Stone’s Quingenti Millitre Series kicked off in July. It’s Stone’s new barrel aging program. A great idea from one of the fastest growing breweries in the United States with only one problem. The beers are extremely rare. Unless you are reading this in or geographically near to San Diego, California, there is little change you will taste the awesome that lies within these bottles. However being beer geeks, or at the very least- beer interested, we like to know what’s up. So here’s whats up.
Label: I write this the Tuesday following out Stone 15th Anniversary Celebration. More than 6,500 folks came out to help us celebrate our 15 years of vein in the biz. And as with every other year, we are blessed to find this one filled with many many interesting and exciting things. New “Stone Quingenti Millilitre” 500ml cork-and-wire-bale program announced? Check. New coffee table worthy book The Craft Of Stone Brewing Co: Liquid Lore, Epic Recipes & Unabashed Arrogance released Late Sept 2011? Check. Another tome I co-authored called The Brewer’s Apprentice also coming out in Sept? Check. New Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens -Liberty Station announced? Check. New “Stone Company Store” in the South Park neighborhood of San Diego opened? Check. Stone Europe announced? The idea, check. The announcement of A building expansion to the south of the brewery that may allow us to eventually brew a half a million barrels per year? Check. Impending secession from the city-state of Escondido to form our own Stonelandia? Uh, no, not yet. We like Escondido! Although it’s pretty amusing to ponder the thought… hmmm.. Stonelandia. I like the sound of it! Heh. OK back to the moment. The thing I left out in the list above was the announcement that along with the hotel and event space mentioned, we’ll have a new barrel-aging room. Enough room from many hundreds of barrels, which will mean a future filled with a lot more of the likes of what you have here in your hands. You could call it “a tasty barrel-aged future” if you like. I think I will.
Style: Barleywine (Belgian yeast) Availability: 500ml bottles. Estimated 550 bottle yield. Release: Stone will announce how they will be released
Stone Brewing just seems to have a European itch. On Monday Stone Brewing sent Brewmaster Mitch Steele to England to Wadworth’s historic Northgate Brewery in Wiltshire where he will be brewing a collaboration beer. Stone and Wadworth’s collaboration will be served during the 2 ½ week long Real Ale & Cider Festival at the 800 chain Wetherspoon’s & Lloyd’s #1.
The beer? A Stone-style Wadworth beer. San Diego Session Ale gets a little European hop treatment.
Hops: Centennial, Columbus, Amarillo, Delta, and Calypso Malt: English Malts — pale malt with 5% each of crystal and Munich Yeast: Wadworth’s house yeast strain, traditional English variety

Press Release
Escondido, CA | August 15, 2011 — Stone Brewing Co. has released its newest beer, commemorating a decade and a half of brewing excellence with the Stone 15th Anniversary Escondidian Imperial Black IPA.
The name–besides being a mild-yet-necessary chore for dutiful writers, dedicated retailers and enthusiastic publicans to write out in its entirety–is Stone Brewing President & co-founder Steve Wagner’s chuckling jab at those looking to lay territorial claim to the Black IPA style.
“There’s this small faction of people that seems to think it can call Black IPAs ‘Cascadian Dark Ales,’ historical accuracy be damned,” Wagner explains. “So, we thought we’d lightheartedly lay claim to our own style, dubbing it ‘Escondidian,’ both as an homage to our hometown of Escondido, CA and as a gentle ribbing to those Black IPA fans worshipping a false Cascadian idol.”
And while this point of contention may only be of import to 0.01% of craft beer fans, what is important is how the beer looks, smells, and ultimately tastes. “Stone 15th Anniversary Escondidian Imperial Black IPA pours thick and opaque, with a deep brown head of foam,” boasts Brewmaster Mitch Steele. “Intense herbal and piney hops are followed by roasted malt notes redolent of coffee, anise, and cocoa, all coming together to form one of the darkest, hoppiest and most colossal beers we’ve ever brewed.”
“To those confused few still sipping a Black IPA by any other name, I hear your argument… that Black India Pale Ale is a bit oxymoronic on the surface,” adds Wagner. “But as an English Major, I can firmly stand behind the term Black IPA. At its core, language is all about one thing: conveying meaning. And there’s no doubt what Black IPA means: an IPA that’s black. Elementary, my dear Watson!”
