Press Release

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — A batch of Victory Brewing Company’s signature Storm King Stout is waiting in oak bourbon barrels, slowly aging and picking up flavors of bourbon, vanilla, oak and spices. Those aromas and tastes transform Storm King Stout into something so dark and intriguing, that’s what we named it — Dark Intrigue.

Dark Intrigue will continue to age in barrels from Jim Beam and Heaven Hill Distilleries until October, when the contents of 150 bourbon barrels will be blended together, packaged in 750 mL corked bottles and left to condition in the bottle until November. It will be released to the public on Wednesday, Nov. 23, a day we are calling Dark Wednesday.

“Having never delved into a bourbon barrel aged offering before, we were tentative with our beloved Storm King in terms of how much of it we subjected to the treatment,” Victory Brewing Company President and Co-Owner Bill Covaleski said. “Our audience clearly approved of this delicious creation last year so we have lots more in production now.”

Cases of Dark Intrigue sold out at our retail location in Downingtown last year in just 43 minutes. This year we expect to have 3000 cases for sale, which will be available at our retail shop and in limited quantities at distributors in the region.

Dark Intrigue is made up of a variety of malts, along with American centennial, cascade and Amarillo hops. It is 9.2% alcohol by volume.

A Victory For Ice Cream (And Root Beer)

Victory Ice Cream

Victory Brewing has been selling ice cream at the brewpub for years.  Now, the brewery has just started offering 3 flavors of ice cream, based off of 3 of their beers for sale “to go.”  The ice cream was created by Matt Krueger, the manager of Victory’s restaurant.  His idea comes straight from the brewing process itself.  Wort, the sugary liquid that is the base for creating beer is harvest and cooked down.  Each of the ice cream offerings use the wort from each of the beers.

The 3 varieties:

Triple Monkey – banana ice cream with peanuts & caramel.  Wort from Golden Monkey.

Hopped Up Devil – Cinnamon ice cream, cayenne and chocolate covered coffee beans.  Work from Hop Devil.

Storm King Crunch – Chocolate ice cream, malted milk balls.  Wort from Storm King.

The ice cream is only available at the pub in Downingtown (for now.) The ice cream is non alcoholic of course. Pints retail for $4.24 plus tax, while quarts are $7.99 plus tax.  <CBSPhilly>

ROOTBEER!
The brewery has just made their root beer available to go too.  (And the timing couldn’t be more perfect for those who love ice cream floats.)  Victory has been brewing its own root beer since 1997, but until May it was only available on draft in the brewpub. Now visitors to the Downingtown brewpub and retail shop can take the classic soda home, in cases or six-packs.

“Ron and I loved root beer growing up,” owner Bill Covaleski said, “so when we started Victory Brewing Company, we knew we’d be brewing root beer as well as traditional beer. Thanks to our restaurant we’ve always been able to focus on appealing to people of all ages, not just the 21 and over crowd. Bottling root beer so everyone can enjoy a cold Victory at home just made sense.”

Victory Root Beer currently can be purchased in the Victory retail shop for $5.99 per six-pack and $22.99 per case.

Victory Cancels Brewery Tours

Victory Brewing

Victory Brewing has had to make a tough decision.  Brew & cellar, or conduct brewery tours.  Bill Covaleski mentioned today on their website that tours of the brewery will no longer be conducted after July 4th, 2011.

Unfortunately, there was a challenging call that did have to be made at Victory Brewing Company. Those of you who have been fortunate enough to have peeked behind the artisanal/industrial curtain by touring our brewing operations over the last 15 years, consider yourself lucky. You have a memory that no one else can now achieve. As of July 4, we are choosing taste over vision. The world will go “blind” to our brewery operations as tours will no longer be available.

… The reality we now face, as brewing and cellar operations become a 7 day a week labor due to swelling orders, is that we cannot safely conduct both tours and business in tight spaces. In essence, you, as a consumer, made the dire decision for us. Your thirst for flavorful Victory beers has stolen your vision of their creation. We are truly sorry to present this news to you. At this time, there is no other option, despite the hand-wringing and postulating that took place during the many meetings we spent discussing this predicament.

