast, while kegs roll out on draft at participating retailers and accounts the week of March 11. Folks will also find Road Trip making a debut in SweetWater’s Tackle Box Variety 12-pack later in the month of March.

Get it while the gettin’s good, because on this Road Trip, nobody rides for free!

Flying Dog Creates New Beer Exclusively For 2013 Craft Brewers Conference (PR)

FREDERICK, MD — What brings us together, as brethren of craft beer, is an innate bitterness that runs through our veins, creating a thirst that can only be quenched by an all-out assault on our taste buds and an intense love of the craft.

Brewed exclusively for the 2013 Craft Brewers Conference (and a collaborative project with Reyes Beverage Group), Bloodline is an intesnely-hopped IPA brewed with Blood Orange peel and juice.

According to our Brewmaster Matt Brophy, “The result is a flavor profile that harnessed the best aspects of both the hops (Warrior, Citra, and Nelson Sauvin) and the citrus,” Brewmaster Matt Brophy said. “We’re all very fond of hop-based citrus aromas, so experimenting with actual citrus was a natural extension of that.”

Bloodline will be available on draft only during the Craft Brewers Conference in Washington, DC starting March 26.

Mother Earth Brewing and Noda Brewing to Brew Collaboration Beer for NC Beer Month (PR)

Just in time for North Carolina craft beer month, Mother Earth Brewing and NoDa Brewing Company will release Word to Your Mother. The first collaboration beer for both breweries, the goal was to bring together two North Carolina based breweries to create a fantastic beverage.

Having long been a fan of his beer, Mother Earth Brewmaster, Josh Brewer, sought out Chad Henderson, Head Brewer at NoDa, and proposed collaboration. Henderson jumped at the offer. After months of emails, phone calls, and pilot batch brews, the two Brewmasters settled on Word to Your Mother, a Red Saison infused with apricots and cardamom.  They both love a Saison, but wanted to put their own fresh spin on the style. Word to Your Mother will offer a dry finish and spicy fruit notes and weigh in at around 5.9% ABV.

As with many collaboration beers, Brewer and Henderson will brew at each other’s breweries, but they have decided to take it one step further. A full capacity batch will be brewed on each system using the Brewmaster’s own unique method to infuse the apricots. Then 4 barrels of each batch will be transferred to the other brewery in transportable fermenters and mixed with the batch brewed there to create a distinct final blend.

Word to Your Mother will launch April 1 and be offered as a draft only beer. It will be distributed in North Carolina in each of the breweries’ respective territories.

Mother Earth Brewing is a 20 barrel brewery located in Kinston, NC. It opened its doors in 2009 and distributes to North Carolina, Washington DC, and Georgia.  Mother Earth’s Dark Cloud Munich Dunkel lager received a bronze medal at the 2012 GABF and is also the first production brewery in the US to achieve LEED Gold certification.

NoDa Brewing Company is a 15 barrel brewery located in Charlotte, NC. It opened its doors in 2011. NoDa Brewing  distributes in North Carolina and is very well known for its Coco Loco, a 2012 GABF silver medal winning porter infused with organic coconut, as well as a wide variety of assorted styles introduced in their rotating yearly lineup.

Brewers Association Announces 2013 Beer Style Guidelines (PR)

Boulder, CO – March 4, 2013–The Brewers Association (BA), the not-for-profit trade group dedicated to promoting and protecting America’s small and independent craft brewers, released its 2013 Beer Style Guidelines. Updated annually, this year’s version defines 142 styles of beer, up from 140 in 2012.

Compiling the guidelines annually is a collaborative effort, and the 2013 version incorporates more than 100 suggestions from U.S. and international beer judges and experts, brewers and beer lovers. This year, Adambier and Grätzer styles were added for the first time. Both are historic pre-Reinheitsgebot styles that are making a slow revival among U.S. and international brewers. Adambier and Grätzer are historically smoky ales, with the former thriving in and around Dortmund, Germany, and the latter brewed primarily in Poland.

Changes were also made to the guidelines for American wheat ale, reflecting a growing trend in the craft brewing and homebrewing communities by which all-wheat grists are used in the brewing process.

