NEW RELEASE: Highland Little Hump Spring

New from Highland Brewing Company (Asheville, NC) is Little Hump Spring Ale.  I hope you aren’t too mature to not giggle at the name.  Little Hump Mountain is a mountain summit in Avery County in  North Carolina.  Little Hump Mountain climbs to 5,207 feet above sea level.  I can only assume Highland named the spring ale after the mountain well – because warm weather – hiking – etc.  This spring ale is here, getting hiking, get drinking.

Commercial Description:
This American Pale Ale is a refreshing session beer meticulously handcrafted with a unique Highland twist. Brewed with grains from America’s heartland, using Simcoe hops for bittering and dry hopped with Amarillo and Cascade for aromatics, this beer finishes crisp and clean. It is a palate pleasing seasonal experience.

Style: American Pale Ale

Taste Expectations: Fresh hops – Lemon & Citrus.  Toasted grain.  Crisp, clean, easy drinking.

Availability: 12oz/6pks.  Draft.  Spring seasonal.

4.5% ABV

New! Highland Brewing’s – Seven Sisters

Highland Brewing’s latest release adds a beer to their seasonal lineup — Seven Sisters Abbey Style Ale.  It follows Black Mountain Bitter, Highland’s Winter Seasonal.

Seven Sisters Abbey Ale is of course an Abbey Ale, with double the normal grain bill, and Belgian dark candi sugar.  (Candi sugar very literally looks like rock candy.  It is implemented in the brewing process to raise the ABV of the brew, without adding to the body of the brew.)  A Belgian Trappist yeast was used in Seven Sisters — giving the beer a dark fruit tone. (And of course the Belgian flavor!)   Hop Bill includes a plethora of noble hops, adding spicy flavors to the brew and not a lot of bitterness.

Ingredients —

Hops — Hallertau Hersbrucker, German Spalt Select

Malts — Pilsen, Pale, Extra Special, & Chocolate Malts

6.5% ABV

20 IBU (Low Bitter)

Availability — 12oz/6pks, and Limited Draft offerings. Seasonal.

CASK ALERT! Highland 15th Anniversary

Highland Brewing out of Asheville, NC just celebrated its 15th Anniversary over the weekend.  In order to celebrate its 15 years of craft brewing, Highland has released 15th Anniversary Auld Ashville Vintage Ale.

15th Auld Asheville Vintage Ale is an Old Ale.  Old Ale is a style that refers to malty, dark beers that originally hail from England.  Old would refer to the ale being held by the brewery for a long period of time.  Typically, the English Old ales were in the 5% ABV neighborhood.  When they exceed 6%, the term “winter warmer” came into play.   American old ales seemingly push 9% ABV or higher.

Highland 15th Anniversary has a strong malt profile from British malts.  Brewed from a traditional British Ale yeast, 15th is bittered by Stryian Bobek hops hailing from Slovenia.  Sterling hops are added for a small spicy kick.

15th Anniversary Auld Asheville Vintage Ale will make its debut in Atlanta this Saturday (1/30/10) on cask at Brickstore Pub.  Tapping time???  TBA.

The ale is 9.5% ABV.