A Smokey Belgian Dubbel From Victory

Victory Brewing (Downingtown, PA) is brewing up something a new for you.  A bottle conditioned Belgian dubbel with a smokey twist.  Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet, founders of Victory Brewing created this beer after a Germany trip in ’87.  Otto is a German smoked malt Belgian dubbel.

Covaleski on Otto:
“The complimentary flavors of smoked malt and Belgian yeast seemed like an obvious combination,” said Bill. “As far as we know, no one has bothered to put them together until now.”
Label:

In 1987, when we arrived in Bamberg, Germany for the first time, St. Otto was not there to greet two thirsty travelers in a rented Fiat. He’d been dead for 848 years but we were alive, and our recent visit to the Belgian brewery of Orval only fanned the flames of our desire for fermented pleasures. The smoked malt (‘rauch’) beers of this lovely town where St. Otto was once Bishop were our siren song, luring us into deep, exotic flavors that we never before imagined in beer. Three decades later we wondered what smoked malt might add to a Belgian-style dubbel ale. Here is it, an Otto revival of sorts. We hope it helps rejuvenate some of our brain cells that were martyred in Bamberg so long ago. — The Brewmasters of Victory

Style: Belgian dubbel
Hops: German
Malts: Munich, Caramel
Yeast: Trappist

Availability: 750ml bottles, corked & caged.
Arrival: October, 2011

8.1% ABV

Headwaters Pale Does Good Things

Victory Brewing’s Headwaters Pale Ale doesn’t just delight your tastebuds, but helps protect the environment.  The Downingtown based brewing company has donated part of the proceeds from the sales of their pale ale to the Guardians of the Brandywine, a group that promotes clean water.  Victory receives the water used in brewing from Brandywine creek, a mere 14 miles from the mash tun.

Victory for the Environment: Beer Grant Champions Clean Water Initiative

Victory Brewing Company donates a portion of proceeds from Headwaters Pale Ale to Guardians of the Brandywine to promote individual responsibility for clean water.

DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Beer is the product of four simple ingredients – water, hops, malt, and yeast. Victory Brewing Company prides itself in using the world’s best ingredients for making beer. The brewery was purposefully opened less than 14 miles from the pristine headwaters of the Brandywine Creek. Because of the important role water plays in the production of quality beer, Victory Brewing Company initiated The Headwaters Grant as a way to give back to the groups working hard to protect the natural resource.

In mid-February, Victory Brewing Company launched a new beer brand: Headwaters Pale Ale. The beer’s name pays homage to the water with which is it brewed, and a penny from every bottle sold is collected and distributed to the recipient of Victory’s Headwaters Grant.

On May 17, the Guardians of the Brandywine received the first Headwaters Grant.

“The pure water flowing from the East Branch of the Brandywine Creek has contributed so much to the character of Victory Brewing Company,” said Victory Brewing Company President, Bill Covaleski. “Therefore, it was an obvious step for us to give back to the creek which has so generously provided to us.”

This initial Headwaters Grant will assist The Guardians’ mission of achieving Exceptional Value designation for the upper reaches of the East Branch of the Brandywine, as well as to fund The Guardian’s program, “My Creek.” This outreach program aims to educate individuals to take ownership of clean water issues. With help from Victory Brewing Company, The Guardians plan to inspire citizens to start making a difference in their own backyards.

“Our shared belief in the value of clean water, healthy streams and rivers, and protecting the Brandywine make for an excellent partnership,” said Guardians of the Brandywine Secretary, Tish Molloy. “The Brandywine is a Chester County jewel and we look forward to working with Victory to protect and preserve the high quality waters that flow through it.”

Headwaters Pale Ale is Victory’s fastest growing brand. As the popularity of the beer increases, so will the size and reach of the grants awarded each year.
