Molson Coors acquires Detroit’s Atwater Brewery

Tenth & Blake Beer Company, a division of Molson Coors (previously Miller Coors) has acquired Detroit-based Atwater Brewery.

Atwater Block Brewery was founded in 1997 in Detroit’s Rivertown District. in 2005, Mark Rieth purchased the brewery outright.

Since the brewery’s inception, Atwater now operates three taphouse locations in Detroit, Grosse Pointe Park, and Grand Rapids.

Today, the brewery announced they have signed an agreement with Tenth & Blake to join their growing portfolio which includes Saint Archer, Terrapin Beer Company, Hop Valley Brewing, Revolver Brewing, and AC Golden.

“The agreement with Tenth and Blake is both the culmination of our past and the catapult to our future. For Atwater to continue to grow, it will require both capital and brewing expertise. Tenth and Blake brings both, which makes them the ideal strategic partner to help us continue to live our mantra ‘Born in Detroit. Raised Everywhere.'” – Mark Rieth, Atwater Brewery owner

Tenth & Blake’s last acquisition was in 2016 with Revolver.

Atwater produced just over 20,000 barrels of beer (620,000 gallons) in 2019. Recently, the brewery increased its production of hard seltzers. Atwater currently distributes to 12 states.

Georgia’s Reformation Brewery opens 3rd location

Reformation Brewery has officially opened its third location in the Peach State – a taproom in Smyrna.

Spencer Nix and Reformation Brewery have made some big moves over the past few years. In 2018, the brewery opened a second location in downtown Woodstock. In 2019, the brewery expanded its production facility in Canton, north of Atlanta, into The Mill on Etowah, an old denim factory.

As 2020 begins, Reformation has opened a third location, a taproom and future blendery in Smryna. The city recently expanded its open policy to include Riverview Landing, a new restaurant district on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The taproom spans 2500 square feet with 16 taps that will focus on India pale ales and sour/wild ales.

Since open container purchases cannot be glass, Reformation is offering silicon pints for purchase on-site. The move is aimed at reducing plastic use and waste. Those purchasing the silicone pints will receive a 3% discount on draft purchases using the refillable cup as guests walk the property.

“Reformation Brewery has always been committed to investing in the communities we serve. Our brewhouse is highly efficient, using less wastewater than traditional systems. Adding a reusable cup that’s also compliant with the walkability of our neighborhoods was an easy next step. We look forward to continuing these investments in 2020.” – Spencer Nix, CEO & Co-Founder

The Smyrna space will also serve as a blendery, for Reformation’s barrel-aging, and mixed fermentation projects.

Reformation Brewery at Riverview Landing is now open Wednesday – Thursday 4pm-9pm, Friday 3pm-11pm, Saturday noon-11pm, Sunday noon-9pm. Once Grand Champion BBQ opens nearby,  the brewery plans to add hours on Tuesday, and extend operation on other days to include lunch hours.

A grand opening date for the property on March 28th.
