Stone Brewing Co Donates More Than $115K To Waterbury Relief (PR)

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (August 27, 2012) — Stone Brewing Co. has donated $86,373.61 toReBuild Waterbury and $30,000 to Waterbury Good Neighbor Fund for efforts to restore Waterbury, Vt., a community that was damaged by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.  The proceeds are from the sale of the collaboration beer, The Alchemist / Ninkasi / Stone More Brown Than Black IPA, brewed in December 2011 with Ninkasi Brewing Companyin Eugene, Ore. and The Alchemist Pub and Brewery in Waterbury.  The beer was sold in 17 states, including Vermont.

The Alchemist Pub and Brewery was one of the unfortunate casualties of Tropical Storm Irene. The destruction of their business prompted Stone’s brewmaster, Mitch Steele, to invite The Alchemist owner John Kimmich to San Diego as an opportunity to get away from the reality of the storm and its damages. John’s wife, Jen Kimmich, suggested perhaps they could brew a beer together at Stone, and Mitch agreed. To complete the brewing trifecta, Mitch invited Jamie Floyd, brewer and co-founder of Ninkasi Brewing Company, to join in the efforts. Together they brewed The Alchemist / Ninkasi / Stone More Brown Than Black IPA, and Stone vowed to donate all funds from the beer to non-profits helping to restore the community.

“Helping the Waterbury community and our fellow brethren at The Alchemist Pub and Brewery is what the craft beer industry is all about,” Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co. CEO and co-founder stated. “As soon Mitch heard about the flooding, he immediately reached out to John, and asked how he could assist. We hope these funds will help Waterbury continue to rebuild.”

The Waterbury Good Neighbor Fund is a non-profit organization designed to provide financial assistance to those in need in the greater Waterbury community.  Stone provided Waterbury Good Neighbor Fund with a check in advance of the sales to assist with the immediate needs of people affected by Tropical Storm Irene. Since the storm struck, the Good Neighbor Fund has distributed $390,000.

“The donation from Stone Brewing Co. came at a crucial time; we were almost out of funds and were heading into the hardest part of the heating season,” said Rev. Peter Plagge, who helps administer the Good Neighbor Fund. “The $30,000 advance on the profits from the sale of The Alchemist / Ninkasi / Stone More Brown Than Black IPA was a godsend for many of those whose heating bills were stacking up. It was a great privilege to be able to share the wealth.”

ReBuild Waterbury is a long-term recovery project that functions under the auspices of Revitalizing Waterbury, an established 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It was formed as a result of the devastating flooding that occurred in August 2011. Their mission is to assist individuals and families in the greater Waterbury-Duxbury area who need assistance rebuilding their homes after the disastrous effects of Tropical Storm Irene.

“We are continually amazed and grateful for the support of people and organizations in Vermont, and all over the country,” Theresa Wood, chair of ReBuild Waterbury stated. “It’s particularly touching when a business like Stone Brewing Co. in California, donates proceeds from their collaborative limited edition ale made with Ninkasi Brewing Company and The Alchemist Pub and Brewery.  This will help significantly as we push to meet our fundraising goal of $918,000.”

The funds raised for ReBuild Waterbury are used to purchase building materials, from sheetrock to flooring and kitchen cabinets, as well as provide skilled trade services such as plumbing and electrical work.  Coupled with the use of volunteer and low-cost labor, ReBuild Waterbury continues the recovery process to assist flood-impacted families.

Tasting Notes, provided by Brewmaster Mitch Steele

Appearance: Golden with a creamy white head
Aroma: Intense dank hoppiness, resin, peaches, and hints of tropical fruit are all evident in the aroma.
Taste: Smooth malt upfront, quickly dissipating into a massive onslaught of hops.  The dankness and peach come through strongly.
Palate: Smooth, hints of alcohol, and a perfect balance of bitterness and dryness on the back end.
Overall: We took the opportunity with this beer to use several interesting techniques we’ve learned during our many years of brewing great Double IPAs.  The result is an intense dry beer with very little malt sweetness, but with plenty of malt flavor to provide a background to the enormous…or shall I say “ginormous” hop character.

Hopping, as might be expected, was over the top. First, the brew was mash-hopped with Calypso, a beautiful fruity hop that we also used in our Stone 16th Anniversary IPA, after which we kettle-hopped with a very small dose of Super Galena hop extract for bittering. Then, using a technique known in homebrew circles as “hop bursting,” we loaded up very heavily on the flavor hops at the end of the boil and in the whirlpool. Simcoe, Delta, Target and Amarillo were used in the late kettle hop. Motueka, Citra, and Cascade were used for the whirlpool hop. As you can clearly tell, this beer was super hoppy even before we dry-hopped it, but then we went for it…dry-hopping with one pound per barrel EACH of New Zealand Nelson Sauvin and Australian Galaxy. Drink extra-super-dank-and-tasty Stone Enjoy By 09.21.12 IPA well before its 35-day shelf life to maximize the pungent glory that this beautiful, intense hop profile provides.

This Is Stone’s 35 Day Freshness Experiment

A couple of days ago BSJ mentioned Stone Brewing Co.’s new hoppy offering –Enjoy By 09.21.12 IPA. The beer has its freshness dating very (very) prominently displayed on the label.  I’m told by a local brewery rep that the beer will launch in three United States markets.  Chicago (Windy City Distributors), Southern California (close to Stone), and New Jersey through Hunterdon Distributors.

So how does this work?

Starting on August 17th, Stone will bottle, keg and ship this fresh hoppy offering, which will immediately pass through distributors arriving at on and off premise locations. From brewery to your mouth, it should take about 7 days. That gives the beer drinkers 4 weeks to enjoy this IPA. Any remaining “Enjoy By” in the market will be pulled from taps/shelves and returned to the distributors.

So that leaves us with why?

Stone’s idea with the 35 day coordination of shipping, receiving, and drinking will reinforce the idea and importance of fresh beer.

Any other markets?

In theory. Stone wants to see the successes and failures of this “fresh” experiment before moving to more markets.

Style: Imperial IPA
Availability: 22oz bombers, Draft.

Stone Brewing Co 16th Anniversary (PR)

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (August 13, 2012) — Yet another year has passed, and Stone Brewing Co. is yet another year older — 16 to be exact. Tasting Notes, provided by Brewmaster Mitch Steele

Appearance: Beautiful light amber with a thick creamy tan head.
Aroma: An incredible blend of fruits: citrus, lemon, and peaches, with hints of mint and dry-roasted nutty malt flavors.
Taste: A very clean maltiness, intense peach/mango Amarillo hops, hints of apples and berries, finishing in a burst of fresh lemon, hop bitterness, and herbal spiciness.
Palate: Medium body with smooth and complex malt flavors and the very slightest hint of alcohol heat, with a refreshingly bitter and citrusy finish.
Overall: From the first time I smelled a broken leaf from a lemon verbena bush at Stone Farms, I thought its intense lemon character would be a great addition to an IPA. It truly is “more lemon than lemon.” The lemon flavors combine wonderfully with the peach and tropical mango flavors from the Amarillo, and the apple and berry notes from the Calypso hops. The result is an intense and bitter take on a double IPA.
