A Silver Medal for Maui La Perouse White

LAHAINA, MAUI, HI – 07 October 2011 – Maui Brewing Co. (MBC) is proud to announce that their La Perouse White won a silver medal in the Belgian-style Witbier category (Category #67) against 52 other entries at this year’s Great American Beer Festival (GABF). This beer was developed and brewed by Kim Lutz, Lead Brewer, BrewPub Operations at MBC’s Kahana location.

The awards were announced on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the Denver Convention Center during the 30th annual Great American Beer Festival. GABF is the largest commercial beer competition in the world.  This year’s competition topped last year’s entries by 11 percent, with 3930 beers vying for medals.  248 medals were awarded

in total, judged by 167 judges from nine countries. Entries were received from 526 breweries from 48 states plus Puerto Rico.

“I was ecstatic to hear ‘La Perouse’ over the speakers! We had, just two days earlier, announced this beer was to be our next limited release can for Spring 2012. I’m very proud of Kim in her efforts to perfect this lovely representation of Belgian Witbier brewed with local fruit,” commented Garrett Marrero.

Maui Brewing Co. is one of only two truly local Hawaiian breweries, brewing and packaging 100% of product in the state. Maui Brewing Co. and Hawaii Nui (on the Big Island) are very proud to be wholly produced in Hawaii. Maui Brewing Co. has been recognized as Hawaii’s #1 craft beer since 2005 and the company has a strong commitment to the local economy, and the environment. MBC craft beers are packaged with the most eco-friendly materials. Although cans and bottles are both recyclable, bottles still break and pose a risk at beaches. The cans are manufactured on Oahu and designed by local Maui artists; they have the added bonus of protecting the beer in the best possible manner, protecting the product from both light and oxygen damage which can seriously compromise the taste. Plastic rings are dangerous to marine life and therefore, a unique, recyclable plastic carrying device is used to hold the products. The spent grain from beer production is donated to local ranchers for cattle feed and composting. Maui Brewing Co. is also very active in several local Hawaii charities.

Founder Garrett Marrero and his wife, Melanie, operate a 7-barrel brewpub at the Kahana location as well as a 25-barrel production brewery and canning facility in Lahaina.  Maui Brewing Co. is a truly local beer as 100% of their products are made in Hawaii.

Press Release: Odell Brewing Unleashes the Friek

Odell Brewing Unleashes the Friek

Fort Collins, CO. — On October 24, 2011, Odell Brewing will celebrate the return of Friek, its Framboise/Kriek inspired sour ale and the Gold Medal winner for Wood and Barrel Aged Sour Beers at this year’s Great American Beer Festival®.

“I think this beer best represents our collaborative culture,” said Brendan McGivney, head of production at Odell Brewing. “I cannot think of a beer that had as many hands involved in the process as this one from raspberry picking and cherry squishing to yeast and bug propagation, barrel handling, and 750 ml bottling.”

Friek, an adaptation of a Lambic style ale, is aged in oak barrels with cherries grown on Colorado’s western slope and blended with raspberries hand-picked in Fort Collins, CO. The beer blends a slight cherry tartness with a fresh raspberry finish for a delightfully crisp and bright flavor. Wild yeasts, lactobacillus, and pediococcus create a sour element that enhances the fruit and evolves over time.

Bottled in 750 ml cork and cage finished Champagne style bottles, Friek will be available in limited quantities throughout the brewery’s ten state distribution region.

Odell Brewing will celebrate the return of the beer and its recent medal with a “FRIEK OUT” bash in the brewery’s tap room on October 29th. Guests are encouraged to don their Friekiest and enjoy samples of the beer, local food, and live music.

Founded in 1989, Odell Brewing was started by Doug Odell, his wife Wynne, and his sister Corkie. Twenty-one years later, the culture of family and collaboration still thrives fostering a brewery full of beer-centric people. It is this passion for beer that inspires Odell Brewing to create quality, hand-crafted, innovative brews. In 2010 the brewery completed its fourth expansion, adding a wood-aging cellar, a 750 ml bottling line, and a 76 kilowatt photovoltaic system capable of providing 25% of the brewery’s peak energy demand. As a regional craft brewery, Odell Brewing is committed to serving the communities in which it distributes by sourcing local raw materials, and through its charitable giving program known as Odell Outreach. Odell Brewing was recently named a “Top Company of 2010” by ColoradoBiz Magazine and is an award winning brewery, nationally and internationally: 2011 Great American Beer Festival® – gold medal for Friek. 2010 North American Beer Awards — gold medal for Woodcut No. 3. 2009 BrewNZ Awards — gold for 5 Barrel Pale Ale. 2008 World Beer Cup® — gold for IPA. 2007 Great American

SweetWater Releases Ghoulash, Festive

SWEETWATER BREAKS OUT THE GHOULASH AND BRINGS BACK THE FESTIVE

Atlanta-Based Brewery Debuts New Dank Tank Creation Ghoulash and Rekindles the Festive Ale

ATLANTA — The cupboards were full of odds and ends at SweetWater Brewery, so the brewers whipped up SweetWater’s latest and great concoction. Ghoulash, the newest creation in the Dank Tank series of rarely released randomness, arrives this month straight from the dark side of their soul. Ok, it’s really not that scary, more so an experimental black IPA filled with everything but the kitchen sink.  Don’t like living on the dark side with El Danko?, warm up with the return of Festive Ale, perfect for a breaking out those sweaters, checking out some leaves, or curing the “family get-together” hangover — hey, the holidays can be tough.

