“From the first day of the first mash of the first recipe in the first space to this oasis 13 years on the road; We have worked hard to walk in the footsteps of our hero brewers. The Esteemed brewer of California’s best Pale Ale, the Noble Brewer of the planet’s only legal Steam Beer, and Oregon’s Rebel Brewer from Newport. Thirteen years down the road, we have found our own voice as brewers but our admiration for the Great Ones has not dimmed one bit. If we walked well down the hero’s path ourselves, perhaps we too have been an inspiration for others. Beer is a Bronze Age business and we feel honored to have left our footprints on its path into history, at the same time leaving our flavors on your buds. Thanks for your trust over the years and we hope you enjoy this specially brewed Hi-Gravity Auburn offering. Beer Speaks. People Mumble!”

Lagunitas Wilco Tango Foxtrot

Last year it was 2009 Correction Ale, an American IPA with Imperial overtones.  The message? We’re all bozos on this bus… a beer aimed to help with the recession blues.  In 2010, Lagunitas was hoping to have a cheerful, positive release but by the looks of things we don’t know where we are.  I think Lagunitas hit the mark with it’s newest release — Wilco Tango Foxtrot.   “A Jobless Recovery Ale, and ode to progress (or lack thereof.) “

Take note of the underlined letters.  Feel that way lately?  Wilco Tango Foxtrot is a brown ale with a strong hop bill. As Lagunitas states – “We’re not quite in the red, or in the black.  Does that mean we’re in the brown?”  Thusly, a brown ale fits.

Tasting notes — Deceptively hoppy at first look.  Lots of fresh hop flavors.  Citrusy, floral hops come through in this brown ale.   WTF has a nice rich malty backbone all the while not being heavy.  The balance is enjoyable, and the taste, fresh.   If you liked, Victory Yakima Twilight, Stone Sublimely, or Terrapin’s newest — Capt’n Krunkles, you might want to get on board with this one.  It’s dark while still being hoppy.

From the bottle ‘”In the funky realm of things that make you go “Hmmm…” 2010 may rank way, way up there. From the curious per curiam decision of531U.S.98 in 2000, to WTC7, to the Superdome, to the Fall of the House of Lehman, to the Nobel President’s Afghan Expedition escalation, to the oxymoronic Jobless Recovery of 2010; we have been confused. So, we done the only thing we could –  we made beer — and lots of it. 6,420M cases of it to be exact. As far as we know, you drank all of it. Thank you for that, because if you had not  we would have been looking for a bailout of our own, and we haven’t heard of any breweries either needing or receiving any of those Yuan-flavored TARP dollars…although we have read that the Las Vegas adult video industry did. Nobody knows why. So, in a world that is once again the proverbial “Ball of Confusion”, craft beer alone seems to carry its own weight. It’s nice to be on the winning team and thank you for your friendship and imbibiliciousness.

Wilco Tango Foxtrot arrives this week in 22oz bomber bottles and draft offerings.  Sightings soon here, and on Twitter@AtlBeerMaster

Brickstore’s 1st IPA Fest – CHEAT SHEET!

No catchy picture for this one. Its a long post.

Brickstore Pub on Saturday October 10th is hosting its first “Hop Harvest” Fest. All 25 taps will be featuring IPAs. Here is a little back-story on the India Pale Ale, in case you never fully knew the style. If you were going to draw up a family tree, the Pale Ale would be the father of the IPA. Pale ales were denoted by the use of pale malt, circa 17th century. The pale ale style has changed over time, and by the mid 18th century coke fire malt was used to produce a beer that was actually paler than its predecessors.

Now, I tell you about pale ales to lead to this. George Hodgson Bow Brewery is attributed to the world’s first IPA. This IPA was a pale ale as described above, that was well hopped, termed October Beer. (See posts about origins of names and style.) This October beer was meant to be cellared for a year or longer. The East India Trading Company (think high school history class,) exported Hodgson’s beer to India — which survived very well on the long trip, thanks to the hoppy nature of the beer acting as a preservative. Ultimately after business deals going bad with Hodgson, other breweries began producing this hoppy style of pale ale, and the demand for an “India Pale Ale” was born.

There’s your history lesson. Knowing the style helps you appreciate your beer. So here is a cheat sheet of the line up of the 25 IPA’s to be featured on Saturday —

Smuttynose “Big A” — Double IPA (DIPA) 9.2% ABV. Part of Smutty’s big beer series. Seasonal release.

Moylan’s “Hopsickle” — DIPA, 9.2% ABV. Tomahawk, Cascade, Centennial hops. VERY hoppy beer, Novato, CA.

Avery “Maharaja” — DIPA, 10.2% ABV. Columbus, Centennial, Crystal, Simcoe hops. Caramel malts. Produced Mar- Sept. Maharaja in Sanskrit means “Great King.” Boulder, CO.

Lagunitas- Undercover Investigation Undercover Shut-down Ale (The story)

Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale

Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale

If you walk into a bar and drink a new beer, and leave with just the knowledge of the taste — I guess that’s acceptable. However if you want my honest opinion — there is a lot that goes into that glass that you may never know about. It has enjoyment to each sip. I don’t want to sound biased, but when you grab a can of a “factory beer” there’s not a whole lot to tell. Its mass produced, sold in bulk, and stays the same. Every time. I’d like to think these few paragraphs help make you a better beer drinker. You will look for something new next time, and know why you want it.

There are a few bars/restaurants in Atlanta that add new selections weekly. For most, it’s another beer. But as I said before, there is a story behind each glass, and it needs to be told. So let this post be the first of a series that gives you the background to new additions to the selection in Atlanta.

Recently, Brickstore Pub and some Taco Mac locations added Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shutdown Ale. Funny name right? Well, it’s not just a witty name to try to get you to buy. A few years ago Lagunitas Brewery used to have party every week featuring their beers, a band or two, and food. From the sounds of it, a quite good party. Well, the state of California brought out the beverage control board to investigate these parties over the course of 8 weeks. Rumor has it the “undercover officers” enjoyed the party as much as the others in attendance.

In the end, the California Alcohol Control Board (ABC) sited Lagunitas Brewery for running a “Disorderly House,” an antiquated post prohibition law to crack down on bars being the front for prostitution /drug rings. I have also found reports that an individual was caught smoking marijuana on the premises. (He brought it from the outside according to reports.) So, on St. Patrick’s Day 2005, ABC came through with its threats. Under California law, the brewery could have been seized but received a 30 day shutdown order (later reduced to 20 days.) Apparently Lagunitas was going to be shutting down temporarily to installing new equipment, so it really didn’t affect operations.

Undercover Shutdown is a strong ale, coming in at 9.0% ABV. It has a taste of a double IPA, but it honestly it doesn’t have the strong taste you expect. It’s a little hoppy, but not to an extreme that an average beer drinker would be turned off from. Shutdown Ale pours light brown/gold, and is slightly bitter at first. It has a mild hop flavor with a hint of grapefruit at the end. I have seen quite a few people try it, and the response has been quite positive.

So here is a little background on Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-down Ale. Sometimes the story gives you a better appreciation for what you’re drinking. And maybe, just maybe — try something new.
