Side Project #9 was Dark Side. Very tasty, and will only get better with time. In the tanks now at Terrapin Brewery (Athens, GA) is Side Project 10 – dubbed Capt’n Krunkles.
I just finished a call with Terrapin with some fun news. First and foremost, you can look forward to a cask with new releases. Especially with the seasonal series. Up next? Terrapin Rye Squared.
Heard of the Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA? Tragically, it was taken in a bad fire back in June of 2009. Georgia Theatre was an Athens landmark for music. Big bands like REM, David Alan Coe, B-52’S and Widespread Panic Continue Reading →
On Friday – 1/8/10 – Tower Wine & Spirits will be releasing 2 cases from it’s beer cellar. Terrapin/Left Hand Collaboration – Depth Charge, and Sweetwater’s DP Barleywine born in the Dank Tank last year.
As far as I know, you are the first know about this. This Tuesday at Taco Mac’s “The Fred” the first ( and I think only) cask of Terrapin’s New Side Project “Dark Side” will be tapping.
This is not exactly an event, but more of an opportunity. As fun as it is to drink beer, or should I say current beer, I get even more excited to drink aged/cellared beer. That brings us to today.
Craft beer is obviously turning heads. Upscale restaurants who once focused on wines, selling only macro lagers/ales are now having multi course beer dinners featuring craft brewers. This is a prime (no pun intended) example. It’s a little last minute, Continue Reading →

Krunkles is a Black IPA. While black IPA’s are not an official beer style, they are certainly popping up all over the place. My first was Stone Brewing’s 11th Anniversary turned Sublimely Self Righteous Ale. There is also Beer Here’s Dark Hops from Norway. Simplistically, these black IPA’s are brewed much like a regular IPA would be, but with black malts. They are deceptively hoppy, as most pour deep black in color.
Each time Terrapin rolls out a new beer, brewer Spike Buckowski will do a small write up with an ingredient outline, inspirations, etc. Unfortunately, he hasn’t written one yet – so I can’t tell you much about the hops/malts etc.
ETA on Capt’n Krunkles hitting the shelves is late February/ Early March.

Rye Squared is Terrapin’s next seasonal, after the wildly successful Wake & Bake. Rye Squared is a beefed up version of the year round Rye Pale Ale. As Terrapin describes it – “Double the malts, double the hops, double the flavor of the original Rye Pale recipe.” Here is your ingredient rundown –
Terrapin Brewing to Release Georgia Theatre Benefit Beers
Heard of the Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA? Tragically, it was taken in a bad fire back in June of 2009. Georgia Theatre was an Athens landmark for music. Big bands like REM, David Alan Coe, B-52’S and Widespread Panic have played there.
Terrapin Brewing, stationed in Athens, has announced a series of beers honoring the beloved landmark, and raise money for its rebuild. The series will be called “Terrapin’s Georgia Theatre Sessions,” and will contain 4 beers released over the course of 2010.
Series lineup in order of release —
Iron Tankard Old Stock Ale (MARCH) — Full details of this beer forthcoming, Old Stock Ale commemorates the original iron swimming pool that resided in the building when first built in 1889.
Double Feature Belgian Dubbel (JUNE) — In honor of the building’s conversion to the Elite Theater in 1935. Elite Theater showed its last film —“Brotherhood of Death” in October of 1975. It would not be the last time it was used as a movie theater.
Sound Czech, Czech Pilsner (SEPTEMBER) — Georgia Theatre opened as a music venue from 1977 – 1981. It reopened again as a music venue in 1989 until the fire in June ’09.
Hoptaneous Combustion Imperial IPA (DECEMBER) — Remembering the fire that destroyed the theater.
Each release will be available in 22 oz bottles in limited quantities sold only in Athens and Atlanta. Each of the bomber bottles will be individually boxed. 4 “Golden Tickets” will spread out over these releases. If you are lucky enough to find a Golden Ticket, it will mean you just won a lifetime ticket to the Georgia Theatre when it reopens. Terrapin is also speculating there could be some special goodies for the winners also.
There WILL be special cask events held in both Athens in Atlanta for each beer’s release. Believe me; I will let you know when and where.
Be on the lookout for these beers, and help Terrapin get the Georgia Theatre doors open again…

UPDATE! – This cask will feature Dark Side aged on Cherry Oak.

Sierra Nevada releases a Barleywine called Bigfoot annually. (Barleywines are a form of strong ale that originated from England. BW’s are strong 8%-12% ABV and are as strong as wine, but made from grain instead of fruits. Thus – barley.) Back to the point, 2009 marks the 25th release of Bigfoot. Today you can try not only the ’09 release, but you can also taste ’08 & ’07 all side by side.
Vertical tastings are particularly significant because it provides some great insight to how a beer ages and matures. I can’t tell you how many beers I have had that only get better with age. (Something you can throw back at your wine snob friends.) Hopefully by now you see that this is a particularly interesting opportunity to try the last 3 years of releases.
ALSO!!! To finish off your vertical tastings, you can also try Terrapin’s Wake & Bake 2008 & 2009 side by side. Wake and Bake is an Imperial Oatmeal Stout – and part inspiration for the now acclaimed Depth Charge.
To my knowledge, these will be available today whenever you hit the bar, but I make 100% sure and post.

Craft beer is obviously turning heads. Upscale restaurants who once focused on wines, selling only macro lagers/ales are now having multi course beer dinners featuring craft brewers. This is a prime (no pun intended) example. It’s a little last minute, but tickets are still available.
This dinner features Terrapin Brewing (Athens, GA) with multiple courses paired with Terrapin’s beer offerings. (NOTE: Depth Charge is featured, and paired with dessert.) Seats are $90 a piece.
