Newcastle’s Newest: Caledonian Scotch Ale

Newcastle’s special release series continues in 2014 with the addition of Newcastle Caledonian Scotch Ale.  The scotch ale style got its start in Edinburgh, Scotland in the 18th century. “Scotch Ale” was a terminology for strong ales that were exported out of the city. Strong Scotch ales are sometimes called “wee heavy.”

Scotch Ale is a classic brew that originated in Edinburgh, Scotland in the 18th century. Rich, full-flavoured and fulfilling, our Scotch Ale is a blend of malts with toffee notes and a mellow hop.The beauty of this style is its fulsome malt character that is simply mouth-watering.

Caledonian Brewery opened in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1869. It is the only surviving brewery built in the 19th century. Heineken purchased the Caledonian Brewery in 2004. It is fitting, the oldest Scottish brewery would brew this historical offering.

With this inspiration, we’ve created Newcastle Bombshell, an English style blonde ale.The combination of Cascade, Hallertau and Northdown hops balance this golden coloured ale’s light aroma and bitterness with toasted malt to ensure a silky smooth finish. After one sip of this brew, we’re sure you’ll agree she’s a real bombshell.

A Look At Newcastle’s New National TV Spots [Videos]

Newcastle Brown Ale announced to they are launching a new national campaign dubbed “No Bollocks.”  Each spot is filmed on Location in Newcastle, England.  The brewery describes their approach in today’s press release:

“With this campaign we are going to be very honest with our consumers. Our guys know it when they are marketed to, so we believe it’s time for a beer brand to give it to them straight, just like their best mates would do,” said Charles van Es, brand director, Newcastle Brown Ale. “The people of Newcastle, England — Geordies — don’t take themselves too seriously, love a good joke, and most importantly, they tell it like it is. Our ads celebrate these traits by using a no-nonsense approach, where we are not over promising anything.”

Founder’s joins Werewolf & Winter IPA in the brewery’s seasonal release lineup.  The limited release series is currently only available in Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Denver, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Phoenix, California, Virginia, North Carolina, & South Carolina.  Draft only, with 12oz bottles hitting stores in February.

The name, like the star on its label, is a tribute to the heritage of the five founding brewers of Victorian-era Newcastle. Only one Limited Edition is special enough to bear the name Newcastle Founders Ale. The name, like the star on its label, is a tribute to the heritage of the five founding brewers of Victorian-era Newcastle. Its nutty brown colorlight-bodied flavor and malty dry, bitter finish will make you as proud of our heritage as we are.  Available for the first time in the U.S., Newcastle Founders’ Ale is a full-bodied, drinkable brew with dry, hoppy and roasted flavors. The classic Bitter ale is balanced by subtly sweet aroma notes of caramel and fruit with a short, clean finish.

Newcastle just announced the launch of Winter IPA, the newest offering in its Limited Edition series.  Winter IPA joins Werewolf, and soon to be Founder’s Ale in the series Newcastle states Winter IPA  is a salute to original British IPAs and “stays true to the original, subtly hopped recipes of traditional 18th century India Pale Ales.”

Per Newcastle: Marked by a strong hop aroma and a zesty character with hints of malt, Winter IPA features just a touch of sweetness to offer a delicate and creamy mouthfeel. Pouring a seductive copper color, the brew offers subtle caramel notes, a full body and a balanced finish.
