What’s The Impact Of Growlers? Ask Wild Heaven

I had a discussion today with Nick Purdy of Wild Heaven Craft Beers (Avondale Estates, Georgia.)  The brewery recently reviewed their 2012 draft sales to date and found an interesting number.   24% of their total 2012 draft sales have come from Georgia’s 18 growler accounts.  Georgia figured out just over a year ago that growlers are legal for sale in off premise accounts NOT selling liquor.  Since then, there are 18 places around Atlanta to purchase growlers, with at least 3 more in planning.

Nearly 1/4 of the total sales of a small brewery comes from draft beer sold in glass jugs to go.  Something to ponder.

BOOK: “Beyond The Pale” The Story Of Sierra Nevada Arrives In Oct

Ken Grossman, Founder of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co, is busy brewing beer and building breweries.  What you might not know, is that he has a book coming out soon too. Beyond The Pale will be released on October 16, 2012.

Beyond the Pale chronicles Ken Grossman’s journey from hobbyist homebrewer to owner of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., one of the most successful craft breweries in the United States. From youthful adventures to pioneering craft brewer, Ken Grossman shares the trials and tribulations of building a brewery that produces more than 800,000 barrels of beer a year while maintaining its commitment to using the finest ingredients available. Since Grossman founded Sierra Nevada in 1980, part of a growing beer revolution in America, critics have proclaimed his beer to be “among the best brewed anywhere in the world.”

Beyond The Pale will be available in both Kindle and hardback editions.  Pre-order now, and it will set up back a mere $16 or less.  [Amazon]

Lagunita’s Chicago Location: Movie Stars & Beer?

So last night, Tony Magee of Lagunitas Brewing announced via Twitter that he will be building a second location in his home of Chicago, Illinois.  Apparently the costs to ship the beer from Petaluma across the country is pretty much the same as it would be to build a location closer to the east coast.

The new location is pretty interesting.  In a past life, it used to be the Ryerson Steel Plant.   More recently, the area was converted to Cinespace Studios (Seen above), one of the largest sound stages outside of Hollywood, California.  That’s were shows like Kelsey Grammar’s “Boss” and “The Playboy Club” were/are being filmed.  Magee has leased space at the sound stage location.

Perhaps you’ll bump into some celebrities at the new location in the future?  Below is a look at the new spot from Google Maps.  Click the link and kill some time at work.  Maybe even take in some street views of Chi Town without all the gunfire.

There Are Rare Brooklyn “Ghost” Bottles

Ghost Bottle Brooklyn RadiusI’m sure by now you’ve figured out there are some rare bottles of beer in this world.  The above is no exception.  This “Ghost Bottle” from Brooklyn is a rare treat if you can find it.  These Ghost Bottles are 100% bottle conditioned (extra yeast/sugar added to bottle before corking/capping.) The brewery brings them out for dinners, & special tastings.  They are never for commercial sale.  The last Ghost night was in January.  Maybe you’ll see some more of this special Bottle conditioned Radius?  Maybe you won’t.  Total tease, right?

Where’s The Good Beer In A Fancy Restaurant?

My friend Nathan Berrong (@NathanBerrong) makes a great point in his recent article for CNN’s Eatocracy.  Where is the nice beer to go along with my nice meal?  A couple of weekends ago, I was in Charlotte, North Carolina for this massive Stone Brewing Co tap takeover at Taco Mac South Park.  A few of us, including Greg Koch (one of the brewery’s founders) walked across the street to the upscale, fancy pants steakhouse.  We are beer people of course, and from out of town, so we are looking for something new & local to drink.  They barely had 2 beers to rub together to make a beer list.  Koch of course isn’t shy and voiced his opinion on that situation-

Bowtied waiters & too much marble is no excuse for an entirely mediocre & unenlightened beer list.

The absolute LAST thing I want to be called is a beer snob.  However, I’m lucky enough to be able to make beer my life, so I get to drink some of the world’s best on a daily basis.  I’m always looking for a new beer to try, or something good to pair with my meal.  Berrong brings up a great point in his article, highlighted in the quote below:

I’m baffled when I go into a nice restaurant and the beer list mirrors the offerings of the convenience store down the street. The lack of consistency bothers me the most. A restaurant is too good to serve Sutter Home yet Budweiser and Heineken have their place on the menu?

Pretty true statement.  If I’m dropping $100 plus on a steak, why can I have a world glass beer list to compliment? Maybe that’s just the snot in me.  Check out Nathan’s thoughts on it.  Makes sense to me.  [Eatocracy]