As consumers and beer judges generally use their senses of sight and smell before they taste a beer, the descriptive text for virtually every listed beer style has been updated and reorganized to reflect the order of the beer sensory experience. The guidelines now focus first on appearance, aroma, flavor and finish, in that order. They also include vital statistics on each of the 142 styles including ranges for: original gravity/plato; apparent extract/final gravity; alcohol by weight/volume; bitterness and color.

“These guidelines are first and foremost an educational tool, but they also help to illustrate the United States’ role as a leading beer nation,” said Charlie Papazian, president of the Brewers Association. “The Brewers Association toasts America’s small and independent brewers, including homebrewing enthusiasts, who continue to push the evolution of style guidelines with their innovative brewing and ingredients.”

Since 1979, the BA has provided beer style descriptions as a reference for brewers and beer competition organizers. The beer style guidelines developed by the BA use sources from the commercial brewing industry, beer analyses and consultations with beer industry experts and knowledgeable beer enthusiasts as resources for information. Much of the early work was based on the assistance and contributions of beer journalist Michael Jackson and Fred Eckhardt. The guidelines are used in some of the world’s most prestigious beer competitions, including the Great American Beer Festival® and the World Beer Cup®.

Wynkoop Announces Belgorado (PR)

Denver, Colorado) — Wynkoop Brewing Company is now self distributing its fourth hand-canned craft beer — Belgorado Belgian-Style India Pale Ale — in the Denver area.

The small-batch, Belgium-meets-Colorado beer combines the wonders of two of the world’s best beer cultures with Wynkoop’s artisan brewing and farm-to-fermenter thinking.

A creation of Wynkoop head brewer Andy Brown, Belgorado has been a draft-only seasonal beer since its debut in the fall of 2010. The beer won a 2011 Great American Beer Festival bronze medal in the festival’s Experimental Beer category.

Lusciously hopped but artfully balanced, Belgorado is a golden beer rich with pale malt flavors, layers of hops from start to finish, and spice notes. It is 6.7% ABV and has about 45 IBUs.

The year-round beer features Colorado terroir in every sip.

Belgorado is made with whole-leaf and pelletized hops from Misty Mountain Hop Farm, a pioneering little hop farm in Olathe, CO. The farm is now in its fourth year and grows 16 acres of hops.

Belgorado’s main ingredient is a Belgian-style malted barley from Colorado Malting Company, a small, family owned farm and specialty maltster in Alamosa, CO. Now in its third year, Colorado Malting grows its own barley and malts its Belgian-style malt in a slow, retro-minded fashion.

“We use warm moist air instead of dry heat,” says Jason Cody, company president, “and slowly malt the barley for 7-8 days instead of the usual 3 or 4. That process creates a more plump, fully modified grain with more sugar. It’s 100% natural, made the same way Europeans malted barley 500 years ago.”

These home-state ingredients are skillfully blended by Brown and his staff, then fermented with a Belgian yeast.

“My goal was a simple recipe that allows the qualities of our native-grown ingredients to shine through,” Brown says. “But with a Belgian yeast strain that adds complexity and joins with the spiciness of the hops.”

“The beer is a nod to the drinkability of a Belgian pale ale, a trait I really love,” Brown adds. “But with our Colorado-grown hops and their lemony tartness, Belgorado gets extra layers of flavor without being overly bitter.”

The beer is handcrafted and handcanned at Wynkoop Brewing Company on a table-top canning machine from Cask Brewing Systems. It’s now available in the Denver area in fourpacks of 12-ounce cans, with a suggested retail price of $7.49/fourpack.

The beer’s small-farm malts and hops make it an especially valuable beer to the local farmers producing Belgorado’s signature ingredients.

“Wynkoop,” says Robert Munger of Misty Mountain Hop Farm, “is an iconic Colorado brewery and one of Denver’s best. We’re very excited to be working with such a historic brewery.”

“This Belgorado project is great for our family business,” Cody says. “Wynkoop is really supporting the local economy with this beer and it’s very helpful to us.”
