And the Stone Dream Beer Winner Is…

Stone Brewing Co. asked their fans to vote on what beer they wanted to see brewed (or re-brewed.) A victor has been chosen – Stone Smoked Porter w/ Vanilla Beans.

This brew apparently came out way ahead of the competition. It was released alongside a second edition – Smoked Porter with chipotle peppers. Expect the vanilla bean version to be released again in December, 2013.

Close second to the Smoked Porter with vanilla beans included Aleman/Two Brothers/Stone Dayman Coffee IPA, Stone 15th Anniversary Escondidian Imperial Black IPA, Baird/Ishi/Stone Japanese Green Team IPA.

Stone Co-Founder Taking A Sabbatical

There is a great article in the San Diego voice about Stone Brewing Co’s co-founder Greg Koch.  The [eccentric] point man for the brewery will be going completely off the grid on a six month sabbatical in February. To return sometime in July.

We’ve reached out to the brewery to get a couple of details of this planned time off. No word yet. (It’s early in California.)

Other interesting note from the piece. The brewery is making some changes to the by-laws. Upon completion, the brewery will be unable to be sold to a big corporation. If it does, it can’t exists as Stone Brewing Co. (A bit of a dig at Goose Island perhaps?) [SanDiegoVoice]

Stone’s “Crime” Returning to Quingenti

Stone Brewing Co’s “Crime” has been spotted around the country on tap. It was Lukcy Basartd Ale beer “ruined” with peppers from Stone Farms. A “crime” to ruin such good beer with such intense heat. Stone took that beer and aged it in Scotch whiskey and the result was 2012’s Quingenti release of Crime.

Lovers of strong ale, peppers and barrel aging can get pysched again. 2013 Crime is just as fun, but with a barrel change to bourbon instead of Scotch whiskey.

Peppers include mid-level-heat red and green jalapefios and ultra-hot black nagas, Caribbean red hots, Moruga scorpions and fatalis.

Style: American Strong Ale (Barrel Aged, w/ Peppers)
Availability: 500 ml bottles. Limited Release
Arrival: TBA

8.5% ABV

Stone Barrel Aged Series Goes Southern

The 2013 rare as $hit Stone Brewing Co. Quingenti Milliltiere Series rolls on with a southern inspired offering. The brewery has taken Double Bastard, a strong ale not for the timid palate, and aged it a blend of Kentucky bourbon barrels and virgin bourbon barrels. Some of the barrels aged the “Suitable for Cave Aging” tribute to beer great Danny Williams.

Style: American Strong Ale (Barrel Aged)
Availability: 500ml bottles, corked & caged
Arrival: TBA

Flavor Notes from Stone: Intense smoke and vanilla flavors From the virgin bourbon barrels’ charred American oak, nuances of butterscotch and caramel front the Kentucky bourbon ‘barrels, and fudgy chocolate notes produced by Kentucky bourbon barrels that once held Stone Suitable for Cave Aging Imperial Smoked Porter Tribute to Danny Williams all meld into a very complex, well structured beer with intense flavor.

Stone’s Mitch Steele Is Brewing at Adnams

More for the – hey that’s cool factor, and not, can’t wait to try this in America factor. Mitch Steele, aka The Hop-Tripper is brewing in England this week. He is brewing a black IPA with Adnams that will debut at the JD Wetherspoon pub chain there. Tapping in November if you are reading this from England.

The recipe is much like one that was brewed at the Stone Liberty Station brewery called Stone Supremely Self-Conscious Ale. That too is a black IPA with amarillo and simcoe hops.
