Victory Brewing Announces Headwaters Pale

Victory Brewing is set to release an anniversary beer in 2011.  This release celebrates the brewery, the neighbors and friends of their home city Downingtown, Pennsylvania, and Brandywine creek for which the water for brewing flows – this beer debuts February 15th, 2011.

From The Victory Beer Blog:
Reflecting over the years as we approach our 15th anniversary here at Victory, we can’t help but be struck by the realization that Downingtown has made a great home for Victory. From the enthusiastic throngs that crowd our brewpub to enjoy our creative, flavorful beers and cuisine to the natural charms of the area, we are blessed with good fortune. As the active community contributor we’ve been over those years, we recognize our opportunity to both utilize and protect these assets. Chief among those assets is the pure water we receive from the East Branch of the Brandywine Creek that begins its journey to us just under 14 miles from where we brew with it. We’ll be celebrating this water (insert your lite beer joke here) with our anniversary beer, Headwaters Pale Ale, due to be released February 15, 2011. Now, considering that beer is the product of four simple ingredients and the three other than water rely on water for their existence, we’ve had a fair amount of latitude in paying homage to water in our beer. So, we’ve played all of our cards deftly, bringing the hops, malt and yeast in harmony, with our great local water as the conductor in Headwaters Pale Ale.

It is unclear currently how far this beer will travel, but early talk is that it will reach all markets where Victory beer is sold.

Ships: Late February 2011

Victory Helios Recall

Victory Brewing Company released a statement today about a recall of “Helios” ale.  No, the recall is not for something deadly like what has been popping up in lettuce and eggs.  It’s for over carbonation.  As Victory states “A flaw in the bottle conditioning process.”  The brewery tweeted this morning – “Attention friends who are holding bottles of Helios Ale bottled before 2010: Please dispose of them ASAP”  also linking their blog with the full details.  Read on for full details of the recall.

Victory/Dogfish/Stone Collaboration “Saison du BUFF” Arrives!

I’ve been wondering which edition of this beer would reach Atlanta first.  This beer is a collaboration between Victory, Stone, and Dogfish Head Brewing .  Each brewery collaborated on this beer at Stone in California, and took the recipe home to brew and label under their own packaging.  This Victory Brewing edition has arrived first.  Still working on verifying if the Dogfish and Stone editions will hit the city.   Read more for the whole story.

Read on for full details.

From the Victory Blog:

“We are sad to announce that we have some Helios Ale that is over-carbonated.  The batches that are affected by this recall include the bottling dates of October 26 and December 10, 2009.  Testing conducted today on bottles from those dates yielded definitive results. Therefore, this recall has been initiated to address a flaw in the bottle conditioning process that has significantly over carbonated the beer, with resultant pressure in bottle exceeding the bottle’s burst rating.  There is nothing unsafe about the Helios Ale itself, but there is danger of exploding bottles.  There have been confirmed reports of bottles exploding. These reports include bottles sitting still, not being agitated, and have been received by us within the last 48 hrs.

This is an obvious safety hazard we wish to mitigate.

All products from 2010 are properly carbonated and pose no risk.

What to Do If You Have Bottles From These Recalled Bottling Runs:

Minimize the handling of the beer from where it currently sits to where you can safely open it.  The safest solution is to gently open the bottles over a sink.  If it gushes out, that would be a result of the over carbonation.  If it doesn’t, enjoy the beer, as any extra CO2 may be enjoyable on the palate.

We  certainly want to give you value for any Helios Ale that you purchased and were not able to enjoy due to this over-carbonation issue. If you need to make a claim for replacement value, please do so here.

How Do You Tell The Date That A Helios Ale Was Bottled On?

In the left side of the front label you will find white letters that were laser etched at bottling stating “BOTTLED ON: ____” The over-carbonated bottles are from dates October 26, 2009 and December 10, 2009 and they would appear like such:

Victory Brewing makes some great beers.  We are all human and sometimes make mistakes.  I have to applaud Victory for keeping quality and safety in their minds at all times.

Victory/Dogfish/Stone Collaboration “Saison du BUFF” Arrives!

I’ve been wondering which edition of this beer would reach Atlanta first.  This beer is a collaboration between Victory, Stone, and Dogfish Head Brewing.  Each brewery collaborated on this beer at Stone in California, and took the recipe home to brew and label under their own packaging.  This Victory Brewing edition has arrived first.  Still working on verifying if the Dogfish and Stone editions make it south.

Here’s Dogfish Head’s take on the story:

This beer is collaboration between Dogfish Head, Stone Brewing Co. (Escondido, CA), and Victory Brewing Company (Downington, PA).

The idea for this beer germinated way back in 2003 when the three guys (Sam from Dogfish, Greg from Stone and Bill from Victory) formed the BUFF alliance (Brewers United for Freedom of Flavor) – a noble endeavor with the goal to highlight the passion and camaraderie of the American craft brew movement.

So, BUFF didn’t really do anything (beyond talk a lot of talk) until 2010 when the three brewers finally got together to jointly brew at beer at the Stone Brewery. Saison du BUFF will first be brewed at Stone and then replicated at each of the other two breweries – same recipe, same ingredients, three different breweries throughout 2010.

Are they different? The same beer is brewed at different breweries.  As you will see in the video below, Sam calls this beer iterative.  A dialog if you will.  There will be some variations however subtle to this beer.  Worth trying all.

Style: Saison

Brewed with parley, sage, rosemary, & thyme.

6% ABV

Availability: Each brewery uses the same recipe, bottled under their own artwork.  Very limited.

CASK ALERT! – Victory Brewing’s Hop Devil

Now tapping at Taco Mac Prado’s “The Fred” is Victory Hop Devil.   Hop Devil is an American IPA brewed year round by Victory.

Hop Devil is brewed with whole flower American hops.  (Whole hops are the whole flower dried and uncompressed.  They also typically provide more hop aroma than hops in pelete form.  They also bitter beer less than other forms.)  Imported German 2 Row Malt is also used in Hop Devil.

As always, casks are unfiltered and unpasteurized.

6.7% ABV.

NOTE:  You must be a member with at least 13 beers (probably more now, not 100% sure) on your list in order to gain entry to “The Fred.”