Ghoulash: A brew so big and black, and full of fun even the creators have to warn, “We don’t know what style it is either. Enjoy and good luck!” The story behind the brew is just as random as the ingredients that make it: “Alone and cold on a frigid fall night, the evil Dr. Dank’s stomach rumbled. It has been days since devouring the last of his trannies and platypuses. Desperate, he wandered into his kitchen only to find a 3-eyed rat, yellow toenails, and an old bean burrito. Always resourceful, Dr. Dank remembered his great, great, bouffalata, granny goose’s Ghoulash recipe.

Try as he might, he couldn’t get it right, so he dumped everything he could find from the fridge and cupboard into one giant boiling brew, resulting in this stew of 2-row, black wheat, munich malt and a 14-hop variety asplifidation of Whillamette, Galena, Mt. Hood, Nugget, Perle, Aroma, Bobek, Aurora, Styrian, Golding, Magnum, Columbus, Summit, Millennium, and Crystal. Sloppy seconds never tasted so ghood!”

Hurry! This brew will be around only as long as the candy at the bottom of your pillowcase.

Festive Ale: We double dog dare you! Festive Ale is back, and this returning favorite is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling all season long. This high octane 8.5% ABV ale is a full-bodied brew with Centennial and Golding hops and is capped with a dose of cinnamon and mace. But don’t wait to enjoy this one! Just like holidays, it comes around once a year and will be only be available until late December. The Festive Ale is available on draft with the familiar stocking covering SweetWater’s rainbow trout tap handle, in 22oz wax sealed bottles, and in six packs of 12 oz. bottles

Karl Strass Two Tortugas Belgian Quad Wins At GABF

Karl Strauss Two Tortugas Belgian Quad Wins Big at GABF!

San Diego, CA — October 4, 2011—This past weekend, Karl Strauss Brewing Company participated in the 30th annual Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver, Colorado and won a Bronze Medal for its upcoming Holiday Ale release, Two Tortugas Belgian Quad. The Holiday Ale competed in the Belgian-style Abbey Ale category and beat out 73 other entries. Two Tortugas was the only Belgian-style Quadruple Ale to medal in the Belgian-style Abbey category, which also included Belgian Dubbels and Tripels.

Two Tortugas is the second installment of the Company’s 12 Days of Christmas holiday series, naming each beer with a San Diego twist. After several test batches, the brewers landed on a recipe that showcases dark fruit flavors and a spicy Belgian yeast character. The winter warmer finishes smooth at 11.1% ABV, making it an ideal beer to enjoy this season, or lay down and enjoy for years to come. “We wanted to brew a big, complex Belgian beer that will continue to develop and change over time,” said Karl Strauss Head Brewer, Matt Johnson. “Right now the beer is very malty with a definite warming character. Over time, the spiciness will become more prevalent and the caramel malt flavors will evolve into dark fruit flavors like raisins and plums.” The Holiday ale will be available to the public in mid-November, with a preview tasting at the “Reverse Tap Takeover” LA Beer Week event on October 13, 2011.

The winners were announced during the Members-Only session of the GABF at the Denver Convention Center. The GABF is the world’s largest beer competition, with more than 3,930 beers entered from 526 breweries in 48 states. Karl Strauss was one of 466 breweries pouring their beer to more than 49,000 festival attendees. In addition to attending the festival, Matt Johnson judged five categories in the competition that the company did not enter. “After going through the judging process, this win means even more,” says Matt. “The judging is completely blind and each judge really takes the process very seriously. To win in a category with so many entries and so many rounds of judging, feels like a huge accomplishment.” The GABF winners were selected by an international panel of 167 beer judges from 11 countries. Judges critiqued 83 beer categories covering 134 beer styles, choosing the best commercial examples to represent each style.

San Diego may not top the list for birdwatchers but it certainly tops the list for beer-drinkers. And while you’re more likely to spot a Sea Turtle than a Turtle Dove, tracking down a world class beer is easy. Two Tortugas is the 2nd addition to our less than literal “Twelve Days” series of holiday ales. This Belgian-inspired Quadruple Ale has a delicate union of toffee, dark fruits, and warming spices that will continue to develop with age. Raise a glass to 2011 or save a bottle for 2021, this turtle’s got legs.
