Troeg’s new Hershey, PA location is under threat of flood waters.  John Trogner just mentioned this about state of affairs:

Our Hershey brewery is in great shape and we hope to be brewing soon” “T1 is closed in preparation of flooding and we are expected to remain closed through the weekend.  All access to brewery is under water so all roads are closed. For the past 24 hours we have removed 4 trailer loads of materials, ingredients and elevated everything remaining. So in the meantime all the millions of yeast cells are still happily fermenting and we will be hunkering down with a bottle of Perpetual IPA!

Victory’s Home Of Downingtown Under Water

While the Victory Brewery seems to be safe, residents of Downingtown, Pennsylvania are soaked from the same water that makes the beer.  Another brewing town in a string of brewing towns dealing with crazy weather. (RE: Vermont, New York, Philly).  Hershey Park in Hershey, PA suffered from flash flooding yesterday and 2 buffalo in the park died.  Troegs Brewing is putting the finishing touches on their new brewery at Hershey, no word if water was an issue there.

The borough of Downingtown was essentially “split in half” by flooding last night, she said. Downingtown Police Lt. Howard Holland said police were just starting to relax as the tributaries of the Brandywine Creek that snake through the borough were visibly receding and the rains had subsided. Then, with no warning, the Brandywine burst over its banks about 5:30 p.m., engulfing Route 30 and Pennsylvania Avenue and making it impossible to travel from one end of the borough to the other…

Troegs Scratch #47 Available

Troegs Brewing (Harrisburg, PA) released #47 in their Scratch series today, a white beer.  John Troegner, Brewmaster:

Our second foray into the white ale world comes with a little less and a little more from our first endeavor. We’ve reduced the gravity a bit to lower the ABV but dramatically increased the pepper and coriander, as well as adding locally-grown, organic unmalted winter wheat.  The coriander, sweet and bitter orange peel, black pepper and star anise were added to the hopback to intensify these diverse flavors.

With a dense haze from the unmalted wheat and a foamy white head, Scratch #47 incorporates citrus and spicy aroma notes with a hint of licorice from the star anise. The spices are offset by a doughy taste and the Lachouffe yeast gives a cidery finish.

Codename: Wit (or Witout) Two
Hops: Magnum, Saaz
Malt: Pils, White Wheat, Unmalted Winter Wheat (local/organic), Oats
Juju: Coriander, Sweet & Bitter Orange Peel, Black Pepper, Star Anise
Yeast: Lachouffe/Ardennes

Availability: 12oz bottles.  Brewery only release.

4.2% ABV, 10 IBUs

Troegs New Location On Schedule

Troegs Brewing’s new digs on Hershey Park Drive, Hershey PA is on schedule for opening.  The location aka “T2”  saw the delivery of new fermentation tanks on Wednesday.

If all goes well, T2 will be open in October.  The brewery is currently located in downtown Harrisburg. (Cross the railroad tracks, you’re there.)  The new space gives Troegs some much needed room to breathe, and the Paxton street location is small.  Hershey will allow for more tours, more capacity, larger taproom/growler space, and giftshop. John Troegner Describes Naked Elf

John Troegner spoke about 2011 Naked Elf on Facebook today:

Naked Elf is an exercise in deconstruction and minimalism. This ale has distinct roots in The Mad Elf minus some key components. The cherries? Gone. The honey? Gone. The chocolate malt? Gone.Coming in just under 8% ABV, Naked Elf is an unfiltered golden beauty that displays a pronounced yeast flavor that made The Mad Elf famous as well as a touch of alcohol and some mellow malt flavors.

