Sierra Nevada Rules Out TN & VA. Some Search Parameters, New Brands

Everyone is wondering where Sierra Nevada’s new brewery will be built.  A few spots have been ruled out.

Blount County, Tennessee

Blount County is no longer under consideration for the Sierra Nevada project,” the release states. “We appreciate the interest the brewing company had in operating a plant in Blount County and understand their reasons for not locating here.

Christiansburg, Virginia

The Roanoke Times that brewery took Montgomery County out of consideration because the location that it was eying is now under contract with Utah-based Backcountry.com.

Sierra Nevada has been taking a  good bit into consideration before building this new brewery.  Parameters include –

School System (workers have kids)
Water Quality (Key ingredient in beer)
Community Quality (They take pride in beer, people, and quality of life)
Price and sustainability.  Even the brewery at Chico could fail so don’t get financially cock with new location build.
Logistics are a concern, but things like a railroad aren’t  a full requirement.

Interestingly, the new east coast location could see new brands and brews, specifically for the east coast according to assistant brewmaster Terrance Sullivan.

With Sierra doing a little more barrel aging (starting in 2012) the east coast see beers aged in Jim Beam/Jack Daniels barrels, while the west sees different sets of local whiskey barrels.

At any rate, Sierra is definitely evolving.

Sierra Nevada Creating New Ovila Beer In 2012

Sierra Nevada is about to ship (or has already started shipping) their 3rd release in the Ovila Series – Quad.   That’s 3 for the year – Dubbel, Saison, and Quad.

Dubbel will return again in 2012 -in new 375ml packaging 4 packs. There will be a new release in 2012, brewed with the monks of New Clairveaux – Belgian Single.  Single is slated to be a Belgian Golden Ale.  That might not be it’s name at the end of the day, but the style is pretty set in stone.

The collaborations might not stop there, Sierra Nevada will evaluate that at a later date.

Barrel Aged Bigfoot In 2012

Sierra Nevada Barrel Aged BigfootI had a few beers with Sierra Nevada’s assistant brewmaster Terrance Sullivan last night.  We chatted about things going on a Chico – past, present, & future.  There is a lot going on these days at Sierra.  Here is a series of snippets of whats in store.

Those lovers of both Bigfoot Barleywine and barrel aging will be thrilled to hear about the two coming together next year.  2012 will see the release of Barrel Aged Bigfoot.  Sierra has obtained a mixture of whiskey barrels (Jack Daniels, Heaven Hill, Jim Beam) and are working on some test batches as you read this.  Somewhere in mid-late 2012, BA Bigfoot will debut.

Size?  Still in discussing.  Potentially new 375ml packaging. Or 12oz or 750 mls.

Release will be localized to Chico.  Although, he did go on to say – if you are a market that receives something like Life & Limb, then you might receive some BA Bigfoot.  A lot more to come on this…
