Tonight, February 26th – a cask of Sweetwater’s IPA – dry hopped w/ Centennial hops will be tapping at Taco Mac Metropolis. Usual time – 6pm
Sweetwater IPA is unpasturized and unfiltered. It’s a very citrusy and floral IPA that is extensively dry hopped. If I understand correctly, this cask has been dry hopped again with Centennial hops.
6.7% ABV

Tonight, in addition to the French Broad Wee Heavy-er Cask at Cypress Street will be 3 beers recently released. In now particular order –
Sweetwater’s BSP Quad – Belgian Quadtruple, 11% ABV. American interpretation of the Belgian Quad style. This strong beer has a lot going on, including hops and brett yeast. Some sweet with dark fruits. While 11%, it doesn’t really taste that way. Limited release from the Dank Tank.
Terrapin Rye Squared – DIPA, 8.5% ABV. Note citrus hops, malts, sweet tones in this season offering from Terrapin. Rye add some spice and pulls it all together. Seasonal release.
Dogfish Head Black & Blue – Fruit Beer, 11% ABV. Belgian golden ale w/ pureed blackberries and blueberries. Flavor seems to meld seemlessly w/ the golden ale. Not often found on draft. Limited release.
Also, don’t forget the French Broad Cask! All tapping as a part of Beer Geek Tuesday’s at Cypress Street in Midtown. While there, make sure you geek out with beer manager Wes Anderson. It all starts at 7 pm tonight!

Just to reiterate something that I think needs some clarification. Sweetwater Brewery has a special tank used for special “one of” series of brews, dubbed the “Dank Tank.” Dank Tank isn’t the name of the beer, just where it is more or less born, or created. The Dank Tank has given birth to beers such as DP Barleywine, Big Ol’ Belgian Blue Balls, and Wet Dream. It’s most recent offspring? BSP or Belgian, Strong, Pause…
BSP is a Belgian Quad. Belgian quads are in the same family as Belgian dubbels and Tripels. The name quad, like tripel is unknown in origin, but in Trappist breweries tended to refer to the stronger or strongest beer in their lineup. (Dubbel, Tripel, Quad) Stylistic however, these beers are strong Belgian ales.
However, BSP alludes to something more. Perhaps a famous beer pub nestled in Decatur, Ga known by it’s same initals???? Hmmm??? It better be ringing some bells by now. Both Sweetwater and Brickstore Pub were founded in the same year.
From the bottle –
“Belgian, Strong, Pause… for a moment and let’s consider the Possiblities. Sure, you were thinking Pale, but it’s not at all Pale. Rather the contrary. The P could stand for Perfect: perfectly befitting a warm respite in front of a fire on a cold February night – but we don’t say chit like that. You’ll probably just drink this Belgian Quad like a session beer and hope for the best in the morning anyway so screw it. Maybe the P stands for your favorite pub, the place where you go to hang out, drink killer beer and enjoy life. Yup, that’s the one. The Quad part, well thats a style for sure, but it could be in reference to a collaboration between a Pub and a Brewhouse that opened the same year out of friendships and a love for great beer. Yeah, those 4 things are in here too. “
BSP is 11% ABV.
Available in 22 oz bottles, limited to this one time brew. Limited draft coming soon (Week of 2/22)
On Friday – 1/8/10 – Tower Wine & Spirits will be releasing 2 cases from it’s beer cellar. Terrapin/Left Hand Collaboration – Depth Charge, and Sweetwater’s DP Barleywine born in the Dank Tank last year.

The next round of Sweetwater’s Catch and Release seasonal series has returned to shelves – Happy Ending.
Happy ending is a dry hopped Russian Imperial Stout. This year, the rumor is that the Happy Ending saw the inside of the Dank Tank. I don’t know if there are any differences in this years release from the ’08 edition.
Unfortunately, Sweetwater didn’t get back to me in regards to this release, so I can only really tell you what is already known.
ABV – 9%
Availability – 6 packs, kegs, liter bottles. January – March.

ATLANTA (December 17th, 2009) — SweetWater Brewing Company is putting a personal touch on cask ale festivals by inviting some lucky ducks to come down to the brewery and create their own version of a cask ale. The “Brew Your Cask Off” Cask Ale Festival on March 20th, 2010 will feature 70+ cask entries all made on site at SweetWater Brewery by the fortunate folks who are invited or won the chance to brew their own recipe.
“We are creating a couple of base beers for them to start with and then letting their wild creative side take over from there!” said Mark Medlin, SweetWater’s Brewmaster. He will be overseeing all of the casks to make sure the final products are as tasty as the inspired recipes these amateur brewers had intended them to be. “Of course, we’ll have a few casks of our own for the festival as well.”
Those invited will be given a Cask recipe form and work directly with Hop City, a local package store and home brew shop, to pull together their master list of ingredients to go in their casks. They will have access to a diverse amount of yeast strains, spices, fruits, dozens of varieties of hops, and a plethora of offbeat adjuncts and additions. The only limits for this will be their creativity! All entries will be professionally judged prior to the tasting with awards for the Best Brews being given out during the Festival. Folks attending will also have their voices and votes heard as well with the People’s Choice award for the top cask.
The diverse list of guest brewers will include retailers of SweetWater brews, National and local beer media, home brewing societies, a few nonprofit organizations, and a some celebrities who will be stepping up to the plate to show off their skills. The non-profits will have the ability to not only have a cask entered into the festival, but also to raise some money for their organizations by auctioning off that privilege as well. Once on board, the guest brewers will work with Hop City package and home brew supply store to acquire all the necessary ingredients to create their masterpiece.
Kraig Torres, owner of Hop City says “We are so excited to be a part of Sweetwater’s upcoming ‘Brew Your Cask-Off’ Pro-Am. We are huge fans of the beer and highly passionate home-brewers; frankly we aren’t surprised Sweetwater has found a way to tap into both of these outlets! Our entire team – including our experts in beer, wine and home brewing – have contributed ideas for ingredients that will make each entrant’s beer truly unique. Considering we stock more than 1,500 beers here at Hop City, we had plenty of resources for inspiration. We know it’s going to be one heck of a con As always, Sweetwater has found a novel way to grab the attention of the beer world here in Atlanta and beyond.”