Naked Elf was last available about 2 years ago. (I was told in the taproom last December it wasn’t made in 2010.  It’s back this year as Scratch #46

Troeg’s Adds Perpetual, 2 More Scratch

Troegs Brewing (Harrisburg, PA) is squeezing in a new release in August.  From their newsletter:

In our constant evolution as a brewery, we’ve developed on undying drive to meld the organic and the mechanical. Perpetual IPA utilizes our hopback and dry-hopping to engineer a bold Imperial Pale Ale. Perpetual IPA is 7.5% ABV and 85 IBUs. It features Bravo, Chinook and Mt. Hood hops in the boil, Mt. Hood and Nugget hops in the hopback and Citra, Cascade and Nugget hops in dry-hopping

“Straw in color and bittered with an abundance of citrus and spicy hops, Perpetual IPA is a tribute to building our new brewery and our desire to continue exploring,” says John Trogner.

Perpetual IPA will be in wholesalers by the third week of August and should be available in retailers no later than Labor Day.

Also, some info on the next couple of Scratch beers.  The next ones are #45 & #46

Scratch #45 — IPA.  Was released Friday, 7/29.  One case limit, or 2/6pks & 2 growler limit per person.

Scratch #46 – Naked Elf.  Last brewed 2 years ago.  Naked Elf is Mad Elf w/ out the cherries & honey.  Arrives once #45 sells out.

One more mention about the Scratch series-

We are already looking toward the fall for more Scratch Beers with a Wit beer (featuring raw wheat from a local farm), and Oktoberfest, a Wet-Hopped beer (a similar recipe to last year, again featuring Citra hops), and an Abbey all slated for brewing. We will announce release dates when the beers tell us they are ready.

Chocolate Cherry Stout July 25th

The newest Stone collaboration “Chocolate Cherry Stout” with Troeg’s Brewing and homebrewers Jason Fields and Kevin Sheppard hits shelves July 25th…

Escondido, CA | July 20, 2011 — Stone Brewing Co. is rolling out yet another collaboration beer, with the “Jason Fields & Kevin Sheppard / Tröegs / Stone Cherry Chocolate Stout” due to hit shelves on July 25.

San Diego homebrewing duo Jason Fields and Kevin Sheppard submitted their Cherry Chocolate Stout for this year’s Stone March Madness Homebrew Competition and AHA Rally, taking top honors out of 40 entries that were judged. As a result, they earned the opportunity to make a dramatically scaled up version with Brewmaster Mitch Steele on the 120-barrel Stone Brewing Co. system.

“We didn’t have any expectations going in,” explains Jason. “We’d just entered the competition just to get some feedback and notes on our beer.” Kevin adds, “The fact that we did win was absolutely surreal.”

“There were A LOT of really good beers that day,” recounts Mitch, one of the judges at the competition. “With each entry, we asked ourselves two simple questions: 1) ‘Is this a really creative beer?’ and 2) ‘Is this a really good beer?’ This one totally fit the bill.

Once the beer was decided on, an additional brewer had to be selected to complete the collaboration. Deciding to bring in John Trogner, Head Brewer of Pennsylvania’s famed Tröegs Brewing Co., was a no-brainer. “We make a holiday beer called Mad Elf, which uses a ridiculous amount of cherries,” explains John. “Plus, we’ve done a lot of brewing with chocolate. So I’m guessing that had something to do with why I was asked to pitch in.”

The rich, smooth stout was brewed in late April, with a blend of dark-roasted specialty malts, Callebaut chocolate liquor, vanilla beans, and 9000 pounds of dark and tart cherries. “Seeing how much the recipe was blown up to brew it on this system is amazing,” Jason chimes in. “And getting to work with everybody… it’s been so cool.”

“Collaboration beers are a big part of showing what our industry is about,” concludes John. “And it’s a lot like homebrewing: you think up an idea, invite your friends over, and brew it. There aren’t many other industries that can work that way, and I think it says a lot about what we do.”

Tasting Notes from Brewmaster Mitch Steele

“The taste is that of a very smooth stout, with an intense tart cherry beginning and a cocoa smoothness dominating throughout the palate. The tartness from the cherries balances out the smooth sweetness, and the addition of cacao and vanilla beans add intricate layers of chocolate and vanilla to the flavor profile. Definitely a beer to savor slowly and evaluate as it warms and changes in your glass.”
