A Little Beer & A Litte Satan With Surly Pentagram

Surly PentagramSurly Brewing’s future satanic offering – Pentagram.  A wild ale aged in red wine barrels.  This evil beer looks like it would fly around the room if it could.  Surly mentioned this release back at GABF in October. It might become an annual release. It was apparently known as Surly Five from a year ago.

This Arcane Seal guards an enigmatic brew that is FUNKY, DARK, and SOUR.  If you choose t0 break the seal, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!  100% Brettanomyces Dark beer fermented stainless and aged in used red wine barrels. “Brett” is a unique yeast strain that produces flavors that would be considered offensive if  they were not intentional. Flavors of sour  cherry, tobacco, oak and classic “Brett” barnyard funk balanced by dark munich mall chewiness. Enjoy immediately or age at cellar temperature for a couple years.

UNLEASH PENTAGRAM. You have been warned!

Style: American Wild Ale (Wine Barrel Aged)
Availability: 750 ml bottles
Arrival: TBA

?? ABV

Surly also is working on their 6th Anniversary beer – SŸX.

note: The above is tentative.  Subject to change at whim of the brewer, the beer, or the barrel.

This Demon Is Surly SŸX

There’s a hell of a lot going on with Surly Brewing these days.  Law changes, brewery expansions, baseball parks and more.  Not bad for six years.  This is Surly SYX, a strong ale that is the result of aging it on a “honeycomb” of different woods.

Woah. Who would have thought? Another great year flew by. bringing us to the big SIX. What better way to celebrate than to challenge ourselves with unfamiliar brewing techniques and materials? Utilizing six wood species in a “Honey Comb*” shape for aging this year’s anniversary beer. SYX comes in at Alc. 15% by Vol. and is one to be savored with its pale gold color, dry toffee and fruit character and warming afterglow finish. ‘HONEY COM is a registered trademark of Black Swan Cooperage. IR in Park Rapids. MN
Todd Haug
The last year has been an eventful one for Surly Brewing Company. We changed some laws, brewed more beer than we ever thought possible, and made some plans for a new brewery. It seems fitting that Sla will be our biggest beer ever. As with all our anniversary beers. Todd has created a beer unlike anything we have done before. This year’s art is a one-of-a-kind illustration collaboration between Todd and local artist Michael Berglund.

Style:              (Oak Aged)
Availability: 750 ml bottles
Arrival:

15% ABV

Surly Brewing Launches “Bandwagon IPA”

A plethora of Surly Brewing beers will be available at Minnesota Twins games this season. The beers will include Cynic, Bender, Coffee Bender, Bitter Brewer, and Hell.   The brewery wants to add Furious ( an American IPA) but there is some uncertainty regarding availability of some hops to make it.

In place of Furious, Surly is debuting Bandwagon IPA, an IPA brewed in it’s place. Bandwagon is exclusive to Target Field all summer long.

Style: IPA
Hops: Centennial, Chinook
Malts: Crystal, Pale
Yeast: English Ale

Taste? Per Surly –   Bandwagon is pale gold in color and has flavors of caramelly biscuits slathered in pineapple-orange marmalade.

Available at Twins home games, right now! [Surly]

Surly Narrows Search

The search for Surly’s new location is being narrowed down.  Per the brewery today:

While we’ve been doggedly busy behind the scenes, we can’t share details just yet on our new brewery project or the locations under consideration. After the bill was signed last year, we went to work to find the perfect site for our Destination Brewery.

We’re not just looking for a bigger building, or any available plot of land; we are looking for the future home of a world-class brewery, so there’s a lot to consider from location, to zoning, to growth flexibility, to access, to image, to water supply. It would be easy to find a simple plot of land 40 miles outside of the Twin Cities, but that’s not our vision. Besides, the Surly way isn’t the easy way.

Though we’ve been quiet, we haven’t been sitting still. We’ve been touring breweries around the country to compile ideas, and have been making progress on the big question: Where’s it gonna be?

When we started our search last fall we identified more than 80 properties in almost 30 cities. We’ve narrowed it to 8 properties spanning several cities and a few counties. This is a 100-plus year decision, so a lot has to be considered for the site of the Destination Brewery. We’ll be getting more Surly soon

In the meantime, we are beginning our search for an architecture/engineering firm for the new brewery, and again we are looking to Surly Nation for input. Our request for qualifications can be found in our Brewer’s Blog on our website.
